1 Saskatchewan Hospice Palliative Care Association Inc 2018 Spring E-Newsletter View this in your browser Facebook Twitter Website Conference 2018, CARING ACROSS THE SEASONS, was a big success with over 100 in attendance! The Conference was opened by Kokum Brenda Dubois representing the local First Nations of Saskatchewan. Keynote speaker Julie Keon s 2 Sessions The Seasons of Mothering my Medically Fragile Child and What I Would Tell You -The Medical Professional had a moving effect on those in attendance. Julie is the author of the Book - What I Would Tell You- One Mother s Adventure with Medical Fragility and follows her journey of mothering her medically fragile child and brings guidance in dealing with end-of-life issues for families, volunteers and healthcare professionals. She shares her wisdom and the emotional realities of living well despite her daughter s prognosis. We must parent our children through death as we did through their lives: with deep respect and love and by following our intuition always.

5 A Message from Health Canada This consultation is the first step in the development of a Framework upon which the federal Minister of Health will report by December of this year. We are interested in the views, lived-experiences and innovative ideas from a broad range of people, including health care providers, people living with lifethreatening illness, caregivers and family members, and the public at large. The online consultation is unique in that it covers off various discussion topics between now and July 13, It is designed to be a conversation among Canadians, with opportunities to post your thoughts and experiences, respond to other people's posts, share your stories and innovative ideas, and browse an extensive library of excellent resources and videos. With this amount of rich information and so many opportunities for discussion we designed the consultation to be interactive and evolving. Every few weeks, different themes will be introduced for discussion, so please register to join the conversation, and bookmark the page. We invite you to pick those topics that most appeal to you in the Key Dates section and join those conversations. We hope you will come back again and again!
6 Meet Mahmood Beheshti, MD, CCFP (PC) New SHPCA Director I was born and raised in Shiraz, Iran. I graduated medical school as a family physician with special interest and training in Palliative Care and cardiopulmonary medicine in I always thought to myself, one needs a lot of knowledge to become a physician, but a lot of heart to become a palliative care giver. I moved to Canada in 2006 to learn more and to experience new work settings. Started my career in core downtown Toronto and provided help to underserved including homeless and marginalized population. In 2013, moved to Weyburn, SK to start a new chapter in my life. In 2018, I joined the board of directors of SHPCA to pursue my dream of improving quality and availability of palliative care in Saskatchewan. UPDATE! SHPCA, the Canadian Cancer Society, Saskatchewan Division; ALS Society; Alzheimer Society; Huntington Society; Heart and Stroke Foundation; Saskatchewan Lung Association; SANCTUM; Aids South Saskatchewan and Kidney SK have formed the Compassionate Care Coalition of Saskatchewan to advocate for better and more hospice palliative care throughout the province. The coalition members are meeting monthly to keep the momentum going. Recently a meeting was held with the Ministry of Health representatives and in July coalition representatives will be meeting with Sharon Garratt, Vice
7 President and Dr. Mark Wahba, Physician Executive who are responsible for Palliative Care with the new Saskatchewan Health Care Authority. We are reaching out to become partners in Palliative Care reform in the province. Send us your Hospice and Palliative Care related article submissions or events to go in the newsletter by clicking HERE.
