2 P A G E 2 Operation Ritter Domestic Abuse Initiative In the run up to Christmas there is a dramatic increase in the number of Domestic related incidents across the area of Trafford. These incidents not only affect the victims of abuse, but also their children, family members, neighbours and the community as a whole. Operation Ritter is a Trafford Police Initiative. The Public Protection Investigation Unit (PPIU) will provide extra officers over a 3 week period in an effort to highlight and provide a premium service to our customers when dealing with domestic related incidents in the run up to Christmas. The initiative will commence on Friday 9th December 2011 and concluded on Friday 20th December The PPIU This is to ensure the victims of abuse receive a high level of service and they are provided with the additional support, advice and help they need in the run up to Christmas. The PPIU officers will also advise and direct investigations carried out by uniformed staff, ensuring all statements, photographs, evidence gathering and forensic opportunities are secured to aid in any subsequent criminal investigation. The message from Police Sergeant Steven Gardner from Trafford Domestic is You do not have to suffer in silence this Christmas. There are specialist trained officers available for you to speak to you and your situation will be taken seriously. There are agencies in Trafford that are there to help you and assist you. Greater Manchester Police takes a zero tolerance approach when dealing with incidents of Domestic Abuse and will take positive action in all instances. Also known as Operation Mistletoe Get help to stop your abusive behaviour... phone RESPECT Trafford s Public Protection Investigation Unit (PPIU) will be providing specialist trained officers to work alongside the uniformed patrols who respond to on going domestic incidents. They will work on the Domestic Abuse Enforcement Car between on weekdays. There is an increase of incidents on a Friday and Saturday night when alcohol also becomes a contributory factor, therefore, officers will be working between Trafford s Domestic Abuse Unit adopts a multi agency approach to tackling domestic abuse. This is to ensure any potential risk is posed to the victim s and children suffering from abuse is identified and dealt with robustly. We will share information with our partner agencies so a support network and safety plan can be put in place.

Trafford Independent Domestic Violence Advice IDVA Increased in IDVAs, Ministry of Justice and Council have funded two more plus Half a Post in Alcohol Time: pm Place: 33 Cross Street, Sale, Trafford (opposite Sainsbury s) A space for women (this is for women and children only) to chat and enjoy time together. Historically women have always gathered together to talk about their lives, share ways of coping with their lives and be creative. All women are welcome to have a go at being Artistic with our visiting artist Barbara Jepson, (from Ten Plus Textiles) along with a light lunch. It does not matter if you have never worked with arts before, or feel shy and unconfident just come along to this safe, supportive, friendly space. Friday 2nd, 9th or 16th December 2011 Candlelit Vigil For those of you who are not aware, Manchester hold a now annual Candlelit Vigil in the city to remember those victims of domestic abuse / violence who have been murdered by their partners or ex partners in the past 12 months; on average 110 women every year are murdered, nationally, by their partner or ex partner. The event will, this year, be held at 5pm on Friday 25th November outside the Bridgewater Hall on Lower Mosley Street (by the 'pebble' near the steps). The 25th November marks the first day of the international United Nations' 16-day campaign to eliminate violence against women. Cllr. Suzanne Richards, Lead Member for Women's Issues, has once again kindly agreed to commence the vigil. Colleagues from across Greater Manchester, from both the statutory and voluntary sectors annually attend, and we are also looking forward to welcoming a group of young people from the Young People's Support Foundation (YPSF) in the city again this year who will be joining us at the vigil. It would be great to see as many people there as possible and you would all be most welcome. The vigil is a very short event (with a two-minute's silence) but has become an important annual focal point for those who work in the field of domestic abuse, or who are affected by it. 4 P A G E 4 Friday Drop In Sessions WomenMATTA is a women s community project based at the Pankhurst Centre that offers a holistic rehabilitative service to women offenders and those at risk of offending. WomenMATTA offer a free therapeutic drop in session every Friday from 1pm until 4pm at the Pankhurst Centre. These sessions are run by staff and volunteers and offer a free hot lunch, access to a clothing bank and a range of workshops ranging from relaxation and pampering to IT skills. There are also staff and volunteers on hand to offer advice, signposting and take referrals to the service if applicable. The WomenMATTA drop in sessions are very popular and are regularly playing host to over 25 women per session. This offers the women an ideal opportunity to not only learn new skills and access support but make friends, socialise and support each other. Over 24,000 girls are estimated to be at risk of FGM in England and Wales. FGM is illegal in the UK. It is also illegal to take girls abroad from the UK for FGM. FGM results in severe, physical, psychological and sexual complications and affected women and girls require highly specialist care. 7 RAISING AWARENESS OF SEXUAL EXPLOITATION WITH YOUNG PEOPLE - TRAINING DATES In response to demand, we are pleased to announce eight new dates for our "Train the trainer" one-day course for professionals working directly with children and young people. The course is targeted at PSHE teachers, Youth Workers, YOT's, Sexual Health Teams, School Nurses and CSE Project Workers with a direct role in helping young people to develop an awareness of safe and healthy sexual relationships. The new dates are: Derby/Nottingham 10th January Walsall 24th January Bradford 31st January Swindon 8th February Liverpool 21st February Manchester 28th February London 6th March Newcastle 13th March The aims of the course are to: Explore the issue of child sexual exploitation (CSE) Introduce a framework for raising young people's awareness of CSE Become familiar with relevant resources and how to use them in group work with young people Identify good practice on how to respond to concerns The course uses the UKHTC's excellent DVD and resource pack "My Dangerous Loverboy" together with other complementary resources developed from the work of Safe and Sound in Derby and other similar projects around the UK. Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. This includes issues of concern to black and minority ethnic (BME) communities such as so called 'honour based violence', female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage. An adult is defined as any person aged 18 years or over. Family members are defined as mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister, and grandparents; whether directly related, in-laws or stepfamily.
