1 2018 Postgraduate Training in Narrative Therapy Collaborating on Narrative Responses to Trauma: Addressing the Consequences of Abuse and Adversity Thursday 1 and Friday 2 March 9.00am to 4.30pm The stories people tell themselves and others about traumatic events do affect how they live their present and future lives. While the actual events and their effects can be helpfully explored, a narrative approach also seeks to bring forth and richly describe people s responses to traumas. Often these responses have been, and still may be, of value to the person. Typically, these response stories are undeveloped or completely invisible. Keeping this in mind, participants in this workshop will consider how we might collaborate on storylines that understand and acknowledge people s responses to trauma. We will consider how to: Assist people to tell the unsaid stories: noticing details and asking helpful questions about them Identify and name resistance to traumatic events: thoughts, feelings or actions taken that reduced the negative effects at the time and/or later Relate to traumatic incidents from a safe place outside the trauma story Bring forth a valued sense of self in spite of the effects of trauma We will also think about: How we might bring these constructive responses to trauma, the actual incident/s, and the effects of trauma, into a fuller storied life The politics of trauma: social and cultural power and powerlessness Evolving therapeutic relationships over time This practical and interactive workshop will explore the importance of asking different kinds of questions while creating a felt-sense of compassion. Participants will be introduced to a variety of ways of working with people including some mindfulness and somatic awareness skills as complementary to narrative question-asking. All of these may contribute to the acknowledgement and understanding of responses to trauma. Brief and extended stories from therapy will illustrate narrative approaches. FPS Relevant Activity This training is endorsed as an FPS (Focused Psychological Strategy) Relevant Activity by the Australian Association of Social Workers. Who is this training for? Number of trainees Maximum 15 Fee Venue $440 (incl GST) Morning and afternoon refreshments included. Conference Room, Saint Catherine s House, 113 Tyler St, Tuart Hill 1

As well, Ian has studied and practiced various forms of meditation, including mindfulness approaches, for 40 years. His recently completed PhD thesis researched the similarities and differences between therapeutic mindfulness in Australia and Bhutan. Participants comments on Collaborating on Narrative Responses to Trauma Brilliant. Personally and professionally inspiring. Most helpful: The group. Ian s interviews with the group participants. The interviewer, interviewee and observer (exercises). Jane Pearson, Occupational Therapist Overall, the training was a magnificent and invaluable learning experience: personally & professionally in the context of trauma for which diverse trainings are offered these days. This training stands apart from the many, and far-exceeded any expectations I held. Most helpful: Ian s expertise and depth of knowledge & experience with material presented. The participants & their/our stories & contributions. Lanie Pianta, Social Worker/Activist 2
3 Honest and real. Most helpful: Deepening of my own connection to self through increased skill knowledge, therefore more presence with clients. Sharon Andrews, Credentialed Mental Health Nurse/Counsellor Excellent training with the facilitator showing a great depth of knowledge, enhanced with examples and ideas. Small group allowing for discussion and questions. Most helpful: Exploring how knowledge reveals itself with the use of respectful and honouring questions. Kath, Social Worker Ian is so good at taking you into the world of people, bringing to life their stories, celebrating the richness and moving into the thickness of their struggles in a way to help bring you out the other side. Feeling compassion, respect and connection with those he works with such a privilege. Thanks. Brilliant. Most helpful: The thoroughness and depth. Ian is a highly skilled and gifted teacher and practitioner. Dr Rosie McLaren, Private Practice Ian has a deeply respectful way of sharing his knowledge of narrative therapy in the context of abuse and adversity. This workshop was quite simply the most insightful and informative one I have attended on trauma and trauma informed treatment. Alex Field I felt refreshed from the start and through to the end of this training, as though I had found a way out of stuckness in conversation with young people. Clinical Psychologist Inspirational and collaborative space to develop new skills and frameworks to utilise partially or wholly. Most helpful: Ian s knowledge and presence in the field of Narrative Therapy is outstanding. Tameka Portelli, Social Worker Very important and innovative way to see things from a new perspective. Rebecca Forster, Counsellor/Case Manager Inspiring, supporting a positive and gentle approach to helping clients find a more positive sense of self and identity. Danita Walsh, Occup Therapist/Art Psychotherapist/Counsellor Helps open space to help clients move forward in more helpful, empowered ways. Most helpful: Questioning, sense of agency. Diane Ferguson, Clinical Psychologist 3
4 Very good, relaxed, interactive, respectful. Most helpful: Ian asking questions in front of us followed by us practising the same questions. Angela Goods, Senior Clinical Social Worker Most helpful: The content, the pre-reading and the exercises. Andre Georges, Social Worker Uplifting, refreshing, mindful. As always, the question-time was generative. Gerard Crouzet, Psychoanalyst A more hopeful or hope giving way of working with people who ve experienced trauma. Counsellor Good introduction to an alternative way of working with people to help them understand their responses to trauma, the effects of and ways of changing their, and our, thinking for the future. Terri Harwood, Clinical Nurse Consultation Mental Health Ian is a very inclusive trainer with a gentle and engaging manner making the training very accessible. A wonderful introduction to the use of Narrative Therapy with trauma. Janette, Social Worker I found the training informative, enjoyable and (most importantly) inspiring. Thank you for helping me to remember to bring the attention away from the problem or trauma rather than just re-telling the trauma. Enlightening. Most helpful: Practical exercises, demonstrations by facilitator. Registration Form on next page 4
