UE GREEK LIFE is founded on five pillars that shape our community. These pillars help us strive for excellence in our everyday lives as well as gain a well-rounded college experience. We invite you to become part of the tradition and explore your potential as a member of the Greek Life community. Scholarship Greek letter organizations were founded on the principle of successful scholarship. The Greek system at the University of Evansville continues this tradition. Through study tables, tutoring, and other programs established by each chapter, Greeks help their members succeed academically. All sororities and fraternities have specific grade requirements for joining, as well as for remaining in good standing. The all Greek GPA for Fall 2015 was 3.14 and the all student GPA was Leadership Membership in a Greek organization is a great way to discover and refine your leadership potential. Within each chapter there are numerous opportunities to assume a variety of leadership roles. Members share important responsibilities in operating the chapter. However, leadership is not limited to the chapter; there are many Greeks who play an active role in other campus organizations. Sororities and fraternities encourage their members to get involved in other facets of college life that build leadership skills. About 63 percent of Greeks on this campus are active in other campus organizations. Greeks are involved and hold offices in almost every major campus organization, including the Student Government Association, Orientation Leaders, Admission Ambassadors, Student Activities Board, Crescent Magazine, LinC, hall councils, and resident assistants. Philanthropy The University of Evansville Greek community supports a strong tradition of service to our campus and our community. This past year the Greek community raised more than $40,600 in charitable gifts and contributions and reported over 6,000 hours of service to various causes. Each sorority and fraternity focuses on its national philanthropy, but they also donate services to a number of local agencies. Because of the strength in numbers and organizational qualities found in our Greek community, members achieve great success in aiding the community. Lifelong Sisterhood and Brotherhood Sisterhood and brotherhood are terms that mean more than wearing Greek letters, attending meetings, and going to parties. It means that you have found a place you can call your home away from home. Ritual, scholarship, giving yourself to the community, and the feeling of belonging create lifelong bonds of sisterhood or brotherhood. Sisterhood and brotherhood mean joining a group of women or men in love and friendship. Social Interaction The University of Evansville Greek system provides a diverse selection of events to expose members to a wide variety of social programs. Formals, Musical Madness, Greek Week, Homecoming, intramural sports, and mixers all support the goal of bringing together fraternity and sorority members to develop the bonds of friendship. Development of values, traditions, and honor contribute to the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council commitment to social programs that enable personal development. All Greeks maintain a responsible social policy promoting the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council standards for careful planning of safe social activities. The cost for many social events is covered through membership dues. All social events are optional, and the chapters understand that academic commitments come first. 2 3
3 Dana Clayton, EdD Vice of Student Affairs and Dean of Students The University of Evansville Greek system is one of the best in the country. Outstanding scholarship, remarkable service, vitality, and friendship are the foundational pieces that make our program exceptional. The men and women who belong to our fraternities and sororities are some of the highest-profile leaders on campus, both in and out of the classroom. Sisterhood As you go through recruitment, you will notice that no two sororities are alike. Each chapter has its own sense of individuality, and there is a common bond among the members of each chapter that is also unique and private. When you associate yourself with a sorority, you are not just meeting new friends, you are becoming a part of a sisterhood. You will enjoy the benefits of friendships that will last a lifetime. Sisterhood is bonding together while striving for similar goals. Being a part of a sorority is something that cannot be compared to anything else. You are among women who share the same values you have. To know of its existence is one thing, but to experience it is another. Caitlyn East-Hutson Assistant Director for Greek Life Being a member of a fraternity or sorority can be one of the most beneficial and developmental opportunities at UE. Through membership, you can connect with peers whom otherwise you may have never met, give back to your community, tackle campus issues, and have fun. The fraternity and sorority community looks forward to meeting you! Be a part of a great segment of university life be a part of the UE Greek Community! 4 5
4 Recruitment History and Tradition Panhellenic Association Panhellenic in Greek literally means all Greek. The Panhellenic council at University of Evansville serves to represent all four of our National Panhellenic Council (NPC) sororities and our one local sorority, and also acts as their governing body. The National Panhellenic Council serves to provide support and guidance for its sororities and serves as the national voice on contemporary concerns of sorority life. At University of Evansville, our Panhellenic council is made up of a group of five delegates representing each sorority on campus and five executive members. We strive to provide all-greek social, philanthropic, and scholastic programming throughout the campus Greek community. Panhellenic Recruitment Important Dates! 5 ΑΟΠ Being a Greek woman is something I will always cherish. Becoming a member of Alpha Omicron Pi is a commitment that I ve made for a lifetime, not just four years. They have been my biggest support system during my time here at UE. My sisters have been there to push me to do more than I thought I could because they always see the best in me! AOII has helped to transform me into the woman I ve always dreamed of becoming! I can truly say that my sisters have been there through the best and worst times. I can completely be myself and know that they will always accept me. My sisters, as well as the values that tie us together makes me proud to wear the letters AOII! Being a part of this sisterhood is more than I could have ever asked for! I am lucky to be a member of Alpha Omicron Pi as well as the UE Greek community! Alpha Omicron Pi Chapter Name: Chi Lambda Nickname: ΑΟΠ Founded: January 2, 1897; Locally founded June 10, 1951 Fall 2016 GPA: 3.34 Spring 2017: 3.41 Philanthropy: Ark Crisis Center and Holly s House Symbol: Rose Colors: Cardinal Kindrea Wilson Being Greek is so much more than what it looks like. Sure each chapter has an awesome philanthropy, rockin GPA s, and killer school spirit. But again, it s so much more than that. I went Greek because of the amazing girls that have changed my life here in AOII. These girls are there to pick me up when I m down, push me when I need it most, love me through my worst, and help me celebrate my best. I am forever grateful for the amazing leadership opportunities AOII has given me. If I could use one quote to explain exactly what AOII and Greek life has meant to me, it would be this one from Sarah Dessen s book What Happened to Goodbye: Home wasn t a set house, or a single town on a map, It was wherever the people who loved you were together. Not a place, but a moment, and then another, building on each other like bricks to create a solid shelter that you take with you for your entire life, wherever you may go. I am happy to say that the friendships and memories that I have made these four years will stay with me for the rest of my life. At an individual level, Greek Life refines men and women into the best versions of themselves through its values-based culture and the friendship it fosters. The sources of encouragement and motivation present in the UE Greek community provide the fuel that keeps its members pursuing excellence. At a campus level, the environment that Greek Life promotes is inspirational, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a college student; at UE, members of Greek organizations excel academically, embrace leadership opportunities and serve the Evansville community through an array of philanthropies. Ultimately, Greek Life is a cycle of empowerment; we are able to strengthen our campus and community because of the Greek organizations that have invested so much in our personal development. Symbol: Owl Colors: Cardinal and Straw Through Greek Life I have gained incredible leadership experience, philanthropic opportunity, and the confidence to tackle the challenges along the way. Through Chi Omega I have found a place to call my home away from home. I have a sisterhood full of passionate women who push one another to be the best they can be. But most of all, I have gained friendships that will last a lifetime. 7 ΦΜ Phi Mu Never could I have anticipated how UE Greek Life would provide me with lifelong friendships that I wouldn t have made otherwise, within my own sorority and within other Greek organizations. Greek Life has a unique way of bringing diverse people together, and although the different organizations celebrate distinct values and support individual philanthropies, at UE we respect each other and the organizations that we have found homes in. I wasn t sure I wanted to go Greek when I first signed up for recruitment, but I had this feeling that the Greek community at UE was special. I was thrilled to get a bid from Phi Mu. Through my sorority, I have met women who will be my lifelong friends. I have gotten the chance to be a leader and make a difference in my chapter. I have met sisters from around the country who have the same values as I do _ love, honor, and truth. Going Greek has made me a better person. I truly believe I have found my home on our campus. As I went through recruitment, I knew I was looking for a support system and sisters that I could call friends for life. In addition to those things, I have found more than I could possibly put into words. Within Zeta Tau Alpha, I have found a strong sisterhood, leadership opportunities, a diverse friend group, and a self-confidence that I did not know I was capable of. Through Zeta Tau Alpha and Greek Life, I have been encouraged to seek opportunities that have led me to grow as an individual. The Greek Life community is one that desires to make an impact on UE s campus and in the surrounding Evansville communities. One of my favorite things is watching the Greek Life community show up in big ways at philanthropy events to support each other and to truly make a difference. By joining Greek Life, I have met friends I never would have met. In Zeta Tau Alpha, I have found my home. When I first came to UE I wasn t sure about a lot of things, but joining a sorority was one aspect I knew for sure I was not interested in. At least that was the case until the school year progressed and I was able to meet some of the most amazing people. I saw all the hard work each chapter put in to their individual philanthropies, how the community was so close as a whole, and most importantly how the Greek Life on this campus was nothing like the movies or stories I heard about before starting college. Since I ve joined Zeta Tau Alpha, I ve become a leader, a philanthropist, a genuine friend, and so much more. It has helped me become the best version of myself. Zeta has also given me a wonderful support system, loving sisters, and a home away from home. Being in Greek Life is absolutely a privilege and an incredible choice, and becoming a member of Zeta was the best decision I ve made in college. 9 History and Tradition Interfraternity Council The Interfraternity Council is the governing body of fraternities. It consists of two members from each fraternity and each fraternity president. The executive board is made of five elected members from the fraternities. The IFC maintains self-governance over the fraternities, and plans and supports recruitment, Greek Week, publicity, and interfraternal programming. The purpose of the Interfraternity Council is to create positive interaction among member fraternities, the campus, and the community, and to regulate standards as defined by the University of Evansville and the national and international fraternity members. Brotherhood Brotherhood is the bonding of men of various backgrounds, beliefs, places, and eras around a singular set of life-directing commitments. There are oaths, obligations, and peer accountability. For those with whom we ve forged a connection that s deeper than just beers on Saturday nights, or Spring Break trips together. A connection born on the day we spoke the oaths that made us fraternity men together. Recruitment Important Dates! Here at UE, being Greek is something special, and rushing Lambda Chi Alpha showed me what it means to belong to something bigger than myself. At Lambda Chi Alpha, we are a laid-back yet tight-knit group of guys who genuinely care for each other, and encourage each and every brother to succeed by following our teachings, principles, and ideals. We strongly focus on volunteering in the community and hosting philanthropic events for deserving causes, because we believe that it s part of our duty to give back where we can. Joining Lambda Chi Alpha has provided me with brotherhood, personal growth, memories, and friendships that will last a lifetime, and it is one of the best decisions I ve ever made. I am who I am today, because of Lambda Chi Alpha, and I hope that we will be able to offer that opportunity for you as well. Joining Lambda Chi was the best decision I ve made since coming to UE. Our brotherhood really sets us apart and I know the friends I ve made here, as well as the values I ve learned, will stick for life. 11 FIJI Phi Gamma Delta Chapter Name: Epsilon Iota Nickname: FIJI Founded: May 1, 1848; Locally founded April 15, 2000 Fall 2016 GPA: 3.29 Spring 2017 GPA: 3.32 Philanthropy: Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center Symbol: Black Diamond with a White Star in the middle Colors: Royal Purple Conner Sheets When I think of what being Greek at UE means, I think of all the friendships I have developed. These aren t only with FIJI but rather with all Greek affiliations because it truly is one close community. Being Greek has also provided me with many opportunities that I would not have had before. These include leadership positions, academic help from brothers, and a common connection with brothers around the country that could help with future job searches. Greek Life is not just a group of friends to live with or spend all your time in college with. It is a door to many opportunities to help you during college and after graduation. Not everyone chooses to open that door, but I will always argue that it was the smartest choice I ever made. If I were to give one piece of advice to any UE student, I would say to go through rush. You ll get a ton of great food, you can meet some really great people, and you might find a place to call home for the rest of your life. When first arriving to college I was excited to branch out and join groups that truly defined who I am. However, I did not want to lose sight of why I was at college, which was to excel academically. Phi Gamma Delta not only allowed me to take full advantage of the social and philanthropic perks of college, but the brothers I have gained have also pushed me to succeed in my classes. Who knows how I would have adjusted without the support of the Greek community. Isaac Martin Dues and Fees* Housing: $2,450 Dues: $600 Parlor fee: $150 *Fees are listed by semester cost
12 FKT At Phi Kappa Tau everyone gets the chance to be more than just another person in the brotherhood and show their own individuality. From day one, a new member s voice is heard and given the same weight as any other brother on most decisions the chapter faces. On a day-to-day basis, when I joined I felt included very quickly like I was already an integral part of the family. I could not have possibly chosen a better group of brothers. Phi Kappa Tau Chapter Name: Delta Beta Nickname: Phi Tau Founded: March 17, 1906; Locally founded May 26, 1968 Fall 2016 GPA: 3.02 Spring 2017 GPA: 3.18 Philanthropy: Serious Fun Network Symbol: Non Ryan Armstrong Colors: Harvard Red and Old Gold The day I became a Phi Tau is one I ll never forget. It was at a point in my freshman year where I was enjoying college and its newfound sense of freedom, but was simultaneously drifting along my independent adult life without a sense of guidance. I was going to classes, eating all my meals, getting plenty of sleep, and even had a great group of friends, but regardless of all of this, I could not find myself feeling at ease. What I was missing was the tight-knit sense of brotherhood, acceptance, and reliability that I experience every day in the house of PKT. I was looking for an open and honest backbone of support, but for me this group of guys ended up going way beyond just these characteristics. On this campus, I m proud to carry the mark of distinction that is Phi Tau. Justin Morrison Dues and Fees* Housing: $3,080 Dues: $450 Parlor fee: $150 *Fees are listed by semester cost
13 SAE Going Greek was one of the best decisions of my life. I was able to find a group of brothers and create friendships, as well as obtain a support system that will last a lifetime. Through UE s Greek Life and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, I have grown as a person and student more than I could have ever imagined. At SAE we strive to live by our creed, The True Gentleman. By doing this each member will grow personally, professionally, and scholastically. If you have any questions please speak to any brother and they will be happy to answer them. Sigma Alpha Epsilon Chapter Name: Indiana Epsilon Nickname: SAE Founded: March 9, 1856; Locally founded December 14, 1957 Fall 2016 GPA: 3.01 Spring 2017 GPA: 3.26 Philanthropy: Children s Miracle Network Symbol: Lion Torrin Madden Colors: Royal Purple and Old Gold Joining Sigma Alpha Epsilon was one of the best decisions I have ever made. At first, I had no plans on rushing, but ended up signing up because you got free food. After that, I can say that this place has given me more opportunities and friendships than I could ask for. We stand by our creed, The True Gentleman, because those are the types of men we hope to be and the types of men we hope to recruit. That is something that you cannot find anywhere else on campus, and that is what separates us from everyone else. 14 SFE As men of Sigma Phi Epsilon, we strive to hold true to our cardinal principles of virtue, diligence, and brotherly love. We do this through continuous academic development, community service, and participation in campus events. Our chapter consists of a very diverse group of brothers who are all striving toward a common goal of being the best Greek organization on campus. Sigma Phi Epsilon Chapter Name: Indiana Epsilon Nickname: SigEp Founded: November 1, 1901 Locally founded March 12, 1955 Fall 2016 GPA: 3.00 Spring 2017 GPA: 3.25 Philanthropy: Big Brothers Big Sisters Symbol: Purple and Red Crest with Sword, Star, and Cross Cameron Robinson Colors: Purple and Red Going Greek and joining Sigma Phi Epsilon at UE was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. We focus on our bond as brothers to create a tight-knit and close community in order to grow as men and to better the world around us. Joining TKE has been the best decision I have made since coming to UE and has given me opportunities that I would have not normally had. With TKE s 60th upon us, we are looking to what is sure to be a bright future. Jonathan Engle TKE is more than a place. The guys in this chapter have compassion and support each other. We work together to achieve good grades and have fun. The late night IHOP and Taco Bell runs help us unwind and have fun at college, and that is a big part of the college experience. We raise money for St. Jude s Children s Hospital through various fundraisers on campus and in the community. At the end of the day, TKE is about the men. We support and push each other to be the best we can be. Matthew Horton Dues and Fees* Housing: $3,595 First semester: $300 Subsequent semesters: $400 *Fees are listed by semester cost. 16 Frequently Asked Questions Am I obligated to join after I go through formal recruitment? No, this is a time for you to decide if you would like to join a sorority or fraternity. Many women and men choose to go through formal recruitment to meet people and make new friends. This is an opportunity for you to visit the sororities or fraternities, get a glimpse of Greek Life, and decide whether the UE Greek community is right for you. How do I decide which group I prefer? Your experiences at each recruitment event, your personal interests, and your goals should guide you to the group that is right for you. What if I choose not to go through recruitment as a freshman? It s never too late to give Greek Life a try. All fraternities have open recruitment following Bid Night and Fraternity Passover, and a few sororities also offer recruitment at another point during the year.
