2 30 th Annual MHBFSA Conference Keynotes Joseph R. Sanok, MA, LLP, LPC, NCC Joe has over 15 years of experience running experiential approaches to therapy. Through high ropes and low ropes course, individual and family therapy, and presentations, Joe has utilized experiential approaches to therapy. As the clinical founder of the SAIL Champion program, he implemented evidence based therapy on a sailboat. Joe's program saw an 80% drop in the intensity and frequency of symptoms in a one-week intervention. Joe's training for therapists have been implemented by thousands of therapists through his website, PracticeofthePractice.com. He has been featured in Forbes, Reader's Digest, Yahoo Health News, GOOD Magazine, and The Gottman Institute. Huffington Post recently named his podcast one of the top 100 to follow. Karen Vadino, MSW Karen is a motivational speaker, humorist, trainer and consultant. She is nationally recognized speaker known for her unique and humorous approach to life. All of Karen s presentations are humorous in nature, reflecting her own approach to dealing with the stress of everyday life. She has worked for two different Children Services Boards, in a children s psychiatric hospital and several chemical dependency agencies. These have included both clinical and educational departments..

In addition, Joe will demonstrate and discuss five experiential activities: consensus, the train, seek and find, life map, and debrief and engage with the audience by way of application examples and table top discussions. Workshops A. Ethics Part I Participants will learn risk management; best practices; gain a greater understanding of the legal system; discuss HIPPA and learn how technology can best be managed. Experiential Activities for Therapy with Children & Families, Part I Participants will: articulate an understanding of three considerations before engaging in experiential approaches to therapy; actively engage in and learn five experiential activities to use in a clinical setting for client engagement; witness a demonstration of three appropriate ways to de-brief experiential sessions. Recognizing and Treating Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders with Children & Families Participants will learn the symptoms, and latest diagnosis assessment and treatment modalities that will benefit children and families struggling with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. PMTO: Engagement This workshop will provide a short overview of PMTO; discuss the six key dimensions of writing a goal statement; supply a tracking strengths sheet for parent use; and discuss resistance and key things to do to address such. Ethics Part II Participants will discuss confidentiality in the home-based environment; learn more about the importance and use of informed consent integrated with realistic challenges related to home based work. This workshop will help fulfill Michigan s continuing education requirements related to ethics. Experiential Activities for Therapy with Children & Families, Part II Through stories and case examples, the concepts of anchoring and collective history will inform participants how to use experiential approaches as an ongoing informative tool in therapy. Demonstrate, observe, and discuss three experiential activities: The Life Map de-brief, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization. Ethics Part III Mandated reporting and professional identity (i.e. SW, LPC) in home-based service provision; reviews of ethical expectations will be discussed and how supervision can be used to decrease clinical risk. Kara Reed, B.A. B. The Impact of Substance Use on Family Systems This training will assist participants in understanding Family Systems Theory and Attachment Theory as it relates to family systems. It will assist the treatment provider in identifying how parental substance use may impact children emotionally, behaviorally, and socially. Participants will learn about risk factors that impact family functioning; and, gain an understanding of prevention, engagement, and best treatment practices. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in activities and discussion designed to enhance their learning regarding engagement and treatment techniques. Parents: MORE than an Ounce of Prevention Participants will increase knowledge of current and emerging drug trends in Michigan; gain a better understanding of parents role in prevention; and, increase their knowledge of prevention resources and applications, as well as treatment referrals. Spirituality in the Counseling Process with Children & Families Participants will learn the similarities and differences between spirituality and religion ; become familiar with some assessment tools specific to spirituality; Increase awareness of their attitudes toward those with a different worldview; Understand the importance of integrating spirituality into the counseling process and learn how this and their own spiritual journey may affect the counseling process. Exit I-75 at Frankenmuth/Bridgeport Exit #144. Turn left onto the Dixie Highway and follow it for two (2) miles. Turn left at the blinking light onto Junction Road (Junction Road will be called Genesee Street in Frankenmuth). Follow this highway for 5.2 miles until you reach the traffic light at the intersection of Genesee and Main. Turn right and follow Main Street to the third traffic light (just beyond the two (2) large restaurants) and turn left to cross the Wooden Covered Bridge. The Bavarian Inn Lodge will be on your left. Traveling from the South: Take I-75 North through Flint. Exit I-75 at the Frankenmuth/Birch Run Exit #136. Turn right on Birch Run Road and follow it for 1.9 miles to a 4-way stop at the intersection at M-83 (Gera Road) and Birch Run Road. Turn left on M-83 and follow this highway approximately 4.2 miles to Weiss Street where you will turn right. You will see the Oval Chapel on your left. Follow Weiss Street approximately 1 mile to a 4-way stop. Continue on Weiss for another quarter mile. The Bavarian Inn Lodge is on the left with easy access to parking.
