Is it?

10/17 Bell Ringer Case Study Page 464 & 3 questions

Today some of us jumped out of bed and immediately made it up neatly. Some of us browsed several social media sites for hours. Some of us finished up homework at the last minute or skipped the homework altogether. Some of us snacked on fresh fruit instead of packaged junk food. What motivated these behaviors? Motivation is a fascinating culmination of forces: what you want and what you need. Sometimes your biology motivates you to act, but sometimes your brain overrides basic biology. For example, you might be naturally terrified to jump from an

When researchers refer to lying, they don't include the mindless pleasantries or polite equivocations we offer each other in passing, such as "I'm fine, thanks" or "No trouble at all." An official lie actually misleads, deliberately conveying a false impression. So complimenting a friend's awful haircut or telling a creditor that the check is in the mail both qualify.)

Most of us receive conflicting messages about lying. We're socialized from the time we can speak to believe that it's always better to tell the truth, in reality society often encourages and even rewards deception. Show up late for an early morning meeting at work -- "You're punished far more than you would be if you lie and say you were stuck in traffic"

Normalcy the condition of being normal; the state of being usual, typical, or expected.

Social Norms Shaking hands, eye contact, leaving a tip, religion Characteristics of the targeted person Men / Women Crying, Dress, etc. Context Paranoia

In this unit you will learn about various psychological disorders. Someone's behaviors and thought processes are only considered disordered if they meet all three of these criteria: - distressful to the person exhibiting them - dysfunctional to the point of disrupting the person's life - deviant from what is standard in the person's culture

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders aka DSM-5 ~1950s Strive to be objective (observable, reliably report on, agree ) List of Symptoms

Defining & Classifying Mental Disorders >>Dangers of labeling anyone with a mental health disorder. >>If someone is diagnosed with a disorder, it can change the way the person thinks about himself and it can change the way others think about him. But treatment plans usually only make sense after a diagnosis, so diagnosis is often necessary.

Can you remember the last time that you felt anxious? Anxiety is a mixture of fear, apprehension, and worry. In most people's lives, anxiety occurs in response to a rational fear: job interview you aren't prepared for a big test you move away from home for the first time A person with an anxiety disorder experiences anxiety for an extended period of time in response to an irrational fear or for no reason at all.

Anxiety disorders typically- last for at least six months are characterized by a disproportionate fear response relative to the actual danger posed produce maladaptive behaviors in an effort to avoid the anxiety-producing situation.

To be considered an anxiety disorder, the anxiety must meet all three of the criteria discussed on the previous page: distressful to the person exhibiting them deviant from what is standard in the person's culture dysfunctional to the point of disrupting the person's life

Anxiety Disorders General state of dread or uneasiness a person feels in response to real or imagined danger. **Anxiety disorder is out of proportion to the situation provoking it. ***Anxiety disorders are the most common type of mental disorders in the US.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Before 2013, the DSM also classified Posttraumatic Stress Disorder as a type of Anxiety Disorder. Now PTSD has its own category. PTSD is a disorder characterized by haunting memories, nightmares, social withdrawal, anxiety, and/or insomnia that lingers for four weeks or more after a traumatic experience. It may include irritable or aggressive behavior, self-destructive behavior, re-experiencing, avoidance/numbing, and arousal. Children or adults who experience trauma may be impacted. Thousands of veterans of the Vietnam War and other wars exhibit these symptoms.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Before 2013, the DSM classified Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder as a type of Anxiety Disorder, but now obsessive-compulsive disorders are classified separately. People with obsessive-compulsive disorders experience obsessions (persistent, unwanted thoughts) that lead to compulsions (actions that must be performed). Common obsessions include fear of germs, interest in symmetry, and aggressive thoughts toward self or others. Common compulsions include counting, cleaning or hand washing, rearranging to achieve perfect symmetry, double-checking to be sure things are locked or off. Hoarding, hair-pulling, and skin-picking also fall in this category.

PTSD Before 2013, the DSM also classified Posttraumatic Stress Disorder as a type of Anxiety Disorder. Now PTSD has its own category.
