Meli F. and Penton V: f"1 FATTY ACIDS IN THE BLOOD SERUM OF CALVES FROM BIRTH TO WEANING Gas-chromatographic research (Institute of Special Pathology and Veterinary Medicine of the University of Messina) In five calves of the Frisian breed the behaviour of the fatty acids of the blood serum was studied from birth to weaning by means of gas-chromatography in the gaseous phase. During the first week of life the animals were fed by the mothers; at the beginning of the second week they were moved to separate stalls and fed artificially with a mechanical wet-nurse regulated in such a way that each calf could suck about 2.5 liters of milk at each feeding. At the same time whole compound feed and hay of alfalfa were placed at their disposal. The blood samples (in all nine were taken for each animal at the rate of one a week) were always taken between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. after the animals had received their first ration of milk. The fatty acids were extracted from the serum using the method of DE PASQUALE. The methyl esters were separated by means of a Carlo

4 2 Erba gas chromatograph serial 200 mod. GV with flame ionization detectors and a stainless steel double column (2 m x 2 mm inner 0) filled with 20% EAS on silanized chromosorb mesh. The conditions of separation were the following: temperature of columns C increase 5 C/mi initial isotherm 5' temperature of detector 300 o C temperature of injectors 270 C carrier gas N 1.35 kg/c 2 equal to 2 50 ml/min. combustible gas H 0.5 kg/c 2 equal to 11 ml/min. combustible 2 gas air 1.5 kg/c 2 equal to 340 ml/min. inlet pressure 100 outlet pressure 16 bottom of graph scale 2.5 mv speed of paper 1/5 inch/min. The gas-chromatographic separation revealed the constant presence of 32 fatty acids; in some samples up to 35 fatty acids were found due to the appearance of acids not constantly present. Of these fatty acids 20 were identified (C 6 C 7' C 8 C 9 C 10 C 11 C 12 C 13' C 14' C 15' anteiso C 15' C 16' iso C 17' anteiso C 17' C 17' C 18 iso C 18' C 18 iso C20). The unidentified fatty acids are indicated by an X and numbered progressively from 1 to 12. On the graph the pdsition of the unidentified acids was the following: X precedes C 6 1 X 2 between C 6 and C 7' X 3 between C 7 and C 8' X 4 between C 8 and C 9' X5 and X 6 between C 9 and C 10' X 7 and X 8 between C 10 and C 11' X 9 between C 11 and C 12' X 10 and X 11 between C 12 and C 13' X 12 between C 16 and anteiso C 17. In many cases between C 10 and C 11' as well as between C 12 and C 13' one acid appeared instead of two. X 1 X3' X 4 and X 9' in some samples were accompanied by the appearance of one or two unidentifeed acids

Ir. 3 From the examination of the results which for the sake of brevity we are not reporting in this note we found that among the fatty acids identified C 7 C 8 C 9 and C 10 underwent increasing variations between the beginning and the end of the experiment. In particular C 8 descended from a basic mean value of % to 1.142% at the 4th sample and then gradually rose again to % at the 9th sample. In the course of the research the C 11' C 12 C 14' C 15' iso C 16' iso C 18 and iso C 20 diminished. In this group the most consistent decreases were observed for C 11' C 14' iso C 18 and iso C20. The fatty acids C 13 iso C 14 anteiso C 15 C 18 and anteiso C 20 varied considerably showing increases and decreases but returning at the end of the experiment to values quite close to those of the 1st sample taken. C 6 C 16 C17 andc18 7.showed inconsistent variations. Among the unidentified fatty acids we found a constant increase in X 4 which rose from a mean percentage value of 1.4% in the first sample taken to one of % in the 9th sample taken. X 5' showed a tendency to increase and X 6 (decrease. X 12 of which the mean percentage value in the first sample taken was 5.20% rose to 9.058% in the 3rd sample after which it gradually decreased until it dropped to 0.32 in the 9th sample taken. These results show that in calves between birth and weaning there is a modification in the percentage of fatty acids of the serum which generally consists in an increase in fatty acids with a lower number of C atoms (particularly C 8 and X4 this latter appearing between C8

6 4 and C 9 ) and in a decrease which is more or less marked in those with a larger number of C atoms (in addition to those identified and listed previously there is the X 12 which appears between C 16 and anteiso C 17 ). The results of our research lead us to suppose that the modifications we observed during the first 75 days of the life of the calves are a physiological phenomenon due either to the type of feed or to the progressive development of the rumen which permits the use of foods other than milk even if only partially In later researches we shall attempt to verify this hypothesis. SUMMARY RÉSUMÉ Les acides gras dans le sérum de sang des z7caux de lait après la naissance jusqu'au sevrage. Dans les 12 acides gras ne pas identifiés on a régistré l'augmentation de X (cet acide dans les diagramme se trouve parmi C et C9) et la diminution de X u (qui se trouve parci CI et anteisoc u).
