2 NASCOLA Business Meeting Agenda (7:30 PM-8:00 PM) 1. Call to order 2. Minutes of the NASCOLA Annual Membership Meeting 12/10/06 (posted on website) were approved. 3. Executive Secretary (Ms. Elizabeth Plumhoff) Act as Executive Committee resource primary contact for NASCOLA membership Prepare and distribute NASCOLA Newsletter (July 2007) with input from Committee chairs and Executive Officers Participate in Subcommittee activities and conference calls as directed by Executive Committee Collaborate with Dr. Cathy Hayward and Dave Hayward on Website design and processes Maintain accurate membership list and communicate Proficiency Testing program participants to ECAT 4. Treasurer Report (Dr. James Zehnder) Item Amount Beginning Balance January 1, 2007 $36,101 NASCOLA Dues & PT/EQA Program Institution Member Category 2007 NASCOLA Dues &/or PT/EQA Program Associate Member Category 2007 NASCOLA Dues Individual Member Category 2007 $84,806 $14,000 $ Payment to ECAT for 2007 PT/EQA Program ($65,123) Other expenses ($26,934) Balance (December 31, 2007) [ESTIMATED] $43,000 Dr. Zehnder reported that the vast majority of NASCOLA expenses are for the proficiency testing program from ECAT and reported on the significant impact of payment in Euros on NASCOLA expenses. Although ECAT fees remained unchanged for 2008, the real impact of this cost on NASCOLA expenses will depend on the dollar value in Dr. Hayward invited the Chairs of the Different Committees to present reports on the major activities of their groups in NASCOLA Committee reports and updates (agendas & minutes on website) a. Proficiency Testing committee (Dr. Ellinor Peerschke, chair) Goals for 2008 include providing added benefits to PT EQA program subscribers by: Develop guidelines for FVIII inhibitor testing (Ellinor Peerschke) Develop questionnaire to better understand interpretation and reporting of VWF test results (Wayne Chandler) in North America Evaluate functional APCR testing by NASCOLA laboratories (Betsy VanCott) The efforts of the individuals involved in the committee were gratefully acknowledged: Factor Assays subcommittee: Dr George Rodgers Chair, Mr David Chance; Lupus Anticoagulant subcommittee: Chuck Eby, M.D., Chair, Drs Agnes Aysola, Larry Brace, Joan Mattson, Kandice Kottke-Marchant; Thrombophilia subcommittee: Dr Elizabeth Van Cott Chair, Mr Steve Johnson, Drs Rita Selby, John Heit), Von Willebrand Factor subcommittee: Dr. Wayne Chandler Chair, Ms. Donna Castellone, Drs Kenneth Friedman, Ellinor Peerschke. Also acknowledged in a newly established role: Ms. Marlies Ledford-Kraemer, Proficiency Testing Liaison

3 PT/EQA Completed Projects Include: i. Thrombophilia Testing Report on ATIII testing presented at Mayo-NASCOLA meeting: Rita Selby ii. VWF Report on Multimer Analysis presented at Mayo-NASCOLA meeting: Wayne Chandler iii. Lupus Anticoagulant Dr. Peerschke reported that Dr. Chuck Eby is the new chair of the Lupus Anticoagulant iv. Committee. Factor Assays An overview of Factor VIII Inhibitor Survey Results will be presented at this meeting by Ellinor Peerschke (Donna Castellone and Marlies Ledford-Kraemer) b. Education committee (Dr. James Zehnder, chair) NASCOLA HIT Questionnaire Study is currently in press, in the journal Thrombosis and Haemostasis ECAT Survey Proficiency testing The Education Group will be working with Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research (HTRS) on a joint conference in April 2008 and with Mayo Clinic for a joint conference in August The Education Pediatric Subcommittee is chaired by Anthony Chan c. Website committee (Dr. Cathy Hayward, chair) Dr. Hayward reported on the improvements and enhancements to the new website ( The enhancements include a job posting page, enhanced security for members, on line renewals and several additional behind the scenes improvements. She thanked Dave Hayward (Webmaster) for his contributions. d. Membership committee (Ms. Donna Castellone on behalf of Dr. Elizabeth VanCott, Chair) The membership committee was re-established in December of 2006 and has been very busy since then. Ms. Castellone thanked the committee members: Lesley Black Donna Castellone Associate Member Liaison Cathy Hayward William Nichols Ellinor Peerschke Beth Plumhoff Alvin Schmaier Barbara Young James Zehnder Membership status now includes 60 paid members (61 Institutions, 14 Associate and 5 Individuals) In addition, we have 4 Honorary members and 5 Members in training (a new category introduced in 2007). Donna announced and welcomed the new 2007 members and thanked other members who have provided their ongoing support to NASCOLA. Membership Committee 2007 Activities and Goals for 2008: Recruitment of new associate members and institutional members Invitation letters written by committee Special thank you to Cathy Hayward, Lesley Black, Barbara Young and Betsy Van Cott for contracting potential institutional members in 2007 Special thank you to Donna Castellone for her role as Associate Member Liaison Top Reasons to Join NASCOLA were assembled: quotes from current members are now posted on the home page of the NASCOLA website Assist Executive Committee with databases and financial analysis/decisions about membership fees Communication to NASCOLA membership Newsletter to membership sent summer 2007 (compiled by Beth Plumhoff)

4 Information sent in response to inquiries about joining NASCOLA (Beth Plumhoff and others) Develop new benefits of membership Associate Member Awards Program (requested by Associate Members): Sponsorship of NASCOLA institutional member dues and proficiency costs (recipient/s chosen by Associate Member); acknowledge Associate Member on website Members hosting a meeting can post announcement on NASCOLA website Associate Member Educational Programs: Associate Members offered to sponsor educational conferences with NASCOLA Members can have NASCOLA logo and link on their website Members are encouraged to contact committee members with any ideas for increasing membership, enhancing the value of membership, and to inform others of the benefits of NASCOLA membership. e. Reporting Committee (Dr. Catherine Hayward on behalf of Dr. Dorothy Adcock, Chair) The committee membership recruitment is underway, as are plans for a first survey. f. NASCOLA State of Association report (Dr. Cathy Hayward, President) 2007 Highlights Dr. Hayward thanked Beth Plumhoff (Executive Secretary) and Alvin Schmaier (Past President) for assistance and discussions throughout the year. She also thanked the Membership Committee (Betsy Van Cott) for many new initiatives, including testimonials on website, establishment of an Associate Membership Liaison (Donna Castellone), and new trainee memberships for enhanced educational initiatives. Dr. Richard Marlar (PT Survey Program Director) was recognized and thanked for the continued collaboration with ECAT (Piet Meijer). In collaboration with ECAT, new survey pilots continue and members have expanded survey menu options for A new ECAT liaison position was established with Ms. Marlies Ledford-Kraemer she was thanked for her many contributions. Dr. Hayward also described the major NASCOLA Website redesign (Catherine & David Hayward) which included migrating to new site ( and the introduction of many new features. NASCOLA continues to utlilize Survey Monkey for on-line questionnaires and meetings. Thanks were extended to Ms. Karen Moffat for her continued support of on-line questionnaire projects. Dr. Hayward recognized and thanked Dr. Ellinor Peerschke for leading the PT/EQA group on survey analysis, Dr. Jim Zehnder (NASCOLA Treasurer) for financial solvency, and the NASCOLA secretary (Dr. Dot Adcock) for contributions to NASCOLA. Dr. Adcock was also recognized for her efforts to establish the new reporting committee. The Education Committee, and its Chair, Dr. Jim Zehnder,

5 were thanked for the many NASCOLA studies, new publications, the successful NASCOLA-Mayo Conference April 26-28th, 2007 and for new meeting planning. The newly appointed Education Liaison (Bill Nichols) was recognized for his important contributions to NASCOLA education initiatives and other NASCOLA activities. Dr. Hayward reported on several new initiatives NASCOLA is pursuing. These include discussions with College of American Pathologists (CAP) on potential collaborations, between NASCOLA, CAP, and ECAT for multi-organizational surveys. The discussions are focused on new offerings (e.g. less commonly performed tests, for example, of fibrinolysis; dry challenges for assessment of postanalytical issues for specialized coagulation tests). NASCOLA is pleased to be partnering with Hemophilia Thrombosis Research Society on an educational meeting, to be held April 17-19, The meeting has an exciting program (posted on the NASCOLA bulletin board). Abstract submissions are welcomed and accepted abstracts will be published in the journal Hemophilia. 8. Other business 9. Business meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm. NASCOLA Scientific Meeting Agenda (8:15 PM- 9:00 PM) Theme: Update on NASCOLA Investigations, Publications and Plans for the Future Moderator: Dr. James Zehnder (Chair, Education committee & NASCOLA Executive committee member) 1. Ms. Marlies Ledford-Kramer, CLOT-ED and Dr. Piet Meijer, ECAT: Results of the first ECAT proficiency challenge for HIT 2. Dr. James Zehnder, Stanford Medical Center: The NASCOLA survey on HIT testing (now in press in Thrombosis and Haemostasis) and new data on how testing for HIT differs between North America and Europe 3. Dr. Menaka Pai, University of Toronto Training Program in Adult Hematology: Plans for a NASCOLA questionnaire on critical values for specialized coagulation laboratories 4. Anthony Chan, Hospital for Sick Children: Plans for a NASCOLA research on pediatric coagulation testing 5. Dr. Ellinor Peerschke, Mount Sinai Medical Center: Factor VIII Inhibitors: Update on research by the PT-EQA Committee 6.
