2 Domestic Abuse Domestic Abuse is a serious social and criminal issue. The violence can take many forms and can last for many years. It includes physical assault, sexual abuse, psychological abuse and financial exploitation. Anyone in society can suffer from this type of abuse, regardless of your age, gender, sexual orientation, financial position, culture or beliefs. The violence may be from someone you are currently in a relationship with or have previously had a relationship with. This includes abuse from relatives, as well as opposite or same sex partners. There are laws to protect you and any children you have living with you. Local specialist services are available in Trafford to provide you with free, confidential advice and explain your options. Action on Elder Abuse Confidential freephone helpline Website This helpline is for anyone concerned in any way about the abuse of older people, including older people themselves, their friends and relatives. The Line is dedicated exclusively to this issue and is staffed by paid workers and volunteers who are trained and experienced in providing advice on abuse. Adult Abuse Line Telephone: Monday to Friday office hours iat@trafford.gov.uk Textphone If you think that a vulnerable adult has been abused or is at risk of abuse contact the Adult Abuse Line above, but if the person is in immediate danger, call the Police and/or Ambulance on 999. Reports to the Adult Abuse Line will action a Social Worker to visit and talk to you about your concerns. We will also take account of the wishes of the vulnerable person and will aim to provide services to stop or reduce further abuse. Telephone the helpline for details. Appointments with specialist advisers in Welfare Benefits and Debt are available to clients with complex benefits and debt enquiries. Access to these advisers depends on the particular circumstances of each client. Visit your local CAB and talk to a generalist adviser, who will assess your case and may then be able to make an appointment for you to see one of our specialists. All volunteers are trained listeners, with the counsellors being either qualified or in the final stages of training. They work with people on almost any issue, and can also help to find local resources for other forms of support. Manchester s Women s Domestic Violence Helpline Helpline telephone: Website: The Helpline is confidential and women do not have to give their name. We can act as a referral point for refuges, safe houses and other agencies that assist women who are experiencing or who have experienced domestic abuse. The Helpline can access refuge provision for women across the UK through the Women s Aid network of refuges. We can signpost women to relevant local agencies such as solicitors and outreach workers and support groups. Monday to Friday 10.00am to 4.00pm excluding bank holidays.
