2 What time do I start? 08:30 Frequently Asked Questions Where do I go? For all three sites please meet at physiotherapy reception. For specific directions and how to get to the hospital visit our website: Click on getting to hospital and then choose which hospital you want. You should find a map of each site and directions to the hospital. What uniform should I wear? Black shoes, blue trousers, shirt polo top or white tunic. Must have a badge and single stud earings. Who is my educator? Contact the clinician student link for your specific educator. Details should be on your university website under placements. Please be aware if you are ing that the link clinician may be on annual leave or busy to answer s so follow it up with a phone call. What pre reading should I read? Revisit your university lecture notes on the specific placement. Contact the clinician student link for the area for more specific reading material. Is there any where to get lunch? There is a canteen on all three sites with other snack shops around. Is there a microwave and fridge? Each site has a staff room with a microwave, fridge and kettle which you can use. What if I m sick on the first day? Please contact physiotherapy reception and leave your name, the area you are due to work and your educator s name. Please also state how long you might be off. Contact your educator later that day to update them on your return. Also contact your university. Leicester Royal Infirmary reception: Leicester General hospital: Glenfield Hospital: Is there any cash points on site? Cash points on each site. Is there any parking available? Parking on site is either a permit or pay and display. For parking visit the hospital website for specific car parks. It might be worth paying for the first day and then asking around for where free parking is.

3 LEICESTER ROYAL INFIRMARY Oncology and Haematology CLINICAN LINK PERSON: Lucy Payne Balmoral OT dept 4082 The service covers the in-patient wards of the Cancer Service, these include: 2 Oncology wards, Haematology ward, Bone Marrow Transplant unit and the Teenage and Young Adult Cancer unit. We see patients at all stages of their cancer journey; providing rehab following treatment, and managing a patients physical deterioration by enabling patients to maintain their independence. Rehabilitation in Cancer Care, Robb et al 2008 Cancer Research website Macmillan website Hands, Burns and Plastics CLINICAN LINK PERSON: Helen Tunstall helen.tunstall@uhl-tr.nhs.uk You will have time daily on the burns and plastics wards where you will be expected to manage a caseload of patients with burns and soft tissue injuries and following plastic surgery. You will also have an outpatients caseload which will mainly consist of patients with hand injuries. There will be chances to visit various clinics and assist in our hand rehab class. 4 Ward 24 Inpatient/acute neurology CLINICAN LINK PERSON: Steve Fay Brain Injuries Unit - LGH 4056 / Steve.fay@uhl-tr.nhs.uk Ward 24 is the acute admissions ward for neurology patients in UHL. It is a fast paced ward, with a mixture of neurological conditions and medical patients. Key skills: time management, prioritisation, delegation and MDT working Reading around neurological conditions such as: Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain Barre syndrome, Acquired brain injury (sub dural haemorrhage, sub arachnoid haemorrhage), ataxia. Paediatrics Naomi Dunmore Naomi.A.Dunmore@uhl-tr.nhs.uk -Paediatric Outpatients: managing a caseload of patients from 0-16 years with musculoskeletal problems i.e. knee pain, hypermobility, upper limb and lower limb fractures. The paediatric team also specialise in treating patients with chronic pain, birthing injuries and respiratory conditions which you will get the opportunity to shadow on your placement. We also run hydrotherapy and lower limb gym class sessions which you will be involved with. -Paediatric Inpatients: working with children from 0-18 years of age within the Childrens Hospital. The paediatric team cover all specialities including respiratory, neurology, oncology and orthopaedics. 5 A&E and Acute Medicine Raj Pothini/ Kowshik Pirakala The acute medicine team covers 11 wards in two buildings Balmoral and Windsor. There is also cover for the A&E with a forty five minute response standard for Physiotherapy. Referrals can be done verbally, electronically via ICM and Bleep system from the nursing and medical staff. Response times for routine referrals is within 24 hours Aims of the Service: To prevent unnecessary admission into the hospital To expedite safe discharges from A&E and AMU Where possible the team will aim to support a patient s return home, however where further assessment or rehabilitation is required we will try to access appropriate services. 6 Outpatients Jane Hunt na A spacious outpatient department has 12 treatment cubicles in the main outpatient area and further treatment cubicles within the hands, burns and plastics team area. There is a large gymnasium used for individual patient treatments and for class rehabilitation. There is a selection of electrotherapy machines, including ultrasound, pulsed shortwave, interferential and TENs and a traction bed. Maitland Vertebral and Peripheral Manipulation. Womens Health Clare Crow and Claire White Postnatal in patients (sometimes antenatal in patients). Antenatal MSK outpatients (individual and class treatments), and postnatal outpatients. Anything you can find about pregnancy, labour, antenatal and postnatal MSK problems, and pelvic floor dysfunction. LEICESTER GENERAL HOSPITAL Elective Orthopaedics Martin Hughes/ Renata Bove You will be working across 4 elective orthopaedic wards providing post-operative rehabilitation to a range of conditions from major joint replacements of hips/knees, spinal surgery to minor foot and hand surgery. It would advantageous to review bone and soft tissue healing. Have a awareness of some types of orthopaedic surgery and also general post surgical complications. We have a student pack set up if you would like to contact before your placement starts that can be ed to you.

8 Outpatients Sue Haynes /4070 na Working area is within Physiotherapy OPD. You will treat patients in the depart. Also work in the gym with groups, involved with and taking class rehab sessions. Also gain experience in hydrotherapy. Examples of conditions you are most likely to see are osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis. Post operative orthopaedic surgery ; Total knee and hip replacements, arthroscopy knee surgery, meniscectomy, anterior cruciate repair, shoulder surgery ; subacromial decompression. soft tissue trauma ; i.e joint sprains and fractures. Other musculoskeletal conditions ; adhesive capsulitis, shoulder impingement, mechanical back and neck problems and anterior knee pain. We suggest you read around to gain a basic understanding of the above. Also healing times for bone and soft tissue, and basics of ex progression. 9 Neurology out-patients and the Younger Disabled Unit (YDU) Helen King Leicester General Hospital 4076 na In both clinical areas you will be assessing and treating adults with a neurological deficit. This may include the following diagnoses: Multiple Sclerosis; Parkinsons Disease; Muscular Dystrophy; Cerebral Palsy; Traumatic Brain Injury; Spinal Cord Injury; Falls and Ataxia for example. The YDU is an eight bedded multi-disciplinary rehabilitation unit. There may be the opportunity to provide hydrotherapy to this client group. Communicating with other professionals is part of multi-disciplinary working and expected in these clinical areas. Revise anatomy and read your lecture notes on neurology. Read your preferred text book on neurology; have an awareness of the pathology of some neurological conditions. Bring any interesting research papers for discussion.

10 GENFIELD HOSPITAL Respiratory Medicine and ITU CLINICAL LINK PERSON: Helen Turner/Clare Rossall Respiratory Medicine Wards, HDU and ITU, for patients with acute and chronic lung disease. Rehab in gym setting is for patients post ITU or exercise tolerance, or general mobility for any patients on the cardiorespiratory wards.
