5 Chicken Meat Meal The meat from chicken is dried - this pasteurizing process removes moisture and concentrates the nutrients. The result is a highly digestible form of protein, moderate amounts of quality fats, and a rich source of calcium, phosphorous and minerals. Good nutrition is essential to the quality of life For an individual or a family, selecting a pet food is an important step, second only to deciding the type of animal that best fits their personality and lifestyle. Once the decision has been made, the pet s food may well have the single greatest impact on their health, overall well-being and ultimately the pet owner s peace of mind. All living organisms are made up of complex bio-molecules, which in turn, are derived from food. These bio-molecules, plus individual elements such as calcium, phosphorous, nitrogen, oxygen, etc. make up the nutrients required to sustain life in the form of food. Obligate carnivores, like cats, and remnant carnivores, like dogs, have unique nutritional requirements. Carnivores require in excess of 60 known nutrients. For simplicity, nutritionists divide these into major categories, like proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water. PROTEINS Proteins are complex biological molecules made up of individual building blocks called amino acids. Amino acids are organic compounds built on a carbon-hydrogen backbone, and a distinctive nitrogen amino group. There are 20 nutritional amino acids, and from these 20 amino acids thousands of different proteins are made each with a specific and predefined function, for example, the collagen found in joints or insulin for proper sugar utilization. The carnivore, like all mammals, requires that ten of these amino acids, the so called essential amino acids be provided on a daily basis from its food. These essential amino acids must be supplied daily in the diet because the animal is not capable of producing them in adequate quantities relative to their need. These essential amino acids are found most abundantly and in the correct proportions to the carnivore s nutritional requirement in foods made from other animal proteins. Excellent ingredient sources of essential amino acids and whole proteins for carnivores are chicken, chicken meat meal, chicken liver, eggs and fish. Dried Egg Eggs are considered the perfect balance of amino acids, fatty acids, phospholipids, and an ideal amount of vitamins and minerals. Dried egg is an ideal complement to the advanced nutrition of today s pet. Fish Meal Highly digestible fish meal tends to have the highest concentration of omega 3 fatty acids. Fish meal also represents a very concentrated form of high quality protein, and nutritionally available minerals. 6 Chicken Fat Chicken fat adds great taste and texture to pet food and is a rich source of the essential fatty acid linoleate. Dogs just love chicken fat. Ground Barley Barley is a hardy and nutritious grain and contains a relatively high amount of protein and fibre. This soluble fibre slows the rate of digestion of food. Dried Beet Pulp Dried beet pulp is the fibre remaining after sugar has been removed from sugar beets. The pulp has been shown to be one of the most effective fermentable fibre sources in the diet of the dog for the promotion of hindgut health, consistent bowel movements and firm stools. Water Essential to life, water accounts for between 60 to 70 percent of an adult dog s body weight. Pets need to have good quality water available at all times. A 10% loss of body water can cause serious problems. FATS Fats are required daily as a primary source of energy. Like proteins, fats are made up of individual building blocks. In this case they are called fatty acids. Examples of fatty acids include linolenic acid and arachadonic acid. These particular fatty acids are also known as Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, respectively and they are utilized by the body, among other things, to help keep the skin supple and the hair coat thick and soft. Without the proper types, levels and ratios of fatty acids, the skin and coat will become dry and brittle which may open the animal to infections, external parasites, or other diseases. High quality ingredients rich in these essential fatty acids (especially the essential omega 6 fatty acid linoleic acid) are chicken and chicken fat. Some premium grade foods also contain flax seed and fish oils which are rich sources of the omega 3 fatty acids. CARBOHYDRATES Carbohydrates can be broken into two broad groups Starches and Fibres. The starches can provide metabolic energy (glucose) and can serve as a complement to the energy supplied by proteins and fats. It is important that starches are well cooked to assure they are digested in the stomach. Starch is also the key component for development of the crunchy texture and shape preferred by most dogs and cats. Quality ingredients providing starch are grains like rice, barley, and spelt. The more complex carbohydrates are most often described as fibre. Fibre is classically considered to provide bulk and stool consistency. This comes about from its relative indigestibility in the stomach and it s ability to tie-up large amounts of water. Quality nutritional fibre sources are also known to benefit the health of the large intestine (colon) by promoting fermentation. Ingredient sources of fibre range from the outside coating on grains such as rice (rice bran), and oats (oat bran), to tubers (like beet pulp), and many common fruits & vegetables (like tomato pomace) to name but a few.
