Why? Why?
North Mersey has one of the highest levels of deprivation in the UK, which affects the health of children and young people many of whom become our patients
In October 2007, we launched our Public Health Strategy In July 2008 we were accredited England s First Paediatric, World Health Organisation Health Promoting Hospital.
!"#$! %&!'!' ( )
Evidence For Change Breastfeeding Current statistics for North Mersey show Breastfeeding rates are around 66% compared to England average of 78% Weight Management In Liverpool 22.6% of children in Year 6, are classed as Obese compared to the England average of 18.8% Smoking Data suggests that 20% of our patients are exposed to second-hand smoke Alcohol 74 Young peoples attended our accident and emergency intoxicated from Alcohol over the past year
CQUIN Targets Smoking CQUIN 2008/2009 Smoking and Alcohol CQUIN 2009/2010 Smoking, Alcohol and Brief Intervention Training 2010/2011 Smoking, Alcohol, Brief Intervention Training, Breastfeeding and Weight Management 2011/2012
Smoking CQUIN Smoking CQUIN is aimed at prevention of children and young people s exposure to second-hand smoke Questions on smoking status have been included as part of our admission process for all inpatients. This is aimed at parents who smoke and also young people We appreciate that quitting smoking during a hospital admission is not always a viable option. Due to this we have also included the information on discharge We are a smoke free site and battle to maintain this across the trust We work in partnership with Tobacco free futures to make smoking history for all children We have our own branded campaign Alder Hey say No Way which features, banners in car parks, posters across the organisation and business cards which our concierge team give to parents who smoke which have support details
Around 7% of our parents report they smoke 6% of smokers requested a smoking pack while in our care which contains information regarding support available for them in the hospital and local community 5% of smokers are referred to smoking cessation support
Brief Intervention Training Programme We have successfully developed child friendly brief intervention tool kit and are planning to pilot in OPD/AED by year end with view to further roll out in 2012/2013. We have five staff across the organisation who are qualified to deliver the training to staff within their teams Brief Intervention Training for Staff 2009/ / /2012 Aim to train 420 staff by year end
We have a dedicated health promotion team who work within the trust to co-ordinate Health Promotion Initiatives and campaigns for patients, parents families and staff.

Our health promotion partners include Premier league football team Everton and we became a key client of Everton in the Community programme which provides multi-skilled workshops on the wards at Alder Hey.
The programme encourages me to take part in physical activity; it gives me the chance to get certificates which makes me work harder as I get a sense of achievement. The workshop gives me variety in my day and a chance to see and talk to new people, which I really love. It is exciting and because of this, It gives me something to look forward to. But most of all it makes me feel valued by people outside my family and carers and it is FUN!. Jessica
Through our work with The Everton Foundation we won a Special Recognition Award from Liverpool Primary Care Trust. We were also shortlisted for the Echo Pride of Merseyside Awards 2010.

We take Breastfeeding very seriously and have recently set up a Bosom Buddies Breastfeeding Interest Group which has 45 champions from across the trust. We meet monthly to discuss issues and also disseminate information.

Our children get to grips with Brushing Changi s tusks as part of our Smile Week
$( ) On average, 41 children a year are treated at our trust following severe burns from Hair Straighteners. Almost all of these burns were as a result of children touching hair straighteners belonging to a family member at home.
We support the Smoke Free Families Initiative which is being delivered across Liverpool via Sure Start Children s Centres and Alder Hey. *+,
