1 The Seventh Annual University of Maine Geriatrics Colloquium Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Older Adults Monday, May 7, :45 am 4:00 pm Point Lookout Resort and Conference Center Northport, Maine About the Seventh Annual Colloquium Complementary and alternative therapies are becoming more mainstream and commonly practiced throughout the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 36% of adults in the United States utilize some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy. Currently, adults in their 40s and 50s tend to be the largest users of CAM therapies. With this age cohort on the threshold of old age, there will likely be a dramatic increase in interest in alternative forms of intervention among older adults in the future. As the oldest state in the nation, it is imperative for Maine professionals and consumers alike to be educated regarding the many forms of alternative treatment interventions commonly practiced. This conference will bring together experts in the field of complementary and alternative medicine to examine some of the most common forms of alternative interventions utilized by older adults. It is intended for social workers, counselors, nurses, physicians, psychologists, practitioners of complementary and alternative interventions, and other providers working in the field of aging. Presenters will include experts in the field of complementary and alternative medicine, recipients of these therapies, as well as individuals addressing the ethics and policies surrounding alternative forms of treatment.

5 1:10 2:40 pm CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS WORKSHOP A: HEALING WITH MUSIC Daryne Rockett, LCSW, CMP, (Certified Music Practitioner), Clinical Social Worker, Bangor Vet Center and Hospice Volunteer, Hospice of Eastern Maine Workshop description: This workshop will explore the use of live music interventions with elders and their families in the treatment of anxiety, memory loss, chronic illness, impacted grief, and at the end of life. Attendees will gain an understanding of the role of the music practitioner in providing a healing environment for reducing stress, managing pain, and easing transition. This interactive presentation will include harp music and case studies. WORKSHOP B: EXPRESSIVE AND EXPERIENTIAL APPROACHES WITH OLDER ADULTS. HOW CAN ART AND PLANTS HELP IN HEALING? Elin MacKinnon, LCSW, Adjunct Faculty,, Clinical Social Worker, Private Practice Workshop description: The healing power of expressive and experiential approaches has been well documented. This workshop will focus on the use of two of those approaches (art and horticulture) with older adults. Research demonstrates that these activities can offer relief from physical and cognitive limitations, reduce stress, gently exercise arthritic joints, and stimulate memory. This workshop will explore a brief history of the use of art and horticulture as therapy, provide examples of how these approaches are currently used in various settings with older adults, and offer an experiential activity demonstrating two easy hand s on activities that could be adapted for use in many settings with individuals or groups. WORKSHOP C: ANIMALS AS THERAPEUTIC AGENTS Donald J. Hanson, BFRP, CDBC, CPD, Co-Owner, Green Acres Kennel Shop and Director, Behavior Counseling and Training Workshop description: Animals are often used to provide assistance and therapy to people.
