2 Letter from the President LAPT June 2009 Dear LAPT Members and Friends of LAPT, HAPPY SUMMER!!! Wow, can you believe the summer is here already? For many, summer is a time for unwinding and taking it easy. Yet your LAPT Board remains relentless in working towards achieving the annual goals such as assembling the 2010 Annual Conference, meeting Gold Branch criteria, co-sponsoring workshops, and promoting play therapy in Louisiana. Furthermore, there have been changes among your board members. I was voted to be your President and Erin Dugan from New Orleans was voted to be your President-Elect. Your former president, Ann Landry from Lake Charles is now Past-President. Marcia Cox has been appointed to the new position of Gold Branch chair. Michelle Niemeier from New Orleans is the new Workshops & Conference chairperson. The Promotions & Publicity chair is now divided into two positions and Gerra Perkins from Natchitoches was appointed to the north chair and Nicole Bartlett of New Orleans was appointed to the south chair. This is an exciting time for LAPT with all of the new appointees. We are confident that they will employ their knowledge, experience, and passion for promoting and advancing play therapy to continue LAPT s evolution into a premier branch. LAPT would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to Marcie Yeager for serving on the LAPT board as the Workshops & Conferences chairperson for 4 years. Marcie s work has undoubtedly permanently enhanced LAPT s system for organizing conferences. Speaking of conferences, Paris Goodyear-Brown, LCSW, RPT-S will be the keynote speaker at our 2010 Annual Conference in New Orleans at Loyola University on February 26-27, She will present on Prescriptive Play Therapy for Anxiety Disorders. Paris has an international reputation as a dynamic and original speaker. If techniques are what you want, you definitely will enjoy Paris presentation. The second day of the conference will offer participants numerous sectionals to choose from. We are currently calling for proposals for sectional presenters for the second day of the conference. LAPT is thrilled to co-sponsor a workshop with the Family Counseling Center of Ruston on Filial and Play Therapy: A Team Approach to working with Traumatized Children and Families on Friday, July 24, 2009 from 8:00am to 4:30pm. 3 Congratulations to all LAPT members!!! LAPT has achieved the required criteria to earn the distinct honor of Gold Branch!!! Your LAPT board has worked hard to meet all of these requirements. Special recognition goes to Marcia Cox, for her tireless efforts and for her diligence in paying close attention to details and keeping the board on track in meeting the stringent provisions to secure the Gold Branch Award. In closing, I would like to offer a few reminders. (1) LAPT continues its Membership Drive. Each of you can help to spread the word about Play Therapy by talking with your colleagues and encouraging them to attend our Annual Conference and join LAPT. (2) The 2009 APT Annual Conference will be in Atlanta, Georgia on October Save by registering online at before September 3 rd and print your workshop handouts in advance. (3) George Bernard Shaw once said We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. So with this in mind, keep playing with the enthusiasm of 8 year old deep in imagination and keep spreading your zeal for play therapy. 7 Meet an LAPT Board Member My name is: Kristy Brumfield What I do for the board: Newsletter & Website Why and when I joined the board: I was the only non-board member at the 2007 General Meeting and I guess they liked me enough to keep me around! I became semi-official at the 2008 Conference, a little more official that following July with the start of a new LAPT year, and still more official with my first newsletter publication in November. I guess the final step will be figuring out the website! J I play at (where I work and what I do for fun): Xavier University of Louisiana and Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans (Seton Center for Child and Adolescent Development). For fun I spend time with friends, read, swim, listen to music, and feed my conference travel addiction as much as possible. Where I learned to play (school/trainings): University of New Orleans + Center for Play Therapy Summer Institute and Intensive Supervision + numerous other conferences, workshops, and trainings. Why play therapy: It just makes sense! My favorite play therapy book (why?): Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship by Garry Landreth (It just makes sense!) My favorite children s book: by Laura Joffe Numeroff My favorite play therapy technique: Child Centered Play Therapy My favorite play therapy quote: You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation. --Plato

Why play? Play is a child's natural form of communication just as talking is an adult's natural way of communication. Children, even children who are quite talkative, express themselves more fully through their play. Emotions are often difficult to understand for children and even more difficult to express. Play provides a non-threatening way for children to express themselves.
