2 Welcome It is a pleasure to invite you to attend the International Symposium on Chemistry, Biology & Medicine, which will be held in Cyprus, an island of history and legends, that in the past 10,000 years has witnessed the heroics of many historical figures, including Alexander the Great, and the rise and fall of many civilizations. The symposium will feature lectures by several prestigious chemists from many parts of the world, who are coming together to celebrate Professor Nicolaou s 60th birthday. All of the participants in this symposium have been influenced by Professor Nicolaou s warmth and personal charm, his gifts as a student and teacher of organic chemistry, and his magnificent accomplishments in the fields of chemical synthesis and chemical biology. The program will include plenary lectures, major talks by guest speakers, and poster sessions. A scientific exhibition as well as cultural sightseeing and entertainment will also be available. This occasion will allow young scientists to meet established chemists and younger rising stars for stimulating discussions. The symposium will highlight a variety of emerging fields, covering fundamental concepts as well as novel applications. Posters will be showcased in a central location to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information. This exciting conference should encourage scientists to report their latest accomplishments in the form of poster presentations. Lunch will be in the same surroundings facilitating further opportunity for interactions. The Organizing Committee of the symposium encourages the establishment of contacts between academia and industry in a spirit of constructive globalization. We also invite you to enjoy Cyprus beaches, mountains, citrus groves, picturesque villages and excellent wine. The aim is to offer through the use of lectures and stimulating discussions a unique opportunity for an in-depth understanding of how industry leaders are using outsourcing to achieve high performance across their businesses. This business symposium will cover the strategies, best practices, success stories and future trends in outsourcing. Commercial exhibition: The commercial exhibition will form an integral part of the Symposium and will represent a unique opportunity for companies to present and promote their products to the large, highly qualified audience attending the meeting. It will be located centrally and

4 Preliminary program schedule: refreshment breaks will be held in the exhibition area to ensure a high level of attendance by the delegates. All information about the exhibition and sponsoring opportunities is available through the symposium secretariat. Poster communications: All delegates are invited to participate in the scientific program by submitting abstracts of scientific communications to be presented in the poster sessions. All submitted abstracts will be peer-reviewed for their acceptance. Participants wishing to contribute should submit their abstract via the online submission tool on the symposium website www. cbmcyprus06.com where a template for the abstract with further details is also available. Please note that registration is required to submit an abstract. Deadline for poster submission: February 28, 2006 Poster authors should confirm their registration by paying the registration fee prior to April 15, 2006, to ensure the inclusion of their poster in the final program and book of abstracts. Social program: The social program of CBM 06 includes the welcome reception on Sunday May 28th and the banquet on Thursday May 31st, celebrating Professor K.C. Nicolaou s 60th birthday. 6 Exhibition open Venue: The venue chosen for the symposium is the Elysium Beach Resort, a 5 star deluxe hotel, which offers leisure and business visitors to Cyprus an entirely unique experience. The Resort is located adjacent to the ancient Tombs of Kings in Paphos. The Elysium enjoys uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean Sea and has been sensitively designed in a palatial style primarily influenced by the Byzantine era. The cultural references of its architecture evoke the rich history of Cyprus and combine elements from Greek, Roman, Medieval and Venetian eras. Weather in Cyprus Cyprus enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with abundant sunshine year round. The average temperature in May is 26 C climbing to 30 C in June and as a rule, it hardly ever rains during the period of the symposium. Very light-weight summer clothing, possibly a long sleeved cotton top for the evenings is the most you will need to stay comfortably warm. This time of the year is already ideal for swimming and all beach/ water activities. Travel opportunities Post symposium tours to Athens, the Greek Islands, Egypt or Israel can also be arranged with the symposium secretariat. Accommodation: Accommodation is available at a range of hotels across Paphos, from 2 and 3 star hotels to luxury 5 star resorts as the Elysium. Transportation to the Elysium will be organized from the other hotels. We have reserved a block of rooms in each of the hotels. Cancellations: Substitutions may be made at any time, but please advise the Symposium Secretariat of a change of name. In case of cancellation prior to April 15, 2006, by written notice, registration fees will be refunded, less $125 processing charges. Unfortunately, after this date, no further refunds can be made. In the unlikely event that the Organizing Committee shall deem it necessary to cancel the symposium, all pre-paid registration fees will be reimbursed.
