The locations will be voted on by the membership at the meetings. The Chapter needs to have our meeting locations donated. 4 The Ride of the Ages The Ride of the Ages When our director approached me about a doing a ride to help out our elderly, I thought it would be a great idea! Our last few fund-raisers have been in support of some younger people in need, when actually our elderly could use some things for their rooms or we can use as prizes for bingo or other games. I think they would love to see our group ride in on our Harley s. On Sunday, June 12 th, we will meet at Kwik Star in Waukon at 10:30 a.m. Please bring a few items from the list below or anything you can think of they could use. We will ride to Northgate Care Center in Waukon about 11:00 and drop off the goodies, take some pictures with some staff and residents. We will then depart for a fun ride with a lunch stop destination TBA. Hope to see a big crowd that day! Any Questions? Call Jan Ellis Items we could use: lotion, perfume, after-shave, snack-size candy or chips, sun-catchers, socks, cling decorations for windows or mirrors, combs, brushes, small cans of pop, lottery scratch tickets, videos-old time movies, small baskets for storage, small stuffed animals, stamps, assorted cards, stationary/envelopes, Kleenex, large print word find puzzle books, small fleece throws From the Safety Officer SAFETY OFFICER NOTES May 2005 How good of a rider are you? According to some studies, we are only as good as the traffic around us. We not only have to look out for ourselves, but also the traffic around us. As we enter another season of riding, let s consider some interesting data about motorcycle accidents and deaths. An article published in the Des Moines Register on March 4, 2005 gave some very interesting data on accidents and death on our beloved 2 wheelers. Motorcycle fatalities nationwide have almost doubled in recent years. Motorcyclists are six times more likely to die in a crash than any other motorists. According to the Iowa Safety Management System Motorcycle Task Force more than 40 motorcyclists die in Iowa crashes each year. Motorcyclist crash involvement is highest in Iowa riders ages 15 through 24. Fatalities are increasing among Iowa riders age 45 and older. Wow, who does this sound like? More than 90 percent of Iowa s motorcycle fatality victims were not wearing a helmet.
5 As a chapter, I feel we are a very safe group. We all try to look out for one another on our rides and for the most part try to educate our new members on our group riding style. Over the years we ve had a few parking lot spills, and a couple very lucky major incidents. I think Z can attest to just how quickly an accident can happen. Most of our chapter members have been riding for years. We have gained a feel and knowledge of the road and our machines. Does this in its self make us safe? The answer is no. Safety must be practiced every time we ride that motorcycle. Safety is like American Express, DON T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT. As we enter this new riding season, we want everyone to think safety. We only have ourselves to watch our backsides. When you get out on that road, look at the big picture and come back home with a big smile on your face. It will make everyone happy.
