PDG Randal Clapp has led us through the initial year of building a new district. We are coming together as One district seizing Opportunities to serve others in an Outstanding manner. We are knitted together for service as the Oh Yeah District 31-O. As with any knitting, the stitches combine to make an awesome project. Our Lions clubs are the stitches of District O. The project for us is service! For our district to continue growing, communication is essential. My responsibility includes communicating the policies and themes of Lions s International to you as well as sharing the events of our district. Your job: TO COMMUNICATE WITH ME! My phone lines and e -mail are open to each of you to share your concerns, promotions, and successes. Please use them. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Greensboro *There is a $5.00 registration fee for the Awards and Installation Banquet to cover the costs which include a light lunch catered by the Siler City Lions. 2 Knitted continued: The club officer leadership training was held on May 7 in Siler City. Thank you to each of the officers and new members who attended. 18 of our 60 clubs were represented; that is only 30% of our district. I am considering offering a second session as part of the 1 st cabinet meeting in August. Each month in the coming newsletters we will be featuring one of the 11 zones in random order. Your zone chairs will be asked to submit an article about the clubs and what they do: especially service projects. Stay in touch with your zone chair and be ready to toot your own horns and share. I am writing this article before leaving for Fukuoka, Japan for the International Convention. Lion Dale and I are excited about this leg of our journey in serving the Lions of District 31-O. While there, we will learn about Incoming President Bob Corlew s theme New Mountains to Climb. I will be sharing that information with you in the next newsletter. Effective July 1, we will each be given a new 8,760 hours in our Lions year. Let s plan to use them effectively, serving our God, our families, those in need, and Lions. In Lionism, Lion Laraine Publicity Gets the Lions Message Out and Can Help Promote Membership college resources. Also, Lions s International at Lions s.org is a great resource for help with online training whether it be developing club websites or using social media. Every Lions needs to let its community know what its mission is and how it is helping meet the needs of local and area citizens. Developing an effective publicity program varies from community to community depending on its size, types of media available, and the comfort level of club members to communicate its activities. Most of us are familiar with traditional media such as local newspapers and radio stations, and then there are various types of community bulletin boards, printing methods such as newsletters, signs, posters, etc. to promote projects and activities. Of course, today we are moving rapidly into the world of digital media where some of us old-timers need either extensive training or recruitment of younger members who possess these skills. This is where young LEO members can help or perhaps area community But, for many of us in smaller community settings, just getting our news in the local newspaper or on the radio station, is a worthy goal. This is where knowing your audience and those who control the media outlets are vital. As a member of your community, you already are familiar with your audience, whether it s your friends and neighbors, fellow church goers, those you see at coffee shops or beauty salons. So the next step is getting to know a contact at the news media outlet. That can be an editor or reporter or radio station staff member. Meet and get to know them. Learn the format that they prefer to see in news submissions. Whatever you can do to make their job easier as they sort through a busy day of news copy can mean the difference in getting your news published in a prominent position or left in a stack for another day. 3 Prepare for Success One of the past leadership chairs in our state, PDG Jerry Austin, encouraged incoming governors to remember the 5 Ps for success: proper planning prevents poor performance. He gave each incoming governor a small vial containing 5 peas to remind them. That advice is something that we can use in each of our Lions s. Each club is encouraged to spend time planning your year: setting goals, developing action plans, and setting budgets. Setting SMART goals gives us purpose for our time. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound goals will help our Lions year be more effective. s can set goals for new service projects, fundraising, growth and other areas that are relevant for the individual club. Developing a new service project would be an excellent choice. Developing action plans gives us concrete plans on reaching individual goals. Many of you have an action plan for your fundraisers: Step-by-step actions, who is responsible for each step, a time frame for each step, and timely reviews to assess the progress. Incorporate that planning process to attain each of your goals. Setting budgets gives us a tool to operate efficiently. District dues will be $14.00/member with an additional convention fee of $3.00/member for a total of $17.00/ member. Perhaps this information will be helpful as you set your budgets for the year. Publicity continued: Study community news items from other clubs or organizations. They will vary in detail, but all will follow the basic Who, What, Where, and When format depending on the purpose of the story. If it s about an upcoming project, fundraiser, or achievement, always start the story with that information and then add details. There s an old saying in journalism, names make the news, so be sure to get all names relevant to a story both first and last. The submission of photos, if applicable, is very important to any publicity program. Most local publications will accept a printed photo as well as news articles, but many now prefer that they be sent electronically. For example, you can send an with attachments of a story and photo. Be sure to always properly identify people in a photo from left to right or note their positioning. All news submissions to either newspapers or radio should have a heading denoting subject or organization name. And always follow that with the name of the sender along with phone numbers home and mobile in case there is a question. A great resource for public relations tools can be found on the Lions s.org website. Click on Lions Member Center, then Managing a, and then go to Communicate Your Activities. Here you will find press release samples for a number of subject areas such as recruiting new members, service projects, recognition events, other special events, and some relating to LEO s. Lions s, whether you re near a big city or in a small town, all serve the needs of local communities. As the world's first Leo club, the Abington High School Leo created the Leo acronym Leadership, Equality, Opportunity and chose their school colors, maroon and gold to serve as the Leo club colors. Later, Equality was changed to Experience. In October 1967, the board of directors of Lions s International adopted the Leo Program as an official program of the association. The first is the week of August 8-14 which is designated as Worldwide Week of Service for Youth. This international event is designed to inspire the next generation of volunteers and help us reach our Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 100+ million people. The second date is August 15 th which is the date to submit the District s nomination for the Leo of Excellence. This year our district will be submitting the Eastern Guilford High School Leo as nominated by Leo Advisor PDG Randal Clapp.

6 District 31-O Awards & Installation Banquet Saturday July 16, 2016 The First Annual Awards and Installation Luncheon for District 31-O will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016, First United Methodist Church, 1101 Raleigh St., Siler City, NC. The Awards Program will begin at 11:00AM in the church fellowship hall. Governor Randal Clapp will be presenting his awards for a very successful year. A light lunch catered by the Siler City Lions will follow. The Installation for the District Cabinet will begin around 1:30pm. PID Harvey Whitley will be the keynote speaker and installing officer. All Region, Zone, and Committee Chairs and their guests are encouraged to attend. Please complete and return the following registration form so that the Siler City Lions can properly prepare.
