9 Some Facts Of all Black fourth-graders in the nation, 58 percent are functionally illiterate In some cities, 80 percent of African American boys drop out before finishing high school Every day, 1,000 Black children are arrested Nearly 7 percent of Black babies are born to girls under the age of 18 1 in every 8 African-American males age is incarcerated The number one cause of death for African-American boys is homicide * Statistics courtesy of Essence Cares (Objectives) 9

10 We re losing our youth to poor literacy to staggering school dropout rates to violence to teen pregnancy to HIV/AIDS to drug & alcohol abuse to gang activity to the correctional system to brutality at the hands of one another 10

12 The National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM) About NCMM: A Nationwide Mentoring Movement Founded by Susan Taylor Participants: Partner organizations: The National Urban League, 100 Black Men of America, the YWCA, The Links, Incorporated A coalition of other organizations: city and state government, churches, community groups, etc. Committed and concerned individuals Vision: A call to action for every able Black adult to mentor a vulnerable young adult in our community 12

13 NCMM Objectives Recruit 1 million mentors Increase the literacy rate Increase HS school grad. 10% annually Help youth enroll in 2 & 4 year colleges End the cycles of academic and spiritual disengagement, violence and incarceration 13
