2 BIRTHDAYS & ANIVERSARIES PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Welcome everyone to a new year. I hope you all had a great Christmas and that fortune smiles upon you in We finished off 2011 with a very enjoyable and memorable Christmas meeting where over 120 toys were donated to the Salvation Army for their toy appeal for the needy in our community. It was great fun once again having Altona Rotary join us for this event, with Altona Rotary donating 32 toys. In addition we had 15 toys provided by Point Cook CFA and 40 toys from the Lifestyle Seasons Retirement Village Social Club (Hoppers Crossing). Excellent entertainment on the night was provided by Emmy Thompson from Melbourne Opera Company and her former student Sarah. Special thanks to Di Coleman from Laverton Community Choir for organising this at short notice. We welcomed our newest club member at that same meeting in Sweeta Goyal and we look forward to her involvement in the club, from someone who is clearly very community minded. With Sweeta s induction, we now have 25 members which is a 32% increase on our membership on the 1 st of July 2011 of 19 members. I am very pleased to announce that we are no longer the smallest club in our cluster group, which is a title we have held for the past 11 years. Plus we are scheduled to induct Ian Boys on the 18 th of January and we have a number of prospective members. For example, I have recently been contacted by two new prospective members who are not in a position to commit to Rotary membership at present but have expressed a desire to become club members in a few months time. They are Steve Morgan from the Rainbow Swim Club of Point Cook (for special needs children) that the club is providing swim vests for and Ajmal Awan who is a former member of Lahore Rotaract (Pakistan). Ajmal works currently for Telstra as a Product Marketing Manager and his wife is a GP in Tarneit. Despite the holiday period the club s activities and ability to make a difference has continued. Thanks to all those that participated in the Boxing Day Bunning s BBQ with over $1600 raised for our charitable fund account. Plus our new International Services Director Craig Dowling has hit the ground running with an initiative to provide a donation of $1000 to support a shipment of emergency goods that Donations in Kind has arranged for the Philippines following recent disastrous storms that resulted in significant loss of life and property. Talking about support for those in need overseas, the Rotary Foundation is Rotary s principal means of directing assistance to those in need in Third World Countries and believe it or not our (formerly small) club on a per member basis made the largest overall contribution to the Rotary Foundation in of any of the 70 clubs in

3 our Rotary District. Outcomes from the recently released District 9800 Foundation report was as follows regarding total club contributions including both normal annual giving and foundation specific project donations: In $US per member: Rotary Club of 1 st Laverton Point Cook $644 2 nd Glen Eira $601 3 rd Toorak $547 District 9800 average $214 I would hazard a guess that this is the first time ever that our club has been the highest contributor on per member basis and was due to our generosity, particularly in relation to earthquake disaster relief in Pakistan and New Zealand, our contribution to the Uganda Water Project and Polio Plus and maintaining our normally strong level of general contributions to the Rotary Foundation. Our next meeting is a social meeting and interclub visit on Wednesday the 11 th of January, where we are joining with Wyndham Rotary to play a social game of lawn bowls (no experience is required). We are meeting at Werribee Lawn Bowls (Chirnside Park off Watton Street Werribee) with a 6.00 for 6.30pm start (note the earlier than normal start). We will have a BBQ dinner between 6.30 and 7.00pm, with lawn bowls to commence from 7.00pm. The cost will be $15 per head for the BBQ and equipment hire. BYO soft drinks/water.
