Members may choose to organze projects that beneft chldren n ther communty, state, or the world. Each and every club n GFWC s asked to do a servce project on that day. It may be n any area, any type of project. OUR GOAL IS 1,000 CLUBS PARTCIPATING. GFWC has partnered wth lke-mnded organzatons that advocate on behalf of chldren everywhere. Refer to the Partnershp secton for actvtes desgned especally for GFWC clubs. IDEAS Pedatrc Unt Playtme: Ask members to donate tems such as colorng books, small jgsaw and cube puzzles, Play- Doh, and other small toys for hosptalzed pedatrc patents to enjoy durng ther stay n your local pedatrc unt. Furnture Safety: Rase awareness n your communty and help save a chld s lfe by plannng a program about the dangers of furnture tp overs and other hazards n the home. Dstrbute anchorng kts to help secure heavy furnture. Screen Tme Awareness: In ths age of dgtal meda, chldren are beng exposed to cell phones, tablets, and electronc screens as early as nfancy. Too much screen tme for chldren can lead to ssues such as obesty, rregular

2 sleep schedules and shorter duraton of sleep, behavoral problems, loss of socal sklls, volence, and less tme for play. Educate the members of your club about the new gudelnes for screen tme use for young chldren. Chld Advocacy Rbbons: Create awareness rbbons n royal blue and attach them to bookmarks or busness cards to be left at local lbrares, busnesses, or health care centers wth nformaton about your local Chld Advocacy Center and the servces they provde. Chldren s Chokng Awareness: Tolet Paper Roll Safety Project conssts of attachng a decorated tolet paper roll to cardstock paper wth the followng statement: Any toy or toy part that can pass through s a chokng hazard for chldren less than three years of age. TUTU WONDERFUL PARTY The GFWC Statesvlle Woman s Club (NC) supported Grls on the Run, an organzaton that nspres grls to be joyful, healthy, and confdent usng a fun, experence-based currculum that ntegrates runnng. Clubwomen hosted a TuTu Wonderful Party to fashon tulle tutus to donate for young grls to wear n ther 5K race. CHILDREN IN CRISIS The GFWC Junor Woman s Club of Wllamsburg (VA) contnued a hghlyregarded project wthn the club and among the communty that provded luggage wth a personal monogram for each chld n the James Cty County Foster Care Program. Snce chldren n foster care are extremely transent, club members wanted to gve them a sense of securty and a place for all of ther belongngs. HALLOWEEN COSTUMES CLOSET GFWC Plymouth (PA) offered new and used Halloween costumes to chldren for a town parade. At the end of September, flyers were dstrbuted announcng the event and requestng donatons of costumes. Members had purchased costumes at bargan prces after the prevous Halloween. Two dstrbuton days allowed chldren to try on and select the perfect costume. Parents were encouraged to return the costumes so they could be repared and cleaned to be ready for the next year. GFWC ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN WEEK To rase awareness for GFWC s chld advocacy efforts, GFWC has declared the fourth week n October as GFWC Advocates for Chldren Week. All GFWC Women s, Junor, and Junorette clubs are nvted to partcpate by plannng events related to the Junors Specal Program. Try a new project or a prevously successful one. It s up to you! Consder your club s nterests and communty needs. Contact your Governor/Mayor to request they proclam ths week as GFWC Advocates for Chldren Week for your state/cty. Sunday, October 21 - Saturday, October 27, 2018 Sunday, October 20 - Saturday, October 26, 2019 GFWC AZ CARES FOR KIDS GFWC Arzona (AZ) developed a Cares 4 Kds program, presentng each club wth a starter kt (24 large plastc bags, program nserts that could be personalzed wth the club name, and over 80 chldren s tems, such as colorng books, bubbles, and toys). Clubs were encouraged to be creatve fllng ther bags (toletres, art, emergency supples, etc.) and choosng where to dstrbute bags. Over 700 bags have been delvered to domestc volence shelters, emergency centers, etc. 2

3 GFWC PARTNERSHIPS GFWC partners are organzatons wth whom GFWC has establshed a formal relatonshp and mutual understandng. Our partners offer unque and customzed servces: materals, speakers, kts, and/or addtonal nformaton specfcally desgned for GFWC clubs. They are aware of GFWC clubs specfc needs, our organzatonal structure, and have a sgned Memorandum of Understandng wth GFWC. GFWC partners wll assst n montorng the donatons generated by GFWC members. Blankets for Babes Project March of Dmes hosts baby showers for mltary famles through ther msson: Healthy Baby Program. GFWC clubwomen can get nvolved by provdng these famles wth baby blankets. Turn your Club House purple for preemes on November 17. Premature brth s brth that happens too soon, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Babes born ths early are more lkely to de before ther frst brthday; those who survve are more lkely to be readmtted to the hosptal or to suffer lfelong health problems. Each year n the Unted States, about 1 n 10 babes s born prematurely. Each club can Go Purple wth these four easy steps durng November to rase awareness of the crss of preterm brth durng March of Dmes Prematurty Awareness Month: Promote March of Dmes Prematurty Awareness Month at a club meetng. These events rase sgnfcant funds for St. Jude and allow us to contnue our lfe-savng msson of fndng cures and savng chldren. There are a varety of opportuntes avalable: Pre-Event Support Commttee Leadershp Roles These roles drve our Sponsorshp, Table and Tcket Sales, Aucton Recrutment, Restaurant Recrutment, PR & Marketng, and Recrutng of Volunteers. Commttee development s vtal to the success of our events. Offce Help Our Lead staff need help wth malngs, follow-up calls, computer data entry, goode bags, favors, and event set-up and teardown. 6 Trke-A-Thon The St. Jude Trke-A-Thon s a fun, servce learnng program for daycares and preschools that teaches trke and rdng toy safety whle helpng the chldren of St. Jude. Any advocate for chldren can make a dfference wth the St. Jude Trke-A-Thon. If you sgn up to become a coordnator, St. Jude wll provde everythng you need to have a great event at a preschool or daycare n your area. Log on to org/get-nvolved to fnd out more. Mask Straps for St. Jude Patents Do you have seamstresses n your club? Consder meetng to assemble bags wth materals to make mask straps for the chldren at St. Jude and havng seamstresses takng the bags home to complete the project wth ther personal sewng machnes. Mask straps are used to mprove the comfort level for patents requred to wear masks to prevent the spread of nfecton or protect our patents from nfecton. These mask straps replace the elastc band that comes standard on the mask. Patents report the flannel and fleece materal feel much better aganst ther cheek and causes far less rubbng than the orgnal elastc band. Patterns and specfc nformaton for ths project can be found at mask-straps.html. Watng Room Fun Bags Fll a sealed zppered plastc bag wth fun thngs a chld or teen can do as they wat to vst the doctor. Make bags age-specfc but generc enough for a boy or a grl. Include thngs such as: crayons, markers, colored pencls, paper, colorng books, and stckers. Each State Federaton may submt one State Award Entry Cover Sheet and one Club Creatvty Award Entry Cover Sheet for the Junors Specal Program Communty Servce Program projects.
