f/f 4/ 0. 7y7 1. A short study concerning some hitherto unknown ;marine animals. \O'.L (Dedicated. to the most beloved Father, venerated even beyond the grave. to BERNHARill/ CHRISTIAN OTTO: Doctor of Philcsophy and Medicine, formerly full Professor of the said sciences at the University of Frankfurt, presently Honorary and Emeritus Professor of the afore-mentioned University, memiber of the Physiographic Association of Lund, Member of the Nature Reasearchers of Berlin, and Halle, also member of the Lssociation of Physics of Erlangen, and so forth. written with affectionate sentiments on the occasion of celebrating the most joyful day of the llth of May, 1821, the fiftieth anniversary of that memorable day, when he was vested with the honours of Doctorate, by his son, AdolphrWilliam OTTO. cuta.d:4",n, Doctor of Medicine and Chirurgy, full Professor of the said sciences, Director of the Royal Institution of Anatomy, member of several Associations of Letters.
2. BRATISLAV,iA. (formerly Pozzsony, in Hungary, known also as Pressburg, (in 1821.) Printeed in the type of the said University. 0- The forward.. Very ceten you urged me Most beloved Father, out of those anirmalcules, which I collected on the British and Italian s3ea-shores daring my trips made there, in the years of and 1819, and which I brought with me, to select sonale new species, and make a description of them. I wo-ul-d have gladly complied at an earlier date with your reczuest, should I not have been so much tied, up with anoth_er kind of business, that I could spend only my spare tim6- Cù1 Natural History. That is why these lines I present to you today, are somewhat- unprepared, as they -! are in an unfinished and incomplete presentation,.perhaps I should thus not yet impart thum to you, for fear of inviting your severe criticism in respect of such kind of matter, and by.this, supposing that perhaps another time I could expose the same material with more accuracy and more species,- haw. much 1 wish to do indeed'
3. For there àre some omitted from here, which if produced, I would be in a better position to congratulate you, an indefatiguable Nature Researcher for half a century, with a more polchshed, more scholarly and extensively made study, I wish to impart to you now, some new species, nevertheless. Moreover, this paper aims at only one thing, that is, to give me an opportunity to extend to you, Most beloved Father, some merriment on this most fortunate day of today,. in demonstrating my most affectionate and grateful sentiments to you. I wish therefore to you a serene and a very long old age, with all vigor in body end soul, which you are enjoying today, and may you keep the same ability unchanged yet for many, many years to come. I cannot indeed, wish for myself anything more, than that, should God' preserve for mê such a most solemn day, as is now yours, and then, may I look back all over my past life with the same tranquility of souly. and liveliness of spirit, as you do today. Farewell:
Genus, Caaligus, Muell, speciees. Caligus minimus, by me. The cargpacce is convex, not quite orbicular, emarginated at the frront part between the eyes, ai the posterior it is crescentt shgped, beset with inwardly bent margin, ciliated; shorrt antannae, acuminated, divided into three segments; the eyes closely adopt the color of the body, are prominent, witth rounded labrums (operculum) capable of shutting and cclosing up; the mouth is situated between the forelegs furni:ished with a rcsstrum, there are eight pairs of legs; the fi:-rst set is very short, uncinated (beset with barbs at the end); the second pair is very long, terminated with setae, o-vertopping the margin of the carapace; the third pair is shorter than the second set, beset with a puffed up (tirnescent) penultimate segment, having the Éhape of a pincer, which in the males is much Ilrger than in the females, the last segment is very much uncinated; the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh pairs of legs are similar to those seen on oarfobted animals; the el.gth 41)air is feeble, long and supine, terminated by a straight apex; the abdomen of the female is larger, not quite square, below dotted by six spots, in the male it is less orbicular, the egg carrying
5. appendages are pedunculated, they are very short, hardly longer than the eauda; not quite cylindrical in shape; the cauda in the middle part is compressed, and rounded at the rear, ornated with a twin, folea- ' eeous appendage, not quite egg-shaped; each of them is provided with four pinnal setae. They measure about two lineas in length, showing some dull darkness in hue. I found this species adhered to the palate of the PERCA LABRAX at Nice. 24. Species. Caligus heptatils) by me. - Convex carp, pace, cordated, divided into three parts by two lengthwise running sutures, the middle part is not quite square, and the lateral ones are angustate, ald at the rear a,re prominent; the marging, of the carapace is sharply edged, and, if I am not mistaken, they are not 'bearing any kinidof hair-like growth; the eyes are prominent, approximal; very small tentacles, divided into three pilose (covered with hair) segments; the rostrum is long and aeuleate (armed with a sting), with a pair of spines situated down at the sides; seven pairs of legs; the first pair is very short inwardly bent, provided with a spicule,
6. ornated by fine barbs, the second pair is longer, hardly reaching the margin of the carapace, armed by two claws; the third pair is very-thick, armed with one claw'only, covered with leaf-like thin plates (Foliaceus), grown in irregular sequence, lobated, beset with setae; segmented abdomen, divided into four parts; on the third segment of the female individual, on the dorsum of same, are two foliaceous appendages, the males have none; the fourth pair is very large; they are divided on the dorsum into two equal lateral parts by a lengthwise running suture; in the male species these are not square, in the females they are elongated, and three-leaved at the rear end, the female has below two inwardly curved genital processes; six string-like egg carrying appendages, which are longer than the body itself, three are glued, aslit were, on each side. I found this species at Nice, on the fins of the SQUALUS Griseus, and I suspect that this species is identical --- with the one which the celebrated Risso took for Caligus -- productus
