1 Community Fundraiser Recruitment Pack Job title Salary Annual leave entitlement Working hours Location Disclosure check Job reference Every one of us in the UK will be affected at some point by a terminal illness. When that time comes, don t we all want to be confident the right care will be there for us? We need your help now to keep us in people s homes and in communities around the UK. To provide the care everyone deserves at the end of their life. To bring light in the darkest hours. What I enjoy most about the Community Fundraiser role is the variety of the work. From working with volunteers to managing campaigns to local PR work, I feel supported by management and the training provided to support fundraising in my area, but also to push myself to try new ideas. Sophie, Community Fundraiser, East Midlands Team Thank you to everyone who supports us and makes our work possible. To find out how we can help or to make a donation, visit mariecurie.org.uk

2 Welcome from Mark Thank you for your interest in joining Marie Curie s Community Fundraising team. As the Head of Department, I would like to tell you a bit about the important role our team plays at Marie Curie. The fundraising work we do in UK communities mirrors the way Marie Curie provides local services. So, we are an important link between those services and the public, enabling people to support our work with families living with a terminal illness right across the UK. The Community Fundraising team s mission is to build long-term relationships with individuals and groups, inspiring them to fundraise and helping supporters undertake their fundraising successfully. Approximately a quarter of all Marie Curie s voluntary income comes from Community Fundraising - one of the largest in the voluntary sector. With a network of over 520 Fundraising Groups and 5,400 volunteers, we raise around 23 million every year through a mixture of supporter-led activity and well-established campaigns like our annual Great Daffodil Appeal. We also provide a unique resource to support other areas of Marie Curie s work, such as corporate partnerships, legacy promotion, retail stock generation and campaigning. By focusing on our core strength of combining local knowledge with relationship-building skills, we are able to serve the whole organisation as well as grow Community Fundraising income. As a Marie Curie Community Fundraising team member, you ll need to be positive, optimistic, open-minded and approachable. You ll be a people person, and enjoy building rapport with both individuals and groups in all parts of your community patch. You ll provide the motivation, inspiration, encouragement and support that our volunteers and supporters need to enjoy their fundraising and raise as much as possible. You ll be well-organised, hardworking, resilient and committed to giving our wonderful supporters the great stewardship they deserve. When you join us we ll provide you with a thorough induction to get you off to a flying start. We'll then support your career development with the Community Fundraising Training pathway. This is a modular programme of learning, covering topics like planning, developing a case for support, spotting supporter potential, building media relationships, managing volunteer and Fundraising Groups and making effective fundraising approaches. Good luck with your application! Mark Winton Head of Community Fundraising UK I love working at Marie Curie because I work with such amazing colleagues. Everyone at Marie Curie is so supportive and approachable and you are made to feel so welcome from your very first day. The induction programme is also excellent so you are able to get stuck into the role from day one and there is an excellent package of additional learning to support your personal development. Julie, Community Fundraiser, South West Team 2

3 Why your role is so important Every day of your life matters, whether it s the first or the last. Rosie s story Every one of us in the UK will be affected at some point by a terminal illness. When that time comes, don t we all want to be confident the right care will be there for us? But one in four people don t get the care and support they need at the end of their lives. When they re scared. When they re not sure where to turn to. When they know they re dying. That could be you or someone close to you. We can t let that happen. The things people need aren t too much to ask. High quality care in the place they want to be, usually their home. Control of symptoms like pain. And clear information from the start. So that, even at such a difficult, emotional time, people can feel in control. Comfortable. Cared for. And still like people not patients. That s what Marie Curie s been giving people across the UK for 70 years, through our nurses, hospices and other services. We know our approach works. But we re facing significant challenges, as our population ages and NHS resources are stretched to breaking point. We need you now to keep us in people s homes and in communities around the UK. To provide the care everyone deserves at the end of their life. To bring light in the darkest hours. My dad, Chris, had been slowing down for a couple of years when he was diagnosed with liver cancer. He went downhill rapidly and died within two months. The plan was for him to see an oncologist but a few days later, he collapsed and was rushed to hospital. He had collapsed but was still conscious my mum said she was going to call an ambulance but he didn t want to cause a fuss. He was put in a private room and we put a mattress on the floor and one of us always slept on the floor with him. The nurses were great but they can t be with a patient all of the time. We had three options; Dad could stay in hospital, go to a hospice or come home. We wanted to bring him home but didn t really know if it would be possible. The nurses kept mentioning to us about getting help from Marie Curie carers overnight. The three of us felt that we could manage and wouldn t need this help. Eventually sleep deprivation took its toll and we agreed we needed help overnight. It was a relief being able to say that we needed help. It was undoubtedly priceless and hugely valued. Dad would be thankful knowing that she was there to help us and thankful for hers and others support throughout his time at home. 3

4 Our vision, mission and values Our vision A better life for people and their families living with a terminal illness. 7 A day in the life of a Community Fundraiser at Marie Curie Every day is different at Marie Curie and you ll have the opportunity to shape your diary around building strong community relationships and growing income from your patch with a mixture of community-based and office-based appointments. Here's what a typical day at Marie Curie may look like in the words of the fundraisers themselves. I m just saying hello to our office volunteers and setting them up with their tasks for today. I m writing a press release to the local paper to thank the rotary for their recent collection. They like PR and I took a great picture when I went and said hello on the day. I ve been on the phone to a lady who had an event this weekend to thank her and find out how it went great news, it was a success! Hopefully she ll hold another event for us next year. I m phoning supporters who have signed up to hold their own event to ensure they have received their resources, thank them for their support and help them to maximise their fundraising. I m about to phone the chair of one of my Fundraising Groups who are meeting tonight to double check she has all the information she needs and that she has remembered the items I asked to be on the agenda. I m heading off to the launch of my Fundraising Group meeting! I hope everyone turns up! 7
