3 BACKGROUND TO CHILDREN S OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICE LOCATIONS Platt Bridge Health Centre Rivington Avenue Platt Bridge Wigan WN2 5NG Tel No: Main Administration Number Therapy Office Platt Bridge clinic is the main base for the Children s Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Service. The clinic is both an administration and treatment base for the service for community patients. Therapists work out of a number of other locations, including: Hope School Kelvin Grove Marus Bridge Wigan WN3 6SP Tel : (Therapy office ) Hope school has over 200 pupils all with severe learning difficulties; the majority of the children are mobile, some with challenging behaviour problems and some with more evident physical difficulties. The school has an integrated nursery with mainstream and special needs children together. It also has a Further Education Unit for years old and young adult unit for The school has a hydrotherapy pool. There is a fortnightly orthotic clinic within school. Leigh Health Centre The Avenue Leigh WN7 1HR Tel No: Children s Reception: Staff Office: Leigh Health Centre has a Children s Services Department and different groups, clinics and individual therapy appointments are run from this base, including; Child Development Groups, Gait Clinic and Baby Clinic. 3
4 WORK AREAS: The community therapy service works within three main team areas; Special Schools: Hope School Complex and Severe Learning Difficulties (PMLD). Oakfield School - Moderate and Severe learning difficulties (11-19) Rowan Tree School - Moderate and severe learning difficulties(3 11) FE Colleges at Hope School and Oakfield Community Caseload - referrals from Paediatric and Orthopaedic Consultants, other Hospitals, GP s, Health Visitors and other Therapists. A variety of cases are seen including: Congenital Condition Clinics Community based Clinics Cystic Fibrosis Clinics ASD Clinics DCD Clinics Therapists see children 0-19 year olds in a variety of settings including clinics, nurseries, schools and home environment. MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH: There is close liaison with Speech and Language Therapists, Paediatric Consultants and Education Staff. 4
5 PROFILE OF CHILDREN S OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICE SPECIAL SCHOOLS Therapists work within the special schools on a part-time basis, along with therapy assistants. Each therapist is responsible for the delivery of therapy to Junior and Senior pupils. Lower school therapy is often delivered within the classroom, with close liaison with Education staff. Classroom management also includes standing and special seating programmes encouraging an overall postural management programme. Senior school therapy sessions are organised within the pupil s timetable, including standing and special seating sessions. Hydrotherapy sessions are also timetabled and provided on a priority basis. Each therapist inputs into the assessment and provision of Orthotics, in liaison with the Orthotist, during the weekly/fortnightly orthotic clinics. Also, for the referral and recommendation of specialised wheelchairs/buggies to the appropriate wheelchair provider. Therapists are also responsible for organising assessment of specialist seating and standing equipment with company Rep s, in liaison with education staff. Therapists also liaise with education staff and speech and language therapists, with company rep s to provide switch access for computers, communicators and electric wheelchairs. The therapists also liaise with the pupil s parents and carers. EARLY YEARS TEAM Platt Bridge Clinic / Leigh Health Centre Team members include Development Support Workers, Development Support Worker Assistants, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Speech and Language therapists, Therapy Assistants, Specialist Health Visitor and Consultant Paediatrician. The children have a wide range of conditions, resulting in difficulties in one or more areas of their development. The therapists will assess any child attending the Child Development Team who is referred to them, to establish their specific needs. Not all children attending the Child Development Team will require therapy intervention. The therapists will liaise with the children's families and other members of the Child Development Team, to advise on and demonstrate specific management programmes of play, positioning and activities to help the children maximise their movement skills and encourage good posture. The therapists also liaise with the orthotist for children who require specialist splinting, with the wheelchair service for the provision of specialist supportive pushchairs for children who require them and with seating company representatives/social services for the provision of appropriate specialist seating if postural support is required. 5
6 CYSTIC FIBROSIS CLINIC There are Cystic Fibrosis clinics at Thomas Linacre Centre that have physiotherapy input. The physiotherapist is responsible for reviewing and updating the patients home physiotherapy programmes and teaching the use of equipment. Follow up home visits are arranged after clinics to review the patients in their own homes where the need arises. The Physiotherapist is also involved in the child's annual reviews, including exercise tolerance testing. COMMUNITY CASELOAD Therapists are responsible for organising appointments to assess children in their own home, school or within the Paediatric Departments, as appropriate. Each therapist has a Community caseload. Therapists liaise with other services involved with the child and are responsible for keeping the referring source up to date with the child s progress. Children up to the age of 16 are seen for a variety of presentations. Treatment is can be carried out by an integrated therapy assistant. CLINICS Musculoskeletal Service: A variety of musculoskeletal conditions are managed across Platt Bridge and Leigh Health Centre bases. Orthopaedic: Therapists can be involved with patients for post operative management which may include hydrotherapy. Orthotic: Physiotherapists are involved in discussions with the Paediatric Orthotist for the prescription and provision of orthotics. Community based clinics are held in various locations across the trust. These clinics mainly cater for children with minor/mild orthopaedic conditions, gait anomalies and congenital conditions. Splinting: Occupational Therapy led service providing functional splinting. Tone Management/Lycra: Specialist clinic led by tone management team. 6

9 FIRST DAY OF CLINICAL PLACEMENT LOCATION: As placement is allocated please ring or at least a week prior to the start of your placement to find out exact location and start time. START TIME: To be arranged with your clinical educator NB: If you are going to be late or are sick, please phone your allocated base/ educator by 8.30am. REPORT TO: On arrival report to school or Platt Bridge reception and sign-in. Report to the Therapy Department and to your clinical educator UNIFORM: Physiotherapy: A uniform of polo shirts / tunics and blue trousers or casual but tidy mufti can be worn. Tracksuit (shorts in summer) and trainers are appropriate. Please ensure that your shoulders are covered so no strappy tops. Please wear an identity badge. Occupational Therapy: Uniform should be worn including tunic or polo shirts, green or black trousers and flat black shoes. Please wear an identity badge. LOCATIONS OF PLACEMENT: A placement within community paediatrics will involve working in a variety of settings in the trust. You will be informed of your individual placement prior to commencing. Specific interest visits can be organised at your request, whenever possible. SECURITY: Please wear your student identity badge at all times. There are locker facilities available only at Platt Bridge Clinic. Please ensure you are advised by the staff with whom you are working regarding the security of your personal belongings. ACCOMMODATION: There is no accommodation available for this placement area. 9

11 LUNCH ARRANGEMENTS HOPE SCHOOL: There are no canteen facilities for staff on site. There are sandwich shops within walking distance or within a few minutes drive of each school. We provide our own tea and coffee and organise milk between staff. There is a fridge within all of the schools. PLATT BRIDGE: There are no canteen facilities on site. There are sandwich and general shops within reasonable walking distance and driving distance of the clinic. We provide our own tea and coffee and organise milk between staff. There is a fridge and microwave within the clinic for staff use. LEIGH HEALTH CENTRE: There are no canteen facilities on site but there is a small shop in the hospital which serves limited snacks and sandwiches.
