1 GP Issue Update 65 vember 2014 Trust s Dementia Strategy will improve care for patients with dementia The Trust launched its three year Dementia Strategy last month. The Dementia Strategy builds on existing work carried out by the Trust to improve care and experience for people with dementia who attend or are admitted to the Trust s acute and community hospitals. Dementia is one of the biggest challenges facing the health economy today. Nearly 12,000 people are living with dementia in Staffordshire, a figure that will keep on rising due to a growing elderly population. The Trust s strategy, which has been informed by patients, carers, staff and stakeholders, responds to the needs of local people as well as the priorities set out in the National Dementia Strategy and the Prime Minister s Challenge on Dementia. The key aims of the strategy are: Deliver person centred care that supports patients with dementia and their carers Modernise our approach to improve care and outcomes Develop a skilled enhanced care team, together with a skilled effective workforce Develop partnerships to improve care and outcomes Alison Haynes, Lead Dementia Nurse, said: Over the last year we have made significant progress on improving dementia care in our hospitals. The Dementia Strategy builds on this work and embraces new ways of working so that we can achieve our goal to become a dementia friendly hospital. We have recently created ten full time posts to work exclusively with our dementia patients to provide enhanced care and, as part of the strategy, we will train all our staff on dementia awareness. This year the Trust successfully met the challenge set by Prime Minister David Cameron to have a Dementia Champion on every adult NHS ward. So far, 66 staff members have volunteered from a range of departments not just nursing to be specially trained as dementia champions and more are keen to join the programme. Rachel Edge, a senior staff nurse at the Trust, said: I volunteered to become a dementia champion because I am passionate about improving the care of patients with dementia. we need to ensure the strategy is implemented and embedded in our work across all sites.
