3 Pathways to Hope: Shaping a Positive Future in Uncertain Times Everything is changing the economy, politics, healthcare, technology. And changes aren t just happening around us. They are also happening within us. Socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically each of us is changing. How can you choose the best path to a successful future when the tides of uncertainty are continually shifting the ground beneath your feet? Design your own pathway for a life well lived, with a strong foundation anchored by hope. NAMI Southwestern Pennsylvania s 13th Annual Education Conference is designed to empower each participant whether someone living with mental illness, a family member or a treatment professional to shape his or her own future by following an individual journey based on hope, courage and recovery. Through the inspirational stories of ordinary people who have achieved extraordinary accomplishments during challenging circumstances, conference attendees will be motivated to draw strength from one another and act on dreams for a positive future. For those living with mental illness and their loved ones, change should be embraced, not feared. The nation s behavioral health system is changing, thanks to a strong grassroots movement of consumer and family advocacy. Innovative brain research is leading to new treatments for mental illness. The collective voice of the behavioral health community is eradicating stigma by increasing awareness through education and understanding. The changes that occur through recovery lead to pathways that bring new experiences, improved relationships and opportunities to give hope to others. You have the power to choose your own path, to determine the kind of future you want to live. NAMI Southwestern Pennsylvania s 13th Annual Education Conference will highlight individuals who have found a pathway to hope for their own lives, so that we all can find the resources, support and hope to sustain us during uncertain times. Who Should Attend Consumers of mental health services and family members; mental health professionals; educators; local community leaders; and regional, county and state government leaders in Southwestern Pennsylvania. 5 Conference Presentations* Morning Keynote Address How SAMHSA Supports Recovery and Gives Hope to Families Jean Bennett, RN, MSN, MSM, PhD, Regional Administrator of SAMHSA Region III in Philadelphia, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) For families seeking a pathway to recovery from mental illness, understanding how to successfully navigate the nation s behavioral health system is crucial to improving health and quality of life. Unfortunately, people with mental and substance use disorders, because of their illness, often are excluded from the current health care system. In 2012, approximately 20 million people who needed substance abuse treatment did not receive it, and an estimated 10.6 million adults reported an unmet need for mental health services. Recognizing this need, organizations are partnering with consumers and families on their pathway to recovery. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has been providing leadership and devoting its resources toward reducing the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on communities for more than 20 years. SAMHSA champions the message that behavioral health is essential for health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people recover from mental health and substance use disorders. The organization works diligently to target effective substance abuse and mental health services to the people most in need and to translate research in these areas, as well as to encourage continued improvements in the delivery and financing of prevention, treatment and recovery support services. Organizations like SAMHSA advocate for those in recovery and their families, providing hope and direction to needed resources. Morning Plenary Session My Hike to Recovery: Forging a Trail of Hope Tracy Carney, Director, Recovery Central Clubhouse, Bloomsburg, PA In an uplifting story of redemption and healing, Tracy Carney recalls her experience hiking 171 miles of the Appalachian Trail and how this journey parallels the journey she took from mental illness to wellness. After years of trying to cope with multiple diagnoses, dozens of medication cocktails and traveling the odyssey of revolving door-hospitalizations, Tracy had lost her job, her hope, her freedom and her cherished relationships. But, through her spiritual beliefs, support from her husband and a new job opportunity at her local drop-in center, Tracy was introduced to the world of recovery and began to re-engage in life. To reclaim the confidence and hope she had lost, Tracy joined a friend on a three-week backpacking trip along a portion of the Appalachian Trail. Her inspirational story includes reflections of the hike and how the choices and challenges she faced during the trip relate to similar choices and challenges she has experienced throughout her recovery. To date, Tracy has hiked more than 1,000 miles of the Appalachian Trail, with a goal to complete all 2,181 miles by her 60th birthday. Luncheon Address The Secret Agent L Project Responding to Mental Illness with Hope and Healing Laura Miller, Founder, The Secret Agent L Project; Member, NAMI Southwestern Pennsylvania Board of Directors Laura Miller grew up in a home where mental illness was present, and learning to cope through the emotional challenges of understanding and living with her mother s mental illness has shaped the narrative of her life. Laura invested significant time in educating herself on mental illness: what it is; how it presents itself; and how it can be managed. Recognizing the importance of talking about her personal experiences, she found creative outlets to express her emotions related to being a child of a parent with severe mental illness. Social media became a lifeline for Laura as she discovered this new medium for connecting with others, leading to the creation of The Secret Agent L Project, which began in July 2009 with a single act of kindness that has blossomed into an international phenomenon. Today, The Secret Agent L Project has become an outlet for people to deal with mental illness in a positive and healing way by demonstrating to unsuspecting individuals that they are genuinely cared for and not alone.

6 Afternoon Keynote Address A Case for Hope Borderline Personality Disorder: The Good Prognosis Diagnosis Marie-Paule de Valdivia, MBA, MSW, Past Clinician Intern at Yale Psychiatric Hospital, Board Member and Family Connections/Teleconnections Facilitator NEA BPD NAMI Southwestern Pennsylvania Annual Membership Meeting Charma D. Dudley, PhD, FPPR, Associate Director of Behavioral Health Services, Value Behavioral Health of Pennsylvania; President, NAMI Southwestern Pennsylvania Board of Directors Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is more prevalent than we think, more difficult to live with than we imagine, yet more hopeful in its outcomes than we realize. A serious mental illness that centers on the inability to regulate emotions, BPD is characterized by intense anger, chaotic relationships and impulsivity. The estimated 14 million adults with BPD struggle with symptoms that include suicide attempts, cooccurring disorders, shame and feelings of emptiness. There is, however, great hope for recovery for those who are accurately diagnosed, and effective treatments provide a significant reduction in symptoms for nearly 80 percent of those with BPD. Marie-Paule de Valdivia will share information about this still misunderstood mental illness, the importance of an accurate diagnosis, effective treatments utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and the value of family education through organizations like the National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder (NEA-PBD) and NAMI. Marie-Paule will also reveal how, through the challenge of confronting her daughter s BPD and seeking a pathway to recovery for her family, she embraced a tide of change in her own life, allowing it to carry her forward into a new career. *Biographical information on our speakers and workshop presenters can be found on our website: Workshops, 2:30 pm 3:45 pm 1. Radical Acceptance for Families Affected by BPD: The Balance Between Acceptance and Change, and the Secret Ingredient in Moving Forward Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is currently the beststudied and most effective intervention for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD.) DBT first targets the reduction of life-threatening and other uncontrolled behaviors, including the inability to regulate extreme emotions, and then teaches a variety of self-regulation skills to manage strong feelings and impulsive urges. The skills taught to help family members be more supportive are rooted in DBT and are proven to be effective in helping families reduce their feelings of burden, grief and stress. One of these skills, radical acceptance, is so central that it is part of both the therapy and the family skill set. This workshop will explore why and how radical acceptance is a key first step toward making lasting, positive life changes. Through examples and metaphors, participants will explore the choices we all have in the face of extreme suffering and gain an understanding of what radical acceptance really means, including how it can be the only pathway to hope and growth. The program will conclude with an exercise of practicing the skill of radical acceptance, mindfully, together. PRESENTER: Marie-Paule de Valdivia, MBA, MSW, Past Clinician Intern at Yale Psychiatric Hospital, Board Member and Family Connections/Teleconnections Facilitator NEA BPD 2. Ask the Doctor Mental health consumers and family members often have many questions that can t be quickly answered in a short doctor s visit. Do you have questions about: Medications and their side effects? The symptoms of different mental illnesses? Issues related to co-occurring disorders? How to make better lifestyle choices? During this workshop, Dr. Mathos will answer participants wide variety of questions concerning mental illness while discussing effective treatments and supports that promote recovery and healthier living. PRESENTER: Kimberly K. Mathos, DO, MPH, Board Certified Child and Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist.

7 3. What Can I Do if My Loved One is Arrested? This workshop will focus on how to navigate the criminal justice system from point of arrest to reentry from county/ state correctional institutions. The presentation will provide information on the criminal justice process and the services offered by Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Office of Behavioral Health, Justice Related Services. In addition, attendees will receive contact information for the jail and courts that they can utilize should a loved one be arrested in Allegheny County. PRESENTER: Michael R. Nock, Program Manager of Justice Related Services, Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Offi ce of Behavioral Health. PRESENTER: Stacy Tekely, Supervisor of Justice Related Support and State Support Services, Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Offi ce of Behavioral Health. 6. Understanding Hoarding Hoarding is a complex mental disorder that goes far beyond the accumulation of clutter. There are many reasons as to why people acquire and are unable to discard possessions that appear to others as useless or having limited value. This workshop will provide a comprehensive definition of hoarding. Participants will learn the various levels and types of cluttering and hoarding problems and will gain an understanding of the common thought processes of those who hoard. The workshop presenter will provide some answers and resources to help hoarders and their families. PRESENTER: Adele Maher, MSW, LSW, private practitioner offering individual, family and group therapy specializing in adult ADHD, OCD and Hoarding. 4. Revealing Your Recovery Story Everyone who is touched by mental illness has a story to tell. The goal of this workshop is to inspire and empower participants to gain the courage to talk about their experiences with mental illness, particularly through story-telling and narrative building. By sharing her own story, presenter Laura Miller will encourage others to continually believe in hope and recovery, and to recognize the value of sharing their personal stories with others. Participants will learn techniques such as journaling, story-writing and other creative outlets that will help them to focus on and further process their own experiences with mental illness, as well as to understand the community aspect of the disease, and how revealing their stories to others promotes healing. PRESENTER: Laura Miller, Founder, The Secret Agent L Project; Member, NAMI Southwestern Pennsylvania Board of Directors 5. Coping with Anxiety and Panic Attacks This workshop presentation will focus on anxiety disorders and panic disorder. The manifestations of these illnesses will be covered, as well as the burden they can cause on people living with the disorder and family members. A discussion of treatment will also occur, including both medication treatment as well as psychotherapy. The most effective treatments will be emphasized, as often less effective treatments are used.
