1 Lahore University of Management Sciences PSY320: Personality Theories Spring Instructor: Uzma Mazhar Office: 110-D New SS Wing Office hours: **** or by appointment Personality Theories surveys various major approaches to the study of personality development i.e.: psychodynamic, behaviorist, cognitive, humanistic, feminist & transpersonal; & the application of these theories to everyday life. Course Description: This course compares & contrasts major views of how personality theories explain: motivation, personality development, self-knowledge, unconscious processes, psychological adjustment, pathology, treatment and the relationship between the individual and society. The key theorists & concepts associated with each perspective are highlighted, along with the strengths & limitations of that approach. Core/Elective: Elective, Junior & Senior 4 Units Pre-requisites: SS 142 Human Behavior SS 245 Abnormal Psychology Goals & Objectives: Textbooks: Students should have a clear understanding of: 1. What is personality 2. How personality develops 3. How psychopathology develops 4. Can personality be changed, & if so, how 5. Does culture, environment, family affect personality This course encourages students in using themselves as the primary touchstone for each theory. Students validate their insights through case studies & by observing their own self, to draw conclusions about each theory. Textbooks & Readings list below Lectures & Tutorials: Lecture sessions are 100 minutes each. 1

6 Final Paper: Self Analysis using any 3 theories covered in the course Length: 20 pages, double spaced Due date for paper will be announced in class. Instructor Policies: This is a discussion & writing intensive class, to have a meaningful experience it is imperative that you read the assigned materials before class. During class you will be expected to discuss the theories and apply them to cases. Be punctual: Do not walk in & out of class at your whim. Turn off cell phones. Keep them in your bag, not on your desk.
