1 April 2017 VOLUME 16 NUMBER 4 S P E C I A L NAMI WALKS/ RUNS E D I T I O N NAMIWALKS CONTINUES TO STEP AWAY FROM STIGMA It s a disorder, not a decision, read one sign. I am not ashamed, proclaimed another. I miss you every day, one woman wrote on her sign. In a determined crowd of proud mental health walkers and activists, these brave declarations are nothing new. And yet you ll find that no two signs are the same maybe because each mental health experience is different. However, all messages, whether displayed on signs or carried around in hearts, all have a common thread: that mental health matters. NAMI San Diego is kicking off May is Mental Health Month by hosting the 14th Annual NAMIWalks/Runs San Diego County on Saturday morning, April 29, at NTC Park. You can register for this free event by visiting www. NAMIWalks.org/SanDiegoCounty. The NAMIWalk may take center stage as the main attraction, but the event also hosts an informative and illustrious NAMIWalks/Runs San Diego County HHSA Wellness Expo that showcases an array of mental health and wellness service providers in the San Diego County area. The comprehensive gathering of service providers includes everyone from Optum, San Diego Regional Center, and Care 1st, to UCSD Department of Psychiatry, Tri-City Medical, Sharp Mesa Vista, and much more. It s a great way to help educate and provide awareness for resources in the community, boasts NAMI San Diego CEO, Shannon Jaccard. The free resource fair is open to the public and runs from 7:30am until 11:30am at NTC Park. So whether you come to walk or run, peruse the resource fair, or to listen to the music and speeches, know that you will be greeted by thousands of people who are also on a mission for better mental health! MADISON DUCOTE VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT For the past year Madison Ducote has dedicated her time and heart to NAMI San Diego s mission by volunteering for the Family & Peer Support Helpline. I originally volunteered for college credit but I stayed because NAMI San Diego staff are amazing! I absolutely love helping people and knowing I m making a difference. NAMI San Diego is such an amazing program, I m so glad I found it, Madison says, reflecting on her volunteering experience. Madison s naturally bubbly and compassionate kindness radiates through the phone with everyone she speaks to. Her positive energy is refreshing to all NAMI San Diego staff, fellow volunteers and to all callers. In addition to Madison making a difference in other people s lives, volunteering has also made a difference in her life, Volunteering for the Helpline has changed the way I leave voic s. It has also helped with my anxiety. Being on the helpline forced me out of my comfort zone and helped me to overcome part of my anxiety. You gain so many skills and it s so rewarding. When Madison isn t changing the world one phone call at a time, she enjoys going to Disneyland or cuddling with her 3 pugs. In May, Madison is moving to Rhode Island. NAMI San Diego will miss Madison and are thankful for all she s done to improve the quality of life for everyone impacted by mental illness. NAMI San Diego wishes her the best of luck in her future endeavors! Interested in volunteering? To submit an application, please visit 2 NAMI SAN DIEGO

I dealt with severe bullying in middle school as the only Asian student in a predominantly Caucasian private middle school, which exacerbated my test anxiety, and triggered symptoms of depression following my ADD diagnosis. This led to suicidal ideation, and various other issues, that I am happy to say, are now mostly controlled. In order to maintain wellness, I eat a mainly plant-based diet, use natural remedies (such as essential oils), and maintain an exercise regimen that I change up every day for the sake of variety. Various coping skills like writing, reading and meditating, have also helped me control my symptoms. - Ali Fundraising Tips How to Raise $500 to help end stigma in only 7 days!! 4 NAMI SAN DIEGO Sponsor yourself first Ask 4 family members to sponsor you for $25 each Ask 5 coworkers to contribute $15 each Ask 4 friends to contribute $25 each Ask 5 neighbors to contribute $15 each Ask your boss for a company contribution of $50 Ask 3 businesses you frequent to donate $25 each $25 $100 $75 $100 $75 $50 $75 TOTAL=$500
