4 New Programs Transitional Living Program Family Resources has been awarded a federal grant to create the Prism Transitional Living Program for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth. The program is for 16 and 17 year olds in the child welfare system and will be located at our 5 th Avenue location in St. Petersburg. Many of these youth have been thrown out of their family homes for disruptive behavior or simply because they have come out to their families as homosexual or transgendered. Unfortunately many of these youth end up becoming homeless with no safe place to live. As with our other transitional living and maternal group home programs, we will be focused on teaching life skills and preparing youth for independent living. When they turn 18, Family Resources will assist them in locating safe and stable housing in Family Resources-owned or scattered site apartments. An aftercare case manager will make home visits and will maintain contact for at least a year to provide support, referrals, advocacy and counseling to youth living in the community after leaving the transitional living facility. We are in the initial planning stages of implementing this program which will open with six beds. TOP Family Resources is pleased to announce a new program designed to reduce teen pregnancies, improve student academic achievement, educate youth about sexually transmitted infections and support healthy behaviors and positive life skills. The Teen Outreach Program; TOP is funded by a three year grant from the Family and Youth Services Bureau through the Department of Health and Human Services. The Federal Grant funds services in Pinellas and Manatee Counties. Family Resources is using an evidence based curriculum called TOP as the foundation for services which are targeted to at-risk teens ages The curriculum is delivered over a period of 25 weeks in Charter Schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, City Recreation Centers and other locations throughout the community. The Teen Outreach Program is currently recruiting local Agencies that serve foster care, juvenile justice, homeless, runaway and teens who identify with the LGBTQ Community for partnership opportunities. (Contact: Carol Jones RN, MA; Program Director or Kristin Poolman, Program Supervisor, Manatee County; for information about no-cost Community Partnerships). Researchers cite the extended length of the program, coupled with an additional 20 hours of Community Service Learning per club year, as key elements for program success. In addition, the structure of TOP enables skilled Facilitators to create safe, club-like atmospheres for youth to personally and collectively examine skills such as decision making, goal-setting, communication, conflict resolution and values clarification. Youth also spend multiple weeks on sexual development, teen pregnancy prevention and practical strategies to succeed in School and the work place. In June, the Teen Outreach Program wrapped up a 10 week pilot phase with end of the school year celebrations. As the summer clubs progress Top staff are preparing for full implementation in August and National Certification in the next year. 4
5 Magnitude In the Bay Area, the problems are daunting. We might not see it as we go about our day, but families here are struggling. Hundreds of young people are homeless and living on the streets. Over a thousand children are removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect each year. Economic hardship, substance abuse, mental illness and domestic violence affect many of our neighbors. Every Day, 125 Employees of Family Resources find Solutions packets of food and 1000 hygiene kits were distributed to homeless youth. 42 grandparents caring for their grandchildren attend groups and give emotional support to each other and give practical parenting tips and advice. Family Resources is proud to be certified by GreenNonprofits.org. We are doing our part to preserve our environment. Our accreditation by the Council on Accreditation (COA) attests that the highest standards of quality assurance are met in service provision to our clients. UR VISION is that O every child should be safe, that every troubled teen deserves help, and that every family torn apart by crisis be given the opportunity to heal. Members of Family Resources StreetSAFE team deliver food and clothes to those in need. Family Resources Programs Making a Difference Last week Stan Johnson took a bag of quarters and three homeless teenagers to the laundromat. While they were washing their clothes, he talked to them about their needs for jobs, food and shelter. Stacey Welton works with a young girl who has been in the foster care system for years. Stacey has to convince her that even though her mother has not been a responsible person, she should still work hard at school. Stacey tells her, You are valuable and you can be successful. Jeannie Willsie meets each week with groups of grandparents responsible for their grandchildren. Despite the legal, financial and physical challenges these seniors face, they tell Jeannie, I wouldn t have it any other way. Last week these 35 grandparents and their 60 grandchildren shared a potluck Thanksgiving dinner with each other. Kay Tillinghast has gotten to know two small children whose mother suffered abuse for many years. Kay helps these children learn to live lives with routines that include going to school, attending church and celebrating birthdays and holidays. Sally Bibby helped a homeless pregnant teenager become independent. This young mom recently passed a medical technologist training course, has found a job and is now looking for an apartment. 5
6 Hi-Lights Annual Open House at SafePlace2B Manatee December 7 th 2012 Pinellas programs participated in many community outreach events. October 6 th 2012 Manatee County Children s Summit serving over 5,000 kids. September 2012: Replacing of the entrance ramp at Manatee SafePlace2B, Eagle Scout Project provided by Dalton Hicks At their April 2nd meeting, the Top of the Bay Kiwanis Club presented Vince Renzi of Family Resources with a check for $ Their comment, Thanks again for all y'all do for the kids. 6
7 Youth Arts Corps Jane Harper asked our youth in the program to design a thank you gift to Southwest Airlines for the company's generous donation of 2 airline tickets to the Great Chefs event. We were very excited about this project. Rosy Scally Artist and Program Assistant at our Skyview location since 2010, led a group of youth through the creative process of a collaborative watercolor painting. The group set about deciding on color schemes, painting techniques, composition, perspective, design elements and message to create the finished product you see here. They wanted to incorporate the company's logo as central focus with an uplifting celebratory theme, hence the burst of colors. Khe'Monte Jones, Lorena Rossi, Trey Donald, and Mitchell Foran- Amato are the main students who worked on the painting. They all chose a different section to paint with the color assigned to them by the artist. The painting will be framed and sent to Southwest Airlines with a plaque accompany- ing it expressing gratitude from the agency. Our youth really enjoyed this project and handled it with innovation, excitement and professionalism. They always learn so much from the wonderfully talented Ms. Rosy in her classes and have fun doing it. We are proud to have their work on display and look forward to many more artistic assignments. Artists L-R- Mitchell & Khe' Monte Family Resources is a private, not-for-profit organization founded in 1970 dedicated to serving children, youth and families in the Tampa Bay area. Our Mission is to strengthen families and build better communities by providing prevention, support, and counseling services to children, teens and families. 7
