2 Recovery College Bexley The Recovery College Bexley provides education and training, focusing on self-management, self-determination, choice and responsibility. The courses offered are available to people with personal experience of mental distress, those who access mental health services, their carers/supporters, friends and family, and also for staff members who work alongside people suffering periods of ill health. The focus is for individuals to recognise and develop the skills they need to live the lives that they wish to live.

4 Groups: Weekly on-going groups No need to pre-book! Just come along! The following groups run at the same time each week throughout the year at our Devonshire Road venue. As a registered service user you are now welcome to join the group at any time you so wish with no need to pre-book. Just come along when it suits you! Additional weekly on-going groups that need to be pre-booked. These groups take place at a range of venues. If you are interested in attending please let a member of our team know before you attend for the first time as there may be a limited number of places attached to these groups. You may either do this upon your initial registration with our services, or by telephoning (Option 1) or ing swilson@mindinbexley.org.uk or cparkes@mindinbexley.org.uk.

5 Creative Writing Mind in Bexley s creative writing group meets every Friday afternoon. Pen and paper are supplied. If you want to write a story, read a story, play word-games and experience gentle learning and have fun within a group of likeminded people then you are welcome to come along and join us where you can increase your word power and broaden your horizons at your own pace. 7 Keep Fit & Relaxation Aimed at all levels, this is a gentle introduction to cardiovascular exercise to improve general fitness. 8 Mixed social group The Mixed Social Group meets every other week at Devonshire Road for refreshments and to chat in a supportive atmosphere. Dates: Saturdays Times: pm Venue: Mind in Bexley 2a Devonshire Road, Bexleyheath. DA6 8DS

9 Hearing Voices A series of workshops for people who experience hearing voices or seeing visions. These supportive workshops provide an opportunity to exchange information and learn from each other. The workshop is open to those who have experience of hearing voices or seeing visions whether past or present. 10 The Mind in Bexley Vietnamese and Chinese Social Club Providing support for Vietnamese and Chinese residents to engage in community activities in order to reduce isolation and improve well-being. To receive culturally specific one to one peer group support. To gain access to Welfare Rights, Advocacy and other specialist support services connected to Mind in Bexley services that help to improve quality of life. 11 Tai Chi Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. 1 per session Dates: Tuesdays Times: 9:30 10:30 am Venue: Danson Youth Centre, Brampton Road, Bexleyheath, Kent, DA7 4EZ

12 Walking Group Walking is a free, low risk and accessible form of exercise and it turns out that, combined with nature and group settings, it may be a very powerful, under-utilised stress buster. 13 Women's Well-Being social group The women s group is an opportunity for ladies to come together for coffee and a chat in a safe environment where they can feel comfortable and relaxed. Dates: Mondays Times: pm Venue: Pincott Hall, 174a Broadway, Behind Christchurch Bexleyheath

14 Art Psychotherapy Art therapy is a way of expressing ourselves. For example using painting, making sculptures etc. The aim is not to produce a masterpiece but to use your creations to explore yourself and to understand yourself better. Your art therapist will help you think about what you create and how it relates to your feelings, events or memories that may be causing you problems and distress that you are not able to talk about with anyone. Many people find art therapy can help them to learn to deal with and in some cases recover from a mental health problem. No prior skills or experience in art required to find art therapy helpful. 15 Carers Support Group This group is facilitated by the Carers support service at Mind in Bexley. For relatives and friends of someone in Bexley experiencing mental ill health and/or drug and alcohol problems. Please contact Carers Support on option 7 to discuss before attending this group. 16 Eco therapy and Open Spaces Gardening and Food growing has a range of benefits; it is physically active, mentally healthy, a place to meet people, builds confidence. Plus growing healthy nutritious food for you and your families. Why not join our green spaces. Mind in Bexley has two food growing spaces and a garden. We will be arranging workshops throughout the growing season. Eco-therapy improves mental and physical wellbeing by supporting people to be active outdoors doing gardening, food growing or environmental conservation work and other activities in nature. Mind Open Spaces winter opening times: Mind Eco-garden will remain open all year 12 noon 2pm (weather permitting) Mind Allotment Alers Road is now open Monday and Thurday 10:00 am 1:00 pm from early spring until the end of November

17 IT Training This course aims to develop your IT skills. Drop into one of our FREE sessions for friendly and informal help on the basics of using a computer and the internet. 18 Move Your Mood Move Your Mood is an exercise class specifically focussing on getting people active, raising the heart rate and thus improving the mood. The class will take place indoors and will include a range of simple exercise and movements to music. This will be followed by cool down and relaxation. This class works with all levels and exercises adapted to an individual s pace and alternatives are used if necessary. Key benefits include: It can lift your mood and release stress It is fun! It helps boost confidence and self-esteem and you can make new friends. It can lead to a better and healthier future No prior experience is required. 19 Moving Forward Support Group This workgroup is designed for those who feel that they are on their final road to recovery but who feel they can still benefit from a supported transition out of the service. Dates: Please call the office to book Venue: Mind in Bexley please check with the office

20 Pilates Pilates, pronounced Puh-Lah-Tees, takes its name from Joseph Pilates who was born in Germany in Pilates believed mental and physical health were closely connected. His method was influenced by western forms of exercise, including gymnastics, boxing and Greco- Roman wrestling. He immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method which he called Contrology for several decades. Pilates mat-work classes are not only fun, they are designed to help you improve flexibility and strength. Small equipment such as bands, toning circles and balls are used during mat-work classes to help you achieve better movement patterns and provide you with more awareness of your body - and of course to challenge you! Our instructors cater to each individual, offering alternative movements if required so there is never a reason to feel worried about your ability. 21 Mothers Embrace - Postnatal Support Group To provide support to mothers who are finding being a mum challenging, who are isolated, lonely, suffering with depression or just wanting support. Workshops will be provided from time to time to discuss such issues. 23 GOOD FOOD FOR GOOD MOOD! This workshop is designed to give you an understanding of what is a healthy diet and how your diet can affect your mood and mental well-being. Objectives: Eat well plate - basic nutrition How your diet can affect your mood Tips to think about: Food diary Goal planning Date: Monday 24 th September Time: 2:00 4:00 pm (2 hours) Venue: Mind in Bexley - 240a Broadway, Bexleyheath. 24 Sound Relaxation WS This workshop is aimed at anyone suffering with mental health issues who could benefit from relaxation. Suffering from depression and anxiety can leave you feeling isolated and out of control. Sound Therapy can be used as a tool for coping with anything such as low mood, stress and a number of different mental health issues. The application of therapeutic music is scientifically proven to calm the mind and restore balance within the body. During this workshop there will be an explanation of Sound Therapy followed by a journey with sound lasting around 45 minutes. Participants will be sitting or laying comfortably on yoga mats whilst listening to a variety of calming instruments. At the end of the session participants will be gently guided back by my voice followed by a short conversation about everyone s experiences. 25 CS Courses The following courses all take place at our Milton House Office. Please speak to a member of the Recovery Team on (Option 1) if you wish to enrol. 26 1:1 IT/Digital Training CS 1:1 training is offered for 1 hour per week over a period of four to six weeks at a local library to include the following topics: Navigating the internet Creating an address Learning how to send and reply to s An overview of social networks e.g. the opportunity to create a Facebook or Twitter account Safety tips when using the internet and Completing online forms If you are interested in improving your digital skills, then we would love to hear from you. We believe that there are many in our community who are not given the opportunity to gain digital skills, coupled with feeling a sense of isolation that would benefit greatly from digital inclusion. The programme will run for 4 to 6 six weeks for 1 hour per week with an individual digital trainer. 27 Confidence, Assertiveness and Positivity CS In association with Learning and Enterprise College Bexley The course aims to increase group members self-awareness, coping mechanisms in stressful situations and teach techniques to enable individuals to plan positively for the future. The course is in 8 modules and covers: Building Confidence Self-awareness and building positive self-image Stress management Assertiveness Goal planning This course will run for 6 weeks from the starting date. Dates: Thursday 13 th September 2018 Times: 1:00 3:00 pm Venue: Learning and Enterprise College Bexley, 5 Brampton Road, Bexleyheath

29 Emotional Resilience CS More research has shown that Emotional Wellbeing can be greatly improved by resilience. Key is identifying how we respond to emotions and using the brains placidity to build resilience. This course helps identify our relationship with emotions and provides tools to build our resilience to enhance our emotional wellbeing. This course will be run over four weeks. Dates: Wednesday 8 th August for 4 weeks Times: 10:00 am 12:00 noon Venue: Mind in Bexley, Milton House, 240a Broadway, Bexleyheath. DA6 8AS

30 Mood on Track CS The course is designed to help those individuals who have experienced severe mood changes, which may have been diagnosed as Bipolar Disorder. Most individuals who have experienced problem mood episodes will be fearful of having a relapse (or further mood episodes). One of the ways to reduce this fear is to be able to feel more in control of your mood changes. This can be achieved by learning as much as you can about them. This course is designed to help you develop the knowledge and skills to get your mood back on track. Run in partnership with Oxleas Dates: TBC Times: TBC Venue: Emerton Close, Bexleyheath. DA6

31 Power of Positivity CS Mental wellbeing describes your mental state how you are feeling and how well you can cope with day-to-day life. Our mental wellbeing can change, from day to day, month to month or year to year. If you have good mental wellbeing you are able to: feel relatively confident in yourself you value and accept yourself and judge yourself on realistic and reasonable standards feel and express a range of emotions feel engaged with the world around you you can build and maintain positive relationships with other people and feel you can contribute to the community you live in live and work productively cope with the stresses of daily life and manage times of change and uncertainty. This course is designed to provide you with practical advice to support you in achieving or retaining physical, mental and emotional health - leaving you feeling good about yourself and ready, able and willing to face life's challenges. 32 Relaxation Course Learning to relax can help reduce stress and improve concentration along with many other health benefits. This group will explore and practice different relaxation techniques. Objectives: Practicing relaxation techniques can: Slow your heart rate. Lower your blood pressure. Reduce muscle tension and chronic pain. Improve concentration and mood. Dates: Thursday 31 st July for 8 weeks Times: 11:00 am to 12:00 noon Venue: Mind in Bexley - Milton House, 240a Broadway, Bexleyheath. DA6 8AS

33 Stress and anxiety CS Stress and Anxiety was developed from the increasing need of clients suffering with anxiety. It is a short intensive 4 week course consisting of 6 modules, aimed at adults suffering from anxiety stress and anger issues. The project is based around group therapy, discussions and work sheets. The course aims to inform service users about the nature of anxiety and educate them to make decisions about treatment and coping strategies. 35 Get Your Life Back Workshop EX Learn a very simple and effective way to give up smoking, drinking, taking drugs, over-eating, gambling and any other addictive activity. The same learning (about how the mind works and how to reprogram it for change) helps with anxiety, stress and depression as well as phobias and obsessive compulsive behaviours. This workshop is brought to you by award-winning and best-selling author Chris Hill, who has used his life-experience and knowledge to help hundreds of people overcome addiction and change habitual behaviour.
