1 The Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia Newsletter AUGUST 2013 VOL. 40, NO. 1 President s Message It is with great pleasure and a sense of history that I take office as the 125 th President of the Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia. The Society dates back to 1877 when a group of physicians interested in problems peculiar to women met at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. As a resident, I was invited to my first meeting by Dr. Dorothy Barbo, a faculty member at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and a former president of the Obstetrical Society. She believed that residents should be introduced to the broader community of obstetrician-gynecologists and to the academic program of the Society. The diversity and quality of the programs has been outstanding. I am honored to be following Albert El- Roeiy, MD as president of the Society. This past year Dr. El- Roeiy explored the role of new technologies and their contribution to our specialty. His leadership and energy moved the Society forward academically and socially, as he instituted new programs and a new outlook. As a mentor, he shared his ideas, his know-how and his enthusiasm and I thank him for doing so. Each President brings his or her own perspective to the position. When I started my medical studies at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, 6% of the first year class was made up of women. By the time I completed my residency in 1977, 25% of freshman medical students nationally were women. By 2003, 50% of the first year class was female. When I began my residency at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, Kapiolani and Queen s Hospital, with Dr. Ralph Hale as Director, I was the first woman resident in the program. At present, approximately 75% of all Ob/Gyn residents are women. A bit of personal history: Before entering our residency programs, my husband and I worked with the Peace Corps in Brazil, caring for the Peace Corps volunteers and working with local organizations concerned with medical issues. One project with which I was involved was training midwives working in the interior of Brazil. At the time, the midwives carried at their waists the scissors used to cut umbilical cords. 2 (President s Address continued) the mal de sete dias or the sickness of 7 days (tetanus) was common. Our job was to teach the midwives how to sterilize the scissors and keep them in a special pouch. Instead of the contaminated scissors, t h e decorative pouch was to become the symbol of their profession. My interest in obstetrics and gynecology, and in the power of public health approaches began there and has continued to the present. After completing my residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I practiced at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1992, I received a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins and became the Director of Medical Affairs, Division of Maternal, Child and Family Health at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. The association between the health of the public and that of the individual patient is important to understand. In some of our lectures we will attempt to focus on this relationship. One example of this collaboration is our speaker on October 3, Dr. William Callahan, Chief of Maternal and Infant Health at the CDC in Atlanta, will speak about Severe Maternal Morbidity in 2013, what we know about these women and what can be done to prevent serious complications associated with child birth. On November 14, 2013, Dr. Ralph Hale, the former Executive Director of ACOG will talk about Issues Facing our Specialty and ACOG. The impact of the Affordable Care Act on our profession will be discussed. The joint meeting with PARES, the Philadelphia Area Reproductive Endocrine Society, will take place on January 9, Dr. Jeff Keenan will talk about the issue of Embryo Donation, An Underutilized Family Planning Option. On February 13, 2014, Dr. Cornelius Skip Granai, III, Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University, will talk about the progress made in Ob/Gyn and explore the theme If I Were You and You Were Me, examining the role of relationships and their impact on how we provide health care. Dr. Hani Atrash, Director of the Division of Healthy Start and Perinatal Services, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, HRSA, will talk about Preconception Health and Improving the Health of Women Before Pregnancy on March 13, On April 10, 2014, Dr. Susan Cu-Uvin, will address the progress made in HIV care: 30 Years into the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: What is New for Women and their Children at our joint meeting with the Perinatal Society. She is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice at Brown University. This will be a joint meeting with the Perinatal Society. On May 8, 2014, I will deliver the President s Address. Clearly, we have a diverse and stimulating series of lectures ahead of us this year. Our speakers are leaders in their fields and are genuinely excited to come and speak to the Obstetrical Society. Our joint meetings with PARES and the Perinatal Society allow us to meet with other sub-specialists. In addition, we continue to sponsor the Resident Education Day, the Resident Bowl and the Resident Review Course, which is being revamped this year. Our Resident Case Presentations are a popular and important part of our meeting. Reading the minutes from the Society meetings of the 1800 s gives us a fascinating sense of our history and adds to our humility when we recognize that some problems they faced in 1877 are still not solved. We hope that our newsletter keeps you informed about current issues in our community, at ACOG and in our profession. We have a dedicated group of physicians on the Council who give their time and expertise to make the Society run smoothly, and we cannot thank them enough. Our incredibly competent and committed Executive Secretary, Teri Wiseley, deals with the small and large details required to run our organization, and is an all-star without whom it would be difficult to function. I hope that you will be able to attend as many meetings as possible in order to benefit not only from the excellent programs, but also to have the rare opportunity to socialize with colleagues. 3 Past President s Message We should not view the expiration of summer as a sad event, as there are so many wonderful things to look forward to in the following months. After all, autumn still offers many warm weekends for you beach goers, a splendid colorful palette of nature's façade for all to view, and it generates anticipation for the start of the Philadelphia Obstetrical Society's lecture series. Last year's meetings highlighted the expertise of many: Arnold Advincula, MD, Medical Director of the Global Robotics Institute at Florida Hospital and world-renowned robotic surgery pioneer discussed The Evolving Role and the Current State of Robotics in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. our monthly series. I would once again like to acknowledge the unwavering commitment of our council members as many of the milestones reached last year could not have happened without their support. We would like to continue the trend of increasing membership experienced last year; so please share this year's agenda with any of your colleagues that are currently non-members. Lastly, as our Society newsletter is based largely on contributions from our members I would like to encourage your participation in this publication. Whether it is a speaker introduction or an article providing the background of an upcoming lecture your submissions are welcome. Fay Rozovsky, JD, MPH, from the Rozovsky Group discussed a subject so pertinent in today s society The Challenges of Social Media Tools What We Can Do and What We Should Not. Ron Wapner, Director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, NY. Ron, a leader in the field of prenatal fetal DNA analysis, discussed Microarray and Newer Technologies in Today s Practice of Obstetrics. Miles Murphy, MD, from the Institute of Female Pelvic Medicine, discussed Critical Evaluation of the Newest Gadgets in Uro/Gyn, a lecture that highlighted the current approach to pelvic floor disorders and the controversies related to mesh utilization. As past president I can truly appreciate the efforts of Dr. Marjorie Angert, this year's Ob Society President, in providing us with yet another superb year of lecture topics and presenters. 4 Changeover Dinner In June, the Council members of the Obstetrical Society gathered at the Moshulu to witness the passing of the gavel from Albert El-Roeiy, MD to Marjorie Angert, DO. The night included good company and good food. Plans for the upcoming year were discussed, including personnel changes on Council, finances, recruitment, and a preview of the schedule. On behalf of the entire Obstetrical Society, Council members wish to send a large thank you to Dr. El-Roeiy for all the work he did during his tenure. He devoted much time enlisting exciting speakers and organizing our monthly meetings, in order to provide a wonderful experience for our members. The schedule for the upcoming year is sure to present us with yet more provocative speakers. We wish Dr. Angert good luck as she embarks on her term as the 125th Passing on the Gavel, Drs. Angert and El-Roeiy President of the Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia. Resident Education Day The 46th Annual Resident Education Day was hosted by Crozer-Chester Medical Center on May 3 and was a great success. Kudos to Dr. El-Roeiy, the members of the Resident Education Committee, Drs. Salva, Schnatz and Quesada-Rojas, and to our Executive Secretary, Teri Wiseley for arranging a wonderfully comprehensive program. The REC thanks those physicians who helped facilitate the PRECOG activities. Thank you also to the nine residency program coordinators who provided tremendous help throughout the day. Thank you to Dr. Holly Cummings, ACOG District III Junior Fellow for her presentation about ACOG s role in residents lives and residents roles in ACOG. 5 The 46 th Annual Resident Education Day continued... Congratulations to Amy Turitz, M.D. for winning the S. Leon Israel Award in recognition for outstanding work on a research topic suitable for presentation and for publication in a peer review journal. A resident from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Turwitz won the award with her paper, Do abdominal circumference <5% and fetal weight 10-19% predict small for gestational age infants?
