DRUMBEAT November & December 2014 Just another day at the office.not quite! Friday 26 th September may have started off as a normal day for DRUM but it soon turned into a very special and amazing day for us. Jamie Hooper, and his wife Viv, presented DRUM with a donation towards the refurbishment project at Parkgate Community Centre. After visiting DRUM a couple of months earlier, Jamie had chosen DRUM to receive a donation of 20,000 from the Bert and Sarah Hooper Trust, set up by his father Les Hooper. Les Hooper The Bert and Sarah Hooper Trust was set up by Les Hooper, in memory of his parents. Jamie Hooper Bert Hooper married Sarah Aston and they opened a greengrocers shop in School Lane, Bushey. Les was born above his parent s grocery shop in Les attended Merry Hill Infants School and later Ashfield Junior School but left aged just 13 to help his father, when many of the staff were conscripted for the Second World War. At the age of 17, Les volunteered for the Royal Navy before running his own haulage company, with just one lorry, after the war. Les married his wife of 60 years, Joyce Groom, and the couple went on to have three children - Jamie, David and Sarah. Les and Joyce took over Bert s caravan business, in School Lane, in The couple grew the business and expanded it to 11 locations between Eastbourne and Northampton. Jamie had also joined the family business and Southern Caravans became one of the largest caravan businesses in South-East England. For eight years of his life Les had cared for Joyce, after she became ill, and so gradually started to wind down the businesses. Jamie continued to work out of School Lane with the commercial side of the business, Southern Mobile, who provided temporary toilets to events such as Princess Di and the Queen Mother's funerals. When Jamie decided to sell up and go in a different direction, Les sold the family's premises in School Lane and set up the Bert and Sarah Hooper Trust with some of the proceeds. As well as serving on the Watford Rural District Council for three years and an active member of the Kings Langley Probus Club, Les was a founder member of the Bushey Rotary Club and remained so for over 40 years. Les was given a prestigious award by Rotary International shortly before his death, in February 2011, in recognition of his service and efforts to help the community over the years. Words cannot express just how grateful we are to the Hooper family. Their donation will enable DRUM to carry out work to the art room and the main hall, which will help us improve and extend services to our members, their carers and the wider community.
Funding It costs approximately 100,000 a year to run DRUM and this figure would be even higher if not for all the hard work and extra hours put in by our amazing part time staff, tutors and volunteers. This does not include the running of our centre and the refurbishment. DRUM receives some funding from Hertfordshire County Council, Health & Community Services, which we use towards the staff salaries however, we still have to raise 50,000 a year ourselves to keep services at the current level. We do this through membership fees, small grant applications, donations and fundraising - so please do support our forthcoming fundraising events, buy a pack of DRUM Christmas cards and the new DRUM calendar! Halloween at DRUM Many thanks to our wonderful staff and volunteers for arranging the Halloween party. Many thanks to everyone that came along. We raised 200 and everyone had a great time! Volunteers Required We require volunteers to accompany our members to Asda and help them with their shopping on a Thursday afternoon. The DRUM minibus leaves the centre at about 1pm on a Thursday and returns to the centre before 3pm. We are well aware that parking is (and has always been) an issue at Parkgate Community Centre but we have recently received a notice about not parking in the flats opposite. The parking bays (at the rear of the flats) are for residents only and parking tickets may be issued if you use the bays. Donations Required for Christmas Fair Raffle Prizes Bottles of Wine & Spirits Christmas Crafts Unwanted Gifts Please bring in your donations by Tuesday 18 th November
St George s Day Charity Club A huge thank you to the St George s Day Charity Club who donated 500 to DRUM. The charity supports individuals and groups in the local area by raising money and funding projects such as The Peace Hospice, New Hope Trust, Street Angels, Herts Air Ambulance, individuals, groups and organisations that have specific needs. The charity is supported by some of Watford's leading businessmen and women and has donated a staggering 150,000 to worthy causes. A huge thank you to the Royal Masonic Lodge of St Albans who donated 250 to DRUM to staff at The Halifax who raised 715 for DRUM, which will be matched by Lloyds doubling the amount! Dragons Apprentice Challenge 2014/15 The Dragon s Apprentice Challenge provides a platform linking students from schools and colleges with local businesses and local charities. The Dragon s Apprentice Challenge offers Year 12 students the opportunity to experience setting up and running a business, gaining organisational and job related skills and learning about the work and beneficiaries of their designated charity. Teams of young people are matched with a local business mentor (their dragon) and a local charity. Their challenge is to turn 100 into 1,000+ for their designated charity. This is the third year that DRUM has taken part in the Dragons Apprentice challenge, organised by the Watford and Three Rivers Trust. In the first year, Team Innovation (from Queens School) raised over 5,000 for DRUM with the help of their Dragon, Alan Brooks from CLEMENTS. For the 2013/14 challenge DRUM was paired with Team Oracle (Rickmansworth School) and their Dragon s were Sean Mahon from Travis Perkins and Peter Neighbour from Home Instead Care. Team Oracle raised just over 1,600 for DRUM. For this year s challenge DRUM has been paired with Team Omega from Queens School and their Dragon is Ben Hughes from the Halifax, Watford Branch. Good luck Team Omega!

The Care Act is the biggest change in social care legislation in England since the formation of the NHS nearly 70 years ago, with wide-reaching implications for carers and carers services. The majority of the Care Act will come into force in April 2015, with the remainder in April So what do carers stand to gain from this new law? The Act strengthens the rights and recognition of carers in the social care system including, for the first time, giving carers a clear entitlement to receive services. In the current system local authorities weren t required by law to provide support to carers. Now if a carer is eligible for support for particular needs, they will have a legal right to receive support for those needs, just like the people they care for. It will also put a limit on the amount anyone will have to pay towards the costs of their care. Community Wellbeing - Preventative Services Review Service User and Carer Surgery at DRUM Tuesday 18 th November, 10am-12pm Hertfordshire County Council and the NHS are committed to providing a range of preventative and wellbeing services that help local people improve their health and stay well and independent for longer. They need to make sure that the services they fund are best meeting the needs of the community. We have arranged a service user and carer surgery at DRUM, so that they can hear what matters most to our members and their carers/families. The service that we will be discussing is carers breaks. This is your chance to put across your needs and views on future services, so please join us on Tuesday 18 th November at 10am, at the DRUM Centre. Refreshments will be provided. Please contact the DRUM office if you do not usually attend on a Tuesday and require transport. Tel: or drumwatford@btinternet.com The flu vaccine is offered free of charge on the NHS to people who are at risk to ensure that they are protected against catching flu and developing serious complications. You are eligible to receive a free flu jab if you: are 65 years of age or over have certain medical conditions are living in residential care or other long-stay care facility receive a carer's allowance or are a main carer Every winter, the vast majority of unpaid carers miss out on a free flu vaccination, despite the fact that they re entitled to request one from their GP if they re the main carer for someone who s ill or disabled and whose health would be at risk if they fell ill. Flu vaccination clinics have already started so don t miss out and contact your GP now!

Yoga Yoga includes physical exercise but it is also a lifestyle practice for which exercise is just one component. Training your mind, body and breath, as well as connecting with your spirituality, are the main goals of the yoga lifestyle. Yoga can increase flexibility, improve mobility and is perfect to help manage stress and anxiety. Funded by Hertfordshire Music Service Figure Modelling Workshop with Peter Salmon This will be a new course at DRUM, targeted at members that have always wanted to be able to model a full figure, but have been daunted by the prospect or lacked the confidence. You will study the proportions of the body breaking down the anatomy and treating the body as a functional machine, simplifying the muscle groups of the human form. First you will learn how to build an aluminium armature, fifteen inches or so tall. Modelling clay is then applied to the armature and once the figure has been produced to satisfaction, you will add character to the figure. The workshops will be limited to just five students. Each workshop will run for approximately 6 weeks the dates are still to be confirmed. Sessions will be 2 hours, 10.30am-12.30pm per session Please let Sarah know if you are interested in doing a workshop.
Parkgate Refurbishment The second phase of the toilet refurbishment is nearly complete, providing another two new toilets next to the art room, one of which is wheelchair accessible. A huge thank you to Lee (LMD Plumbing & Drainage), Travis Perkins Rickmansworth Branch, Décor Tiles, CLEMENTS and AnySkips for their continued support with the refurbishment project. The next phase of our project will be to increase the size of the art room, across the corridor and installing double doors in to the main hall.
