2 Pre Conference Workshops Wednesday March 18, CE s 8:30am-4:30pm (All Day Workshop) Robert Ackerman, PhD Weapons of Mass Self-Destruction: Helping Recovering Clients Eliminate Self-defeating Behaviors This 6 hour workshop will focus on identifying and eliminating behaviors that cause defeat and harm to people. Many self-defeating behaviors often are behaviors that once helped a person survive a crisis. Once the crisis is over, the behaviors, even though no longer needed, are maintained. Using a cognitive behavioral approach, eliminating self-defeating behaviors and replacing them with life enhancing skills will be the goal of the workshop. 8:30am-12:00pm (AM Workshop) Colin Ross, MD 3CE s The Link Between Trauma, Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder This 3 hour ethics workshop will explain how the dissociative structural model integrates a wide range of diagnoses, symptoms, defenses and addictions into a unified treatment plan. Dr. Ross will then explain the core principles of Trauma Model Therapy. These include: the problem of attachment to the perpetrator; the locus of control shift; the problem is not the problem; just say no to drugs; and the victim-rescuer-perpetrator triangle. Specific techniques, strategies and interventions will be illustrated through case examples. Attendees are encouraged to ask for case consultation on specific treatment problems. 1:15pm-4:30pm (PM Workshop) Colin Ross, MD 3CE s Trauma and Ethics In this 3-hour workshop, Dr. Ross will discuss the ethics of working with trauma survivors. This will include: boundaries; confidentiality; record keeping; the victim-rescuerperpetrator triangle; therapeutic neutrality; the need for consultation; and informed consent. The general theme is that there are some absolute ethical rules, such as never having sexual relations with a person currently in treatment, but in some areas there is room for flexibility. It is particularly important to maintain ethical behaviors and boundaries with survivors of childhood trauma, because they have been betrayed and had their boundaries violated repeatedly. There will be time for questions and case discussion.
