2 LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Since our founding in 1995 with the sale of Retreat Hospital, the Jenkins Foundation has remained committed to its mission of improving the health of Greater Richmond. While this report is a snapshot of our activity in 2016, it also reflects cumulative successes and lessons learned over many years. With a focus on increasing access to care for the underserved, we are pleased to renew our multiyear support of five key safety net providers with a proven track record of delivering effective programming and positive health outcomes for their clients. We also celebrate the longawaited development of The Healing Place for Women. The first installment of a 1 million grant to CARITAS begins to address a critical gap for women in need of recovery services, but also builds on our long-term investment in The Healing Place for Men dating back to its planning phase in At that time, the Jenkins Foundation was instrumental in bringing The Healing Place model to Richmond to support longer-term recovery programming. Our work would not be possible without a strong and growing network of nonprofit partners, peer funders and community stakeholders. Together, we are monitoring trends and best practices, responding to urgent needs and developing innovative approaches to address health disparities in our region. 3 Grant Spotlight The Jenkins Foundation s continuing commitment to improving the health and wellness of our community is visible through a range of grants that allow our nonprofit partners to pursue their ambitious goals. Here are just a few notable efforts: CHILDREN S MUSEUM OF RICHMOND The Eat Play Grow program funded by the Jenkins Foundation incorporates art, music, movement and literacy into family lessons. Over 317 children and caregivers received healthy meals and wellness programming through this initiative offered through the Children s Museum of Richmond. GOOCHLAND FREE CLINIC & FAMILY SERVICES The Jenkins Foundation has partnered with Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services since the clinic s inception in It is the only health resource in this rural community for low-income uninsured adults. Funded programs lead to lower risk of death, pain relief and restored smiles. CROSSOVER MINISTRY With continued support from the Jenkins Foundation, CrossOver Ministry has made an immeasurable impact on the health and wellness of Greater Richmond. Providing a full continuum of health care services, CrossOver offers preventative strategies that instill hope and provide patients with the tools needed to lead healthy, productive lives.

4 CARITAS Forward-Thinking Approach to Healing Jenkins Foundation commits 1 million to The Healing Place for Women The Jenkins Foundation envisions a community in which all residents have access to the health care they need to lead safe, healthy and productive lives. This includes an ongoing commitment to substance use recovery and treatment services for vulnerable men and women in the Richmond region. After learning about a promising model in Louisville in 2000, the Foundation s Board of Directors knew they needed a seat at the table to bring a similar long-term recovery program to Richmond. In 2003, the Jenkins Foundation committed a lead gift of 1 million to support The Healing Place for Men, a program of CARITAS, with the hope of building a foundation for a complementary program for women. Today, The Healing Place has helped more than 10,000 men find a path to recovery, while acting as a catalyst to revitalize the Manchester neighborhood where the facility is located. With the emergence of the opioid epidemic, meeting the growing demand for recovery services in our community has been a challenge, especially for women, for whom there are fewer treatment options. Currently, there are an estimated 10,800 Richmond-area women in need of treatment for illicit drug use. The Jenkins Foundation understands how difficult it is to serve the most challenging health issues facing our community but have faith that it is possible. KAREN STANLEY, CARITAS CEO This past year, the Jenkins Foundation was the first to commit another 1 million to support the creation of The Healing Place for Women, a cornerstone program of the new CARITAS Center opening in early

5 2019. This 120,000-square-foot warehouse on Stockton Street will house recovery services and housing for women, as well as CARITAS administrative offices and workforce development programs. The Jenkins Foundation consistently gives bravely and boldly, said CARITAS CEO Karen Stanley. They understand how difficult it is to serve the most challenging health issues facing our community, but have faith that it is possible. The CARITAS Center will provide innovative best practices to address homelessness and substance abuse for women in our community who need it most. 6 Grant Priorities The Jenkins Foundation is committed to expanding access to communitybased services through programs and organizations that have the potential to make a significant impact on the quality of health in our region, especially for uninsured, underserved or vulnerable populations. The Foundation s funding priorities fall under two focus areas: ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE SERVICES The Foundation s primary goal is to support access to the following: Health education & prevention services Mental health care Oral health care Primary care KEY COMMUNITY HEALTH ISSUES The Foundation seeks to reduce risky behaviors and promote safe and healthy environments by supporting: Substance abuse treatment and prevention Unintended pregnancy prevention Violence prevention In addition, the Foundation is committed to the long-term viability of the organizations it supports, and will consider capacity-building grants that strengthen an agency s ability to better serve its clients. The Foundation will also consider a limited number of proposals outside the above-stated focus areas.
