6 Summer Dissertation Abstract Consumer Embarrassment A Meta-Analytic Review and Experimental Examination of Embarrassment Expected defense March 2019 This dissertation proposal consists of two essays and discuss the influence of embarrassment on consumers as well as their subsequent behavioral responses. Research indicates that embarrassment leads consumers to make irrational choices and to avoidance behaviors that are deleterious to their personal health. An understanding of the response strategies to embarrassment can have significant positive impacts on research, public policy, and marketing decisions intended to improve consumer well-being. The meta-analysis conducted in the first essay aims to develop a model that integrates the distinct responses to embarrassment by compiling substantial contributions to the field and to test this model empirically. In the second essay, the influence of embarrassing situations on neutral observers of the situation is investigated. The extant literature suggests that a consumer who commits a social transgression will experience embarrassment if real or imagined others are present to witness the transgression. However, the embarrassment experienced by those observers lacks a theoretical account, since observers have committed no transgression and are not the subject of appraisal by others. We label this phenomenon observer embarrassment, and introduce perspective taking as the underlying process that leads to observer embarrassment.
