The officers and board wish our members the happiest of holidays and express our deepest gratitude to all our volunteers and donors for their help and financial support this past year.

2 NAMI North Coastal News Volume 15 No December 2015 President s Address By Mark Sensano NAMI North Coastal would like to wish everyone a joyful and happy holiday season. We have had a wonderful year and are excited as we look to Our board welcomed four new members this year. We provided eight Family-to-Family classes educating over 130 family members. Our In Our Own Voice program gave over 45 presentations to help stamp out the stigma of mental illness. We especially want to thank all of our supporters who stand with us as mental health advocates. Your dedication and donations make it possible Self-Care for the Holidays by Liz Kruidenier Who hasn t heard a flight attendant say at the beginning of each take off Put on your oxygen masks first if you are traveling with children. It stands to reason that in order to be a care giver one needs to be able to help. So what does that exactly mean? To a parent and/or a peer it means selfnurturing, according to Kelley Grimes, MSW of LEAP to Success. At a working breakfast at The Leichtag Foundation She described to us a story of failure, which she slowly turned around when she realized that the decisions she was making were not upbeat and hopeful. Instead they were contributing to her depression. Once she understood that one deep breath led to another, and brought her peace and joy, she started to mend. Instead of embracing stress she learned how to heal herself with laughter and joy. And then she couldn t wait to share her secret with others. As caretaker parents and peer support specialists we also have learned that we can for us to continue our battle against the stigma of mental illness. Happy holidays and may each of you have a wonderful New Year! guide those we love toward positive reinforcement one step at a time, especially during the holidays. At CHIP s Suicide Prevention Council meeting in November Stan Collins presented a similar subject: Taking Care of Ourselves in Service to Others. He even had worksheets for Emergency Self Care, Maintenance Self Care and Self Care Assessment. He defined Self Care as including any intentional actions taken to care for one s physical, mental and emotional health, such as activities and practices to reduce stress and maintain or enhance short or longer term well being. Also included was Compassion Fatigue, an extreme state of tension and preoccupation with suffering of those being helped which caused secondary trauma to the helper. He described self care as an essential social work survival skill for parents as well as professionals. And added that the key was in trying to achieve balance by often adopting such simple steps as eating the right food, exercising and sleeping enough, laughing, reading, meditating or going to a movie and achieving an equilibrium across one s personal and work lives.

3 NAMI North Coastal News Mariposa Open House By Dan Kasperick On November 19th, the Mariposa Clubhouse celebrated completion of the move to their new location at 2964 Oceanside Blvd., Suites E G in Oceanside off of Garrison. Visiting Celebrating Mariposa Clubhouse Open House dignitaries from NAMI, Jewish Family Services, Recovery International, Legal Aid, Casa Pacifica, Impact Young Adults and Mental Health Systems all attended. Mariposa Clubhouse Program Director Veronica Aguilar welcomed everyone and thanked all those members and staff who worked so hard to get the edifice clean and tidy. For days before the event, volunteers washed windows, vacuumed the carpet, swept and mopped the dining area and kitchen, prepared food and spruced up the place. On the big day, members took visitors on walking tours of the new building, highlighting our Latasha Whitecloud Memorial Community Room, Margy Probe Memorial Art Area, offices, computer depot, immense storage room and restroom facilities. Everyone chatted, caught up on what s been going on and extended thanks for being invited. At last the time came which everyone had been waiting for: Everyone in attendance ate as much pizza as they could stand, there being 25 pies all together, and still there was extra cold pizza for breakfast the next day. Overall, the celebration went great. It was a great time of camaraderie and catching up, the perfect induction into the holiday season for a new structure, a new outlook, a new sign and yet, the same care and concern given by all who call it their Mariposa Clubhouse Home.
