2 Introduction The Bromley & Lewisham Mind Recovery College was launched in April During the first term we successfully ran 29 courses. This term, we intend to offer an even greater range of courses that combine enjoyment, fun and the knowledge enabling students achieve a greater insight and ability to manage their own mental wellbeing. Core Principles At the very heart of the Recovery College lies the principle of co-production. All our courses are designed and delivered by people with lived experience of mental health challenges working in partnership with clinicians, mental health practitioners or other professionals. All our courses are free, although a small charge is made for materials on the woodwork programme. Who Can Attend The Recovery College is open to anyone over the age of 18 with lived experience of mental health challenges, their friends, families and carers, mental health practitioners and clinicians. The only requirement is that you are resident of or registered with a GP in the London Borough of Bromley or, in the case of health professionals, that you work within the borough. How to Register The College has made several important changes for the start of the Autumn 2017 term. All prospective students must attend the core module course, What is Recovery? This course is essential for anyone undertaking a programme of study with the college. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss their choice of courses and to begin to map out a recovery pathway using an Individual Learning Plan. On completion of the core module, students will then be able to select two further courses of their own choice. For all courses marked with an asterisk (*) the What is Recovery? course is considered to be essential. If you feel you are unable to take this course but would like to take one of the courses contained within the prospectus please contact the Recovery College Coordinator, Charlie Carpenter on (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) or send an to charlie.carpenter@blmind. org.uk. There are a small number of courses for which it is not necessary to complete the Core Module. These appear without an asterisk(*). For these courses telephone Your name will be added to a list. In turn, the course tutor will contact you directly. The Recovery College remains as inclusive as possible. All our courses are free, all we ask from prospective students is commitment. In turn, we guarantee to provide the very best possible courses in terms of content and presentation. All courses are led by tutors who are highly experienced in their field and co-delivered by a person with lived experience. 1

5 Core Module What is Recovery? Whole day workshop Course tutors: Charlie Carpenter and Frankie Hughes Venue: Anchor House, 5 Station Road, Orpington, BR6 0RZ Date: Tuesday 19th September 2017, 10am - 3pm We are all on a pathway through life. This is a unique journey which brings with it many challenges both in terms of our physical and mental health. What is Recovery? is very much a practical workshop which should enable you to make a fresh start. The workshop will explore what is really meant by the term recovery, how this can be applied to us as individuals reaching out to embrace a more positive approach to life, through accepting the possibility of change and allowing ourselves to focus on a more fulfilled future. Students will be given the opportunity to use a variety of tools which should enable them to identify their personal needs and their journey through the Recovery College. All students will be offered a chance to have a one to one meeting with an experienced adviser to explore issues raised in more detail. There are no entry requirements, all that is asked for is that you approach the day with an open mind and a desire to seek out a more positive and rewarding life. Students wishing to undertake a programme of study with the Recovery College should attend this workshop. 4
6 Module 2 Understanding Mental Health Conditions Mental Health Awareness Half day workshop Course tutors: Charlie Carpenter and Kim Minter Venue: Community House, Community House, South Street, Bromley BR1 1RH Date: Tuesday 3rd October 2017, 10am - 1pm The workshop gives participants a wider understanding of the issues surrounding mental health. It will consist of a series of structured presentations allowing ample time for discussion. Students will be given time to consider what is meant by the term mental health and will be introduced to a broad range of mental health conditions commonly encountered in the community. The session will also include a practical look at what help is available and how to access it. This course will be of particular interest to people who want to care for their own mental health needs or those who offer caring support to either friends or neighbours. *Coping with Loss and Change 1 day workshop Course tutors: Charlie Carpenter and Angela Smith Venue: Beckenham Centre, 20b Hayne Road, Beckenham, BR3 4HY Date: Thursday 23rd Novmeber 2017, 10am 3pm Change is an inevitable part of life but it can prove to be both challenging in its nature and emotionally painful, especially when it involves the loss of someone close to you, a relationship breakup or the loss of a job. Loss can take many forms but in every case our response is personal and unique. This workshop examines the impact of loss on our mental wellbeing and the natural process of bereavement. We will reflect on some of the ways others have found useful in dealing with the emotional pain and discuss how we can begin to build a changed life. Hopefully, by the end of the day, students will leave with a practical toolkit which enable them to move forward. 5
7 *Build your Resilience 4 x 2 hour sessions Course tutor: Charlie Carpenter and James Devine Venue: Anchor House 5 Station Road, Orpington, BR6 0RZ Begins: Tuesday 10th October 2017, 2pm - 4pm One of the most important challenges facing all of us today is how do we improve our ability to thrive and survive in any situation. This is a tough challenge. The series of workshops will examine what is really meant by the term resilience. Is it seriously possible to develop your own resilience? The answer is an emphatic yes. Gently, at your own pace, it is possible to acquire effective coping strategies. Through developing such techniques it is possible to reduce stress levels in everyday life. This course should have a very wide appeal. It is about identifying risk factors and challenging life events and developing effective coping strategies. *WRAP- Wellness Recovery Action Planning 6 x 2 hour weekly sessions Course tutors: Sue Allen, Martin Klimo and Patricia Healey Venue: Stepping Stones, 38 Mason s Hill, Bromley BR2 9JG Begins: Wednesday 4th October 2017, 2pm - 4pm Develop a personal workbook that will help give you practical support for your recovery. Decide what helps and what doesn t, and how to get more control of your life and your experience. This is very much a practical workshop, where you will learn with your own tailor made wellness recovery action plan. *Understanding Borderline Personality Disorders 2 x 3 hour sessions Course tutors: Wendy Fitzgerald and Charlie Carpenter Venue: Community House, South Street, Bromley BR1 1RH Begins: Tuesday 14th November 2017, 11am 1 pm This workshop takes an in depth look at Borderline Personality Disorder. Exactly what is a Borderline Personality Disorder? The reality is that this is a complex group of disorders, all of which exist on a spectrum ranging from the very mild to the more severe. How do the behaviours and experiences associated with BPD impact on our lives, and what practical steps can we take to alleviate their symptoms? 6
8 Depersonalization Single one day workshop Course tutors: Frankie Hughes and Georgina Loucaidou Venue: Bromley United Reform Church, 20 Widmore Road, Bromley BR1 1RY Date: Friday 27th October 2017, pm Do you ever feel like you are in a different world, and that life has passed you by? This could be described or even diagnosed as depersonalization or derealisation. Depersonalisation or Dissociative Disorders are a remarkably common and a deeply unpleasant condition. The conference which will include keynote speakers together with informal seminars which will set out to explore the world of depersonalization. There will be a particular focus on its possible causes and its impact on everyday life. During the afternoon, the discussions will focus on practical ways of dealing with the condition. This conference should be of great interest both to those who experience the condition and to health professionals and those who support sufferers. Light refreshments will be provided. *The C.L.E.A.N.E.R. Living Health and Wellness Therapy Programme 1 day workshop Course tutor: Chris Tuck Venue: Venue 28, 28 Beckenham Road, Beckenham, BR3 4LS Date: Tuesday 3rd October 2017, 10am-2pm This is an introductory workshop to aid recovery from physical, mental, sexual abuse and adversity. Empowering you to Break the Cycle of what is holding you back, encouraging you to take small positive steps forward. You can heal and recover from the impact of abuse and violence you suffered. This workshop should be of particular interest to both men and women who are victims of and survivors of childhood abuse and who want to take the next step in their recovery to full health and wellness. The workshop will examine the nature, causes and impact of stress and trauma on your mental and physical health. Participants will leave with a practical toolkit of techniques to manage their everyday and long term stress through positive mind set, nutrition, fitness and de-stressing. 7
9 Module 3 Moving On, Becoming a Volunteer *Mental Health First Aid 2 x 1 day workshops Course tutor: David Holmes Venue: Anchor House, 5 Station Road, Orpington, BR6 0RZ Dates: Monday 30th October and Tuesday 31st October 2017, 10am pm This course helps you to help people who are developing a mental health problem. It will help you to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, providing early assistance and information about appropriate help. The course will focus on what is meant by mental health and mental ill health, anxiety and depression, psychosis, knowledge of effective interventions, how to access professional help and how to support someone experiencing mental health problems. *Introduction to Recovery College Course Facilitation 1 Day Workshop Course tutors: Charlie Carpenter and Frankie Hughes Venue: Anchor House, 5 Station Road, Orpington, BR6 0RZ Date: Tuesday 5th December 2017, 10am 3.00pm Becoming a course tutor can be an immensely rewarding experience. At the heart of the Recovery College lies the principle of co-production. As far as possible, our courses are led by people who have a lived experience of mental health or who are mental health professionals working in partnership. This one day workshop provides an introduction to the basic skills required in order to successfully lead a course and is essential for anyone contemplating becoming a course tutor. 8
10 What is Befriending? 1 day workshop Course tutor: David Holmes Venue: Beckenham Centre, 20b Hayne Road, Beckenham BR3 4HY Date: Wednesday 18th.October 2017, 10am - 2pm Befriending can make an enormous difference to the lives of those experiencing a mental health condition. As a volunteer befriender, you could make a positive contribution. Befriending is about developing a trusting and caring relationship with some who may be isolated or lacking in confidence. It is not an offer of a permanent friendship but it is a limited commitment which focuses on helping the befriendee to regain a feeling of self-worth and taking part in social activities together. It is not about counselling or giving advice, nor will you be replacing a mental health professional. You will not be called upon to undertake physical assistance nor any care work. It could involve helping people to improve their physical health through visits to a gym, becoming involved in a new hobby, improving independence through the use of public transport or simple networking through visits to support sessions, team building days or even a coffee shop. This is an exciting challenge. 9
11 Module 4 Returning to Employment The courses in this module are intended for those who feel that they are ready to make the move into paid employment and are run by specialist employment advisers who have a wealth of experience in supporting people who are embarking on this challenging and potentially life changing move. *Disability in the Workplace 2 x 2 hour sessions Course tutors: Sue Mall and Jenny Wade Venue: Stepping Stones, 38 Mason s Hill, Bromley, BR2 9JG Begins: Wednesday 20th September 2017, 2pm - 4pm The course is run specifically for people who would like to return to some form of employment. Practical in nature, the course deals with issues surrounding the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) system. Identity checks, disclosure and reasonable adjustments. This course could prove very useful for anyone taking this major step forward. *Preparing for Work 4 x 2 hour workshops Course tutor: Rebecca Edmondson Venue: Anchor House, 5 Station Road, Orpington, BR6 0RZ Dates: Tuesday 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th October 2017, 10.30am 12.30pm Applying for jobs is a stressful experience, it is easy to become nervous and under perform during an interview, with the risk that you lose out on the job. This workshop aims to help people create their own CV, identify the skills and abilities to complete online job applications and prepare for a job interview. The workshop is designed to empower you to present yourself positively, increase your confidence and help achieve your goals towards employment. The course will include a job coaching session provided by an employment specialist. This should enable you to take the first steps towards seeking voluntary or paid employment, and also help you overcome the sometimes uncomfortable feelings about selling yourself positively. 10
12 *Updating your Information Technology 6 x 2 hour sessions Course tutors: Sally Baxter and Stuart Bartlett Venue: Cotmandene Centre, 64 Cotmandene Crescent, St.Paul s Cray, Orpington BR5 2RG Begins: Thursday 5th October 2017, 10am 12pm Many employers now expect a basic competency in IT. This course focusses on the core Microsoft applications. It provides an excellent bridge for those who are comfortable in the use of either a laptop or a PC, who can undertake basic tasks such a simple internet searches, sending and receiving s and completing basic documents using Word but are rusty in the use of the more professional applications. This course would also be of interest to those who simply want to improve their IT skills. 11
13 Module 5 Personal Wellbeing and Health *Brain Train 6 x 2 hour sessions Course tutors: Charlie Carpenter, Keith Sykes and Mytime instructors. Venue: Bromley Mytime The Pavilion Centre, The Glades, Kentish Way, Bromley BR11 3EF Begins: Thursday 5th October 2017, 1.30pm 3.15pm This is for those who feel rather sluggish, have a feeling that they ought to be more active but who find the idea of exercise daunting. Staying active promotes wellbeing and better mental health. It can lift your mood, reduce stress, help you deal with negative emotions and even help with depression and anxiety. The six week course will combine practical coping strategies with physical activity sessions open to all abilities. The physical aspect of the Brain Train will be delivered by Mytime Active s friendly team of professional activity instructors. They will tailor the activities to find out what works for you. Alongside the weekly sessions you will be given a free six week gym pass, allowing you to access MyTime leisure and swimming facilities in your own time. *Everyday Energy 3 x 2 hour sessions plus 1 x 4 hour session Course tutors: David Powell, Warren Dunkley (Oxleas), Ernesto Williams (Oxleas) and Roman Gupta Venue: Orpington Baptist Church, Station Road, Orpington BR6 0RZ Dates: Tuesday 5th, 12th and 26th September 2017, 1pm 3pm For all first time humans, this workshop will help you work with your own circumstances and make the most of your oomph. Discover different ways to access information, support and facilities. During the course, we will start with the practical, ordinary changes to your life such as nutrition and exercise. Then build up the momentum with bite-sized activities that you can learn quickly and come easily to you. We will help you decide how to integrate these into your life naturally, so that you feel that you are managing your own time and improving skills that are valuable to you. Before you know it, you will be free range. 12
14 *How to stay calm Introduction to Meditation 2 x 2 hours Course tutors: Rebecca Edmondson and Charlotte Wade Venue: Community House, South Street, Bromley BR1 1RH Begins: Wednesday 18th October 2017, 11am 1pm This course is a powerful toolkit to help strengthen both mental and physical health. The course will examine the benefits of meditation and will introduce students to some simple techniques, including guided meditation sessions which can be accessed via the Internet. *Telling Your Story 4 x 2 hour sessions Course tutors: Frankie Hughes, Denise Tarrant and Louise MacNamara Venue: Orpington Baptist Church, Station Road, Orpington BR6 0RZ Begins: Wednesday 5th November 2017, 1.30om 3.30pm This is a gentle, relaxed exploring of your personal recovery pathway. It is very much a workshop, exchanging ideas, exploring themes together. The group will ask the question what is recovery in the context of mental health and how does this apply to me. As part of the course, you will create a collage and put together a treasure box. You will also complete a Wellness Recovery Action Plan along with a PATH. The PATH is all about mapping out your future hopes and aspirations. *Yoga for the Mind 8 x 2 hours sessions Course tutors: Marina Bulgarelli and Helen Fowler Venue: Venue 28, 28 Beckenham Road, Beckenham, Beckenham, BR3 4LS Begins: Friday 6th October 2017, 11am 1pm This course is ideal for those new to yoga. It combines yoga therapy and mindfulness using techniques, developed by Heather Mason at the Minded Institute. It is ideal for those who experience anxiety, stress and mild depression. During the first 5 weeks, there is an emphasis on regulation skills. Yoga offers many techniques to regulate and soothe the nervous system, through this it is a very mindful process. During the final three sessions, students are introduced to the more formal practice of mindfulness. Students will be provided with a free manual together with a CD to enable continued practice at home. Marina Bulgarelli is an Occupational Therapist who has worked in mental health over the past 10 years in mental health, she is a trained yoga teacher and therapist. She also teaches meditation, relaxation techniques and chanting meditation. Helen Lewes is a trained British Wheel of Yoga Hatha teacher and a Kundalini teacher. She currently works as a Mental Health Yoga Practitioner on the inpatient ward at the Priory, Hayes. 13
15 Module 6 Creativity and Self-Expression *Acting for Life 8 x 2.5 hour sessions Course tutors: Roxana Graves, Megan Mc.Gery and Georgina Loucaidou Venue: Bromley Central Library, High Street, Bromley BR1 1EX Begins: Wednesday 20th September 2017, 1.30pm 4pm Learn to express yourself creatively through the medium of drama. We will be using improvisation, role play, mime, movement, speech and script work to explore ourselves and our relationships with others and the world around us, in a safe and supportive environment. This course provides a great way to improve communication skills and build confidence. No previous acting experience is required. What a Performance 6 x 3 hour sessions plus 2 rehearsals Course tutors: Roxana Graves, Megan Mc.Gery and Georgina Loucaidou Venue: Bromley Central Library, High Street, Bromley BR1 1EX Begins: Wednesday 25th October 2017, 5pm 8 pm For those who have previously attended Acting for Life or those who have an interest in acting and performance. We will spend 6 weeks finding a name for ourselves, devising, rehearsing and finally performing! This is a great opportunity to be as creative as possible as part of a supportive team. If you would rather not perform there are opportunities to be part of a backstage crew. It will likely be necessary to organise one or two extra rehearsals nearer to the end of the course, which can be agreed together. It is important that you are available to attend all the sessions. 14
16 *Healthy Living with Healthy Cooking 8 x 2.5 hours Course tutor: Lina Tsakmakis and Carly Taylor Venue: Orpington Baptist Church, Station Road, Orpington BR6 0RZ Begins: Tuesday 26th September 2017, 2.30pm 5pm Whatever kind of cook you are going to be, we are here to teach you the fundamental skills that will build your confidence in the kitchen and help you to develop a lifelong enthusiasm for cooking. This course really does change people s lives for the better, opening up a new world of cookery and food. The course will take you from an enthusiastic novice to a practical working level. This course is almost entirely hands-on and is designed to teach you the essentials of cookery. We will cover the essentials of baking, basic sauces, meat and fish and how to make puddings. We will also look at dietary needs and managing on a limited budget. You will leave the course with a wealth of new skills and the confidence to continue your journey and enjoyment of cooking great food. Students are required to purchase their own ingredients for this course. *An Introduction to Dance 6 x 2 hour sessions Course tutors: Sophie Tolley and Carla Eve Venue: Venue 28, 28 Beckenham Road, Beckenham BR3 4LS Begins: Wednesday 4th October 2017, 11am 1pm Interested in learning how to dance? Come along to these creative sessions to learn exciting dance technique and routines in a variety of styles including: Contemporary, Musical Theatre and more. Have a go at choreographing your own movement and above all have fun. *Writing without Boundaries 6 x 2 hour sessions Course tutor: Carly Taylor and Megan McGery Venue: Beckenham Centre, 20b Hayne Road, Beckenham BR3 4HY Begins: Friday 13th October 2017, 2pm - 4pm Learn to explore your emotions and feelings through words, finding inspiration from your experiences. Share your own story or a story you would like to share in a safe and supportive environment. 15
17 Woodworking for the Beginner 8 x 3 hour sessions Course tutor: Andrew Stallard and Anita Friary Venue: Stepping Stones, 38 Mason s Hill, Bromley, BR2 9JG Begins: Monday 4th September 2017, 10am - 12pm Working with wood can be an enormously creative and rewarding experience. This course is designed to help people get started with working with wood. It will include practical skills training with an opportunity to construct simple pieces. Woodworking for the More Advanced 8 x 3 hour sessions Course tutors: Andrew Stallard and Anita Friary Venue: Stepping Stones, 38 Mason s Hill, Bromley BR2 9JG Begins: Friday 8th September 2017, 1.30ppm 4.30 pm This course builds on the skills acquired on the Woodworking for Beginners course or for people who have pre-existing skills acquired elsewhere. The course provides the opportunity to work under guidance planning and making pieces. *Creative Recovery through Art: The masks we wear 10 x 3 hour sessions Course tutors: Denise Tarrant and Paul Gadsdon Venue: Orpington Baptist Church, Station Road, Orpington BR6 0RZ Begins: Monday 25th September 2017, 9.30am 12.30pm Explore identity and emotions through mask making using papier mache, colour, poetry, music and drama. Open to all levels although beginners are especially welcome to this friendly group. *Dance Workshop for Beginners 10 x 2.5 hour sessions Course tutors: Denise Tarrant and Paul Gadsdon Venue: Anchor House, 5 Station Road, Orpington BR6 0RZ Begins: Wednesday 20th September 2017, 10am pm Love Strictly? Learning to dance is a great way to keep fit it is sociable, fab-u-lous and great fun. Enter the world of dance, improve your stamina and enhance your mood. 16
18 *Adventures in Acrylics 10 x 3 hour sessions Course tutors: Paul Gadsdon and Denise Tarrant. Venue: Anchor House, 5 Station Road, Orpington BR6 0RZ Begins: Monday 18th September 2017, 1.30am 4.30pm An introduction to painting with acrylics: learn how to use this medium to its full potential including colour mixing, creating textures to achieve unusual effects. 17
19 Transport and Car Parking It is recommended that Recovery College students make use of public transport to attend Recovery College courses. Beckenham Car parking at Bromley & Lewisham Mind at 20b Hayne Road, Beckenham may be limited at the times of Recovery College courses held at Hayne Road and Venue 28 at 28 Beckenham Road. Please notify Beckenham Centre reception at Hayne Road if you are parking onsite whilst attending a course at Venue 28. Bus routes serving Beckenham Road: 194, 227, 354, 358. Beckenham Junction rail station and tram stop is minutes walk away from both Beckenham Recovery College venues. 18
