1 PILLAR of HOPE Spring 2017 In This Issue Upcoming Events 5 - SATP Success Story 7 - North Port Ribbon Cutting Board of Directors OFFICERS Graci McGillicuddy Chair Veronica Miller Vice Chair Anne Garlington Secretary Millard Martin, CPA Treasurer BOARD AT LARGE Beverly Bartner Aimee Cogan Jill Levine Karen Valentino Dr. Walter Lambert Medical Director Suzanne Takerian Chief Financial Officer Doug Staley Executive Director Welcome to the spring edition of our newsletter. We have lots of successes to share with you from our Pillar of Hope Open House, Men, Whiskey, & Watches Sarasota, the unveiling of our Platinum Pathway of Hope bricks, the ribbon cutting of our new North Port facility, to the release of our 2016 Annual Report. We have been busy and there is so much more to come with Blue Ties and Butterflies on April 19th, 2017 at Michael s on East and Men, Whiskey, Watches Venice on May 18th, 2017 at the Suncoast Air Center. These events not only raise awareness but also much needed funds that support CPC s five core programs. CPC knows that it cannot be successful without the support of a caring and giving community. CPC thanks everyone that has attended these events and in doing so became part of our together that makes for children and families impacted by child abuse every single day. I would like to highlight CPC s Personal Safety and Community Awareness Program (PSCA). PSCA offers a holistic approach to the prevention of child abuse by promoting greater community awareness and providing primary child abuse prevention education to children, their caregivers, professionals who interact with children, and the community at large. Workshops are designed to introduce children to basic personal safety information, promote pro-social behaviors and teach self-protective skills, all of which reduce a child s vulnerability to abuse and exploitation. Strategies to effectively respond to threats of physical or sexual abuse, abduction, bullying, harassment, or dangers online are taught during lessons. Our PSCA staff has achieved new heights in clients served and workshops presented in From October February 2017 PSCA served 43,067 individuals. This is more than the program served all of last year (30,263.) Prevention is so important that we are looking to expand our PSCA staff next fiscal year to be able to reach even more people. PSCA strives to create a future in which children are empowered and educated and adults are equipped and aware, and our community is a safer place for children and families through our services and programs. Why is prevention so important? Prevention is one of the keys steps necessary in reducing child abuse in a community and CPC takes that role seriously. Thank you for supporting CPC and helping us to achieve our goals. Together We Make a Difference, cpcsarasota.org Douglas S. Staley, MSW Executive Director

4 special events CPC s event season has kicked off with a bang! We developed a new look and feel to our Pillar of Hope Open House. On a beautiful December night, almost 400 attendees gathered at the Phillippi Estate to enjoy our Men Whiskey & Watches. With beautiful décor and great entertainment, the table was set for a spectacular evening! The whiskey, cigars and food were top notch! With the help of a powerful message and our live auction, we were able to raise the Men Whiskey & Watches revenue by almost 36 percent. of With new decor and theme of it takes a village, we were able to share the importance of us coming together to protect our children. More than 300 guests attended and had the opportunity to tour our facility. By doing this, our Pillar Of Hope revenue rose by 48 percent! It was the perfect kick off to our event season. 5 This success story is about a 6-year-old little girl who came to the CPC for therapy to overcome the emotional and behavioral trauma she was experiencing after enduring physical abuse by her mother. When she began therapy treatment, she was angry and aggressive when she could not be in control. Additionally, her sense of self-worth and self-esteem had been eroded, and she blamed herself for the abuse. Her progress was slow but steady as she dealt with several additional stressors such as an abrupt change in placements, the possibility of seeing the abuser and thoughts of suicide. sexual abuse treatment program Through her continued efforts in therapy, she could successfully complete all her treatment goals and reduce her trauma symptoms. In therapy, she learned safe and appropriate ways for expressing her feelings. By creating and sharing her trauma narrative, she successfully processed the experience and impact of her abuse. She ultimately was able to say that she was stronger and wiser for the difficulties she had been through and the hard work she had put in to overcome her trauma. By the end of her treatment she did not exhibit the emotional and aggressive behaviors that were displayed when she first came to CPC. She was no longer angry and she knew what happened to her was not her fault! 5
6 platinum pathway of hope On February 23rd, 2017 the Child Protection Center (CPC) unveiled our Platinum Pathway of Hope. The Pathway s border contained seventy two bricks representing individuals, couples and foundations that have consistently supported CPC. These CPC Ambassadors helped to clear the path for our clients and provided CPC a blueprint for success. Without your support as ambassadors, we don t have this building we don t have our staff, we don t have the scope of services we have today. You are the literal foundation to our Pathway of Hope and Healing for our clients. You are part of our Together when I say Together We Make a Difference for our clients. These are not just some words on a wall but rather they are our actions that reinforce the belief that is truly only when we work together that we will be able to affect change. Lives are changed because of you! On behalf of the children and families we serve, CPC says thank you! Platinum Pathway to Hope Event Photos by: Cliff Roles 6 Child protection center cpcsarasota.org
7 north port ribbon cutting The Child Protection Center (CPC) held a ribbon cutting ceremony at our new North Port office located at 2530 Bobcat Village Center Road, North Port, Fl The recently renovated facility provides just over 2900 square feet of office space. CPC s Management Team and Board of Directors has been monitoring the growth in South Sarasota County over the last couple of years and this location provided enough space to meet the growing demands for services in North Port. CPC is providing individual, family and group counseling services to verified victims of physical and sexual abuse at this location. Additionally, the Child Protection Team is conducting Forensic Interviews and medical exams for the Department of Children and Families and law enforcement. We are excited that we will be able to better serve our south county clients and meet their needs with our expanded space. Ribbon Cutting Photos by: Wise Choice Photography 7
