Sharing and Caring: A Perinatal Loss Seminar September 25, 26, 27, 2015 Continuing Education Credits Available Spencer Road Community Commons, St. Peters, MO Provides individuals the tools needed to work with families who have experienced the tragic death of a baby through early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or in the first few months of life. Explores pertinent topics such as the Rights of Parents, Understanding the Grief Process, How to Run a Support Group Effectively, and How to Gain the Support of Hospital Staff.

2 The Sharing and Caring workshop is a 2.5 day, intensive training taught by a team of professionals selected based on their experience with perinatal loss. Purpose Provides individuals the tools needed to work with families who have experienced the tragic death of a baby through early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or in the first few months of life. Explores pertinent topics such as the rights of parents, understanding the grief process, how to run a support group effectively, and how to gain the support of hospital staff. Who Should Attend? This workshop is open to anyone who wants to start their own Share Group, chaplains, social workers, counselors, nurses, and parent advocates and other community caregivers. If you have experienced the death of a baby, your initial loss must have occurred at least 18 months prior to attending this training. Mission of Share While Share s primary purpose is to provide support to grieving parents at the time of and/or following the death of a baby, the secondary purpose is to provide information, education and resources on the needs and rights of bereaved parents and siblings. The objective is to aid those in the community in their supportive role. In order to meet this objective, the National Share Office holds a training workshop twice each year to aid those who work with bereaved parents. Continuing Education Credits This activity has been approved by the Missouri Nurses Association for nursing contact hours. The Missouri Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. 3 Topics Included Reflections on Perinatal Loss...Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow This session is an overview of the evolvement of the standards of perinatal bereavement care and the important role of the caregiver. Perinatal Grief: Variations in the Experience, Expression and Effect of Bereavement in Parents After exploring the grief journey of parents following the death of a baby and the obstacles that may interfere with healthy grieving, participants will be able to recognize the common effects of loss on parents, anticipate the reactions of extended family and others within the family s circle of support, identify complicated grief issues, as well as provide coping techniques to those they serve. This session will provide thorough examination of the grief process. Difficult Decisions The complexities of the decision making process for families given a prenatal diagnosis of an anomaly or lifethreatening illness can be overwhelming for both parents and their caregivers. Through this session, participants will gain knowledge about how to provide impartial support the decision-making process, the significance of the care they provide and methods to identify specific resources for future support. Caring for Yourself Caregiving comes with both rewards and challenges. This session will teach participants the importance of caring for their own needs so they can better serve grieving families. Establishing a Share Program This session identifies the necessary steps and components in creating a bereavement program. Participants will gain valuable concepts for working with organizational leadership and community support for their program Rights of Parents: Choices or Mandates Using Share s The Rights of Parents as a guide, participants will discover ways improve their communication and comfortably present opportunities for families bond and honor their baby. Cultural and Social Diversity Through examining how culture, religion and socially diverse situations can impact the ways families react and heal following the death of a baby, participants of this session will learn how to assist families with integrating their unique traditions within their grief process. Memory Making Participants will learn the value of memory making as a significant component to perinatal bereavement care. They will explore ideas for creating mementos at the time of a loss, how to integrating memory making activities into the support group setting as well as to assist families in incorporating memory making into the course of their lives. How to Run an Effective Share Aftercare Program Gain insight into the methods to establish, maintain and promote a support group through this valuable session. Participants will be able to recognize opportunities for increasing awareness, discover how to troubleshoot issues, explore electronic aftercare support components, and improve their management skills. Sustaining Your Program (No CEU s awarded for this workshop) The basic structure of a non-profit organization and the strategies that make a non-profit successful, as well as concepts of measuring performance will be defined and detailed. Insights into developing fundraising opportunities and budget management will also be examined. Share Companion Program Peer companions are an essential component of a successful perinatal bereavement program. Through this session, participants will understand evidence-based strategies developing qualified peer companions and care through the use of care extenders. 3

4 Costs Fees include all workshop materials and lunch on Wednesday and Thursday. 1st registrant: $500 More than 2 registrants: $400 each* * This discount is available ONLY to registrants attending the same training and cannot be split between the Fall and Spring sessions.* Completed registrations must be received two weeks prior to the first day of workshops. 6 About the Presenters Patti Budnik, BSN Share Companion Coordinator With over 20 years of NICU and Labor & Delivery nursing experience, Patti has seen first-hand the benefits of Share programs both for her patients and for herself as a professional. She joined the National Share staff in 2013 as the primary liaison for the Share Companion program. In her role, Patti provides education regarding standards of perinatal bereavement care and Rights of Parents. Rose Carlson, BS Share Program Director Rose came to Share in 2002 as a volunteer and eventually joined the staff in She has a BS in Psychology with a minor in Sociology and her personal experience as a bereaved parent brings an invaluable perspective to her work. Rose does much of the research for Share materials and has published articles in several professional journals throughout the country. Debra Cochran, BSN, MA Share Executive Director Debbie joined the Share staff in 2013, bringing more than twenty years in healthcare leadership experience. Her background includes Hospital Education, Home Health, Hospice, as well as a variety of hospital departments, and twelve years of Healthcare Policy at the federal level. She has also served on various boards and community organizations. Amy Frankel, PhD Psychologist Amy is a mental health professional specializing in clinical psychology. Her practice offers individual, group and family therapy in hospital, residential and outpatient settings. Her expertise lies in depression, anxiety, adolescent issues, divorce and women s issues. Amy has been educating professionals for more than 10 years. Kelly Karavousanos, LPC, CT Grief Counselor Kelly is a Licensed Professional Counselor working for Baue Funeral Homes in St. Charles, MO and serves her local community through educational workshops and grief support groups. She attended Lindenwood University for her Masters in Counseling and has attended Grief Counseling Training with Alan Wolfelt, PhD at the Center for Loss and Life Transitions. It is Kelly s passion to companion the bereaved through the most difficult time in their lives. Catherine Lammert, RN, Share Education Coordinator Cathi has worked as an obstetrical nurse and been involved with Share since She served as Share s Executive Director until Now as Education Coordinator, Cathi conducts workshops around the country for professionals, clergy and bereaved parents, writes on perinatal bereavement issues, and helps organize and plan national perinatal bereavement conferences. As a founding member of Pregnancy Loss and Infant Death Alliance (PLIDA) she also served two terms as PLIDA S president. She has also been involved with key legislative issues dealing with pregnancy loss and infant death. Megan Nichols, BS Share Development & Public Relations Director Megan joined the National Share staff in 2008 with a background in marketing, design and business administration. Through her role, she manages all fundraising activities that help sustain National Share programs and services. Megan is tremendously connected to the agency s mission after her brother s death in 1982 and she has been volunteering for Share since Megan received her Bachelor of Science in Advertising and Marketing Communications from Webster University. Jennifer Stachula, Share Chapter Coordinator Jenn joined the Share staff in June 2011 with years of experience working in various areas of social services. As the primary point of contact at the national office, Jenn delivers much needed bereavement services daily across the country to both grieving families and caregiving professionals. She also manages the relationships between the national office and local Share chapters as well as those interested in forming a Share chapter. Jenn received her Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Pastoral Care from Quincy University. 6
