4 1:10 2:40 pm CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS Program (continued) WORKSHOP A: Outreach to Veterans and Their Caregivers: A Volunteer Hospice Initiative Leader: Jody Wolford-Tucker, PhD, Executive Director, Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, Ellsworth, ME Workshop description: Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County knows that the needs of veterans living at the end of life, their caregivers and their families are complex in physical, emotional and spiritual ways. The Veterans and Caregivers Outreach Program (VCOP) has been developed to prepare those who are caring for veterans and their families to serve them as fully and sensitively as possible. This presentation will describe the rationale behind this innovative program as well as some of the efforts developed so far to address these needs. The components of the VCOP program can be replicated in other service areas which include veterans and their families among their clientele. WORKSHOP B: Providing for the Expanding Older Veteran Population in Light of Current Fiscal Challenges Facing all of Health Care Leaders: Kurt M Johnston, PharmD, Chief of Pharmacy Services, VA Maine Health Care System, Augusta, ME; Izabela S. Lutostanska, MD, Geriatrics Department, VA Maine Health Care System, Augusta, ME Workshop description: What tools are available to extend/expand the treatment of the older veteran? Each day, more and more of the Baby Boom population moves from late middle age in to older adulthood. With that aging process demanding more medical support due to ongoing chronic and acute diseases, how can we continue to deliver affordable care? Just using dementia as an example, one study extrapolates that left unchecked, treatment for dementia patients in the U.S. will exceed 50% of our GDP by We must increase our efficiency in all areas of health care to hope to overcome the fiscal challenges certain to increase in size and number in the next decade. How can we use technology, good medicine, appropriate pharmacotherapy and other tools to gain an advantage over the huge societal burden of care for these elderly veterans? WORKSHOP C: Military 101; An Introduction to the Structure and Culture of the Military Leader: Chaplain (Colonel) Andrew L. Gibson, MDiv, Maine Army National Guard, Pittsfield, ME Workshop description: Maine has a population of 1.3 million citizens; 154,000 of these Mainers have worn the uniform of our country at some time during their lives. These current and former service members, as well as their families, have unique and special characteristics, language, attitudes, and mores, as compared with the general population. These attributes create a sub-culture within the general American culture which can affect how they approach challenges, healing, and interaction with the public and care givers. Military 101 gives an overview to this culture, its advantages in healing, and some of the barriers to healing in this population. 2:40 3:00 pm REFRESHMENT BREAK AND EXHIBIT TOURING 3:00 3:50 pm PANEL: VETERANS PERSPECTIVES ON AGING Facilitators: Jennifer J. Swazey, LCSW, Team Leader, Bangor Vet Center, Bangor, ME; Daryne M. Rockett, LCSW, CMP, Readjustment Counselor, Bangor Vet Center, Bangor, ME Panelists: To Be Announced Panel Description: Three veterans will share three different perspectives on how military service influences access and utilization of services in the community. These hometown heroes will describe their own military service and answer the question, What do you want providers in the community to keep in mind when they are offering services to veterans? 3:50-4:00 pm SUMMARY/COMPLETION OF EVALUATIONS Nancy Kelly, MSW, Field Work Coordinator, University of Maine School of Social Work, Orono, ME 4

5 4:10 5:45pm SPECIAL SCREENING OF THE WAY WE GET BY (color. 84+ min. Aron Gaudet, Made in assoc. with American Documentary/P.O.V.) Facilitated by: Charles Knowlen, MEd, Chairman, Board of Directors, Maine Troop Greeters, Bangor, ME The SXSW Special Jury Award winning "The Way We Get By" is a deeply moving film about life and how to live it. Beginning as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about troop greeters - a group of senior citizens who gather daily at a small airport to thank American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq, the film quickly turns into a moving, unsettling and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality. When its three subjects aren't at the airport, they wrestle with their own problems: failing health, depression, mounting debt. Joan, a grandmother of eight, has a deep connection to the soldiers she meets. The sanguine Jerry keeps his spirits up even as his personal problems mount. And the veteran Bill, who clearly has trouble taking care of himself, finds himself contemplating his own death. Seeking out the telling detail rather than offering sweeping generalizations, the film carefully builds stories of heartbreak and redemption, reminding us how our culture casts our elders, and too often our soldiers, aside. More important, regardless of your politics, "The Way We Get By" celebrates three unsung heroes who share their love with strangers who need and deserve it. 'The Way We Get By' is not so much a slice of life as the whole pie, the highs and lows of twilight living, all found and filmed in a terminal at an airport in Maine. What a country. Dan Zak, WASHINGTON POST I absolutely loved this film. Erik Childress, WGN RADIO Sad, funny, inspiring and joful. Craig Kennedy, LIVING IN CINEMA This one will leave you breathless.
