1 Transdiagnostic Mechanisms: Mapping the Way to Case Formulation and Treatment Planning A Workshop with Drs. Shelly Frank and Joan Davidson Saturday, September 27, 2014, 10:00 am 4:00 pm (5 CE Credits) (Includes Lunch) Immediately Followed by an NCCBT Social Event Workshop Description Current trends within the scientific community are shifting toward a transdiagnostic perspective that focuses on the common psychological processes (mechanisms) underlying different disorders. However, the growing number of treatment options and the voluminous literature on psychological mechanisms often leave therapists feeling confused and overwhelmed when trying to effectively target patient problems. Largely based on the presenters recently released book, The transdiagnostic road map to case formulation and treatment planning: Practical guidance for clinical decision making, this workshop offers a clear, flexible, and practical resource for therapists striving to make sound clinical decisions for their patients in real time across a diverse range of psychological problems. The workshop will (a) identify the most recent transdiagnostic mechanisms (TDMs) derived from the empirical literature, illustrating their role as underlying vulnerabilities and patterns of responses that are hypothesized to trigger and maintain symptoms and functional impairments across diagnostic categories; (b) present a method for linking TDMs with patients problems; (c) present an innovative categorization of interventions to consider based on the functions they serve in addressing TDMs; and (d) illustrate a step by step process to guide clinicians through the treatment process from intake to termination. Experiential exercises, role plays, and clinical vignettes will be included to teach participants how to assess presenting problems for relevant TDMs, develop TDM driven case formulations, determine mechanism change goals to meet treatment objectives, and utilize a functionally based categorization system of clinical options to target TDMs with individualized treatment plans incorporating second and third wave cognitive behavioral interventions. Workshop Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the role of transdiagnostic mechanisms (TDMs) in the development and maintenance of psychological problems. 2. Implement a functionally based method of assessing presenting problems to identify specific TDMs for their patients. 3. Design individualized treatment plans that incorporate second and third wave cognitivebehavioral interventions to target TDMs across multiple problems. Key References Frank, R. I., & Davidson, J.
