2 THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY MISSION The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. PEDIATRIC CANCER In 2015, an estimated 10,380 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and 1,250 deaths will occur among children aged birth to 14 years. Mortality rates for childhood cancer (those aged birth to 14 years) have declined by 67% over the past four decades.
