3 OVERVIEW OF HULL SERVICES Hull Services offers an integrated continuum of prevention, intervention and treatment programs in addition to professional training services and workshops in Calgary and beyond. Through these programs and services Hull provides effective behavioural and mental health treatment and support for thousands of children and their families on an annual basis. WHY WE EXIST Hull aims to create the conditions in society where children and their families are free from behavioural and mental health challenges. We work with children who have often experienced trauma in the form of sexual abuse, physical abuse and neglect. Hull offers them and their families an opportunity to seek health and happiness with a focus on mental health. What guides our work every day is a belief in the dignity, wellness and worth of all. This combined with a commitment to integrity, collaboration, trust and accountability. Simply put, we care. And we want you to care too. Our founder, and continuing inspiration, William Roper Hull, was an entrepreneur, visionary and philanthropist. His contributions to Calgary, the province of Alberta and Western Canada left a blueprint of good citizenship for legions of others to emulate. In 1883 he said of Calgary, There will be a city of at least 25,000. I see houses, schools, shops and churches and everything one needs for a happy life and I will help to build it. In 2016 we continue to strive toward the highest of ideals while remaining steadfast in the belief that every child, every family, matters.

4 George Ghitan Executive Director, Hull Services I am honoured to present the 2016 Hull Services Annual Report. As you undoubtedly have already noticed this Annual Report is unlike any other we have ever published. Created in graphic novel form this departure from stylistic convention allows for a bright light to be shined on the dark corners of childhood trauma in a way no professional, or stack of academic reports, ever could. Taking a graphic novel approach provides Callie, a 15-year-old girl, the opportunity to share with readers in unflinching detail the disturbing realities of her troubled life. Unfortunately Callie represents the stories of many of the thousands of children Hull Services comes in contact with every year. Children who have been traumatized through physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. By having Callie tell her story Hull Services aims to bring further attention to the topic of childhood trauma and the very tangible prevention, intervention and treatment solutions we have to offer. Hull Services is responding to abuse and neglect in our community but we can t do it alone. We require your support to help thousands of children, kids just like Callie. Join us so all children can enjoy the prospect of a brighter future. George Ghitan Executive Director, Hull Services

5 Harold Chornoboy Chair of the Board of Governors Hull Services has for more than 50 years stood up for children in our community. Today the organization is responding to what I believe is the most important public health issue of our day; the one in five children who face a mental health challenge. And please allow me to be crystal clear about what I m talking about: children who often have been traumatized because of physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. Children who without the prevention, intervention and treatment Hull Services offers will continue on a trajectory toward adulthood marked by misery in the form of homelessness, addictions and other significant problems. Ignoring our children s mental health is tantamount to putting 20 per cent of our kids on an ice floe to be left to their own devices. Add up the social and financial costs and it s simply just too high a risk to take. I believe as a community we are at a critical nexus in our history. Ignoring the problem I have laid out would predictably see thousands of our fellow citizens failing to reach their potential and result in the devouring of finite resources such as health care, the courts, police and social services in unprecedented and unsustainable terms. Conversely, responding to this crisis means supporting Hull Services as a leading children s mental health organization positioned to make a positive impact on these serious circumstances. Hull Services has the experience and expertise to help Calgary s most vulnerable children [and their families] so they can share in the same opportunities as all of us. At the end of the day these children and families want what we all want; to live in a community with the conditions where they too can strive toward a brighter future free from the scourge of abuse. Please support Hull Services to address this public health crisis. Your community; and thousands of children are counting on it. Harold Chornoboy Chair of the Board of Governors

6 ABOUT CALLIE Callie is a 15-year-old who in many ways is a typical Calgary kid. She is fashion conscious, loves to longboard and is exploring a budding interest in photography. She is however someone who early in life experienced serious emotional trauma and loss due to the premature death of her father in an industrial accident when she was 10-years-old. She is angry at her mother Sarah for her father s death but rationally she understands it wasn t her fault. Callie is also increasingly angry with her mother who is now living with her new boyfriend Paul and pregnant with their first child. Callie is a teenager who is self-harming by cutting her arms with a razor blade. She increasingly thinks about dying and is actively planning to commit suicide. Callie also has a secret she has been keeping from her mom
