Patients experience a very good response to Levodopa during early stages of the disease. As the disease progresses, however, the effect of Levodopa starts to wear off. As such it becomes ever more challenging to achieve a satisfying treatment that successfully counteracts the symptoms of advanced PD while at the same time minimizing side effects. Together with international experts, we will approach current concepts and strategies in advanced Parkinson s disease, based on the dopaminergic pathway. The lectures course will provide the theoretical education and practical experience in the management of pump-based treatments for advanced Parkinson s disease. The symposium Therapeutic Strategies in Advanced Parkinson s Disease, Vienna, Austria, has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME ) with 5 European CME credits (ECMEC s). Prof. Jean-Christophe Corvol, MD, PhD Department of Neurology Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière, Paris, France Jean-Christophe Corvol, MD, PhD is Professor of Neurology at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, head of the Clinical Research Center for Neurosciences at the Brain and Spinal cord Institute (ICM), co-chair of the French clinical research network for Parkinson s disease and movement disorders (NS-Park), and researcher in the team of neurogenetics at the ICM (head Pr A. Brice). Jean-Christophe Corvol has a training in both Neurology and Pharmacology (MD in 2003), has done a PhD (2005) in experimental neurosciences on dopaminergic signalling in the laboratory of JA Girault (Institut du fer à moulin, Paris) and a post-doc at UCSF in the neurogenetic laboratory of J. Oksenberg (San Francisco, USA). His field of interest is genetic modifiers and pharmacogenetics in Parkinson s disease. The approach is transversal, combining experiments in experimental models, candidate genetic association studies in well-phenotyped cohorts, imaging-genetic studies, and genome wide association studies. Jean-Christophe Corvol has published 136 original articles in peer review journals (H index=39). He is member of the Expert Committee for Neuroscience at INSERM, the French societies for Neurology, Pharmacology and Neurosciences, member of the International Movement Disorder Society (treasurer (elected) of the European section). Dr. Tove Henriksen, MD Department of Neurology and Parkinson Clinic University Hospital of Bispebjerg, Copenhagen, Denmark Tove Henriksen, MD is Senior consultant at the Department of Neurology and Head of Parkinson Clinic at University Hospital of Bispebjerg, Copenhagen. She holds her MD from University of Copenhagen She is specialized in Neurology since 1998 and for years head of department with device aided treatment of Parkinson s disease with extensive experience in the field of i.e. LCIG, SCAI and DBS. Dr. Tove Henriksen is cochair in the Scandinavian Movement Disorder Society and committee member of the European Section of MDS. In addition she is member of various societies like Danish Medical Society, the Danish Neurological Society or the Movement Disorder Society. The emphasis of Dr. Tove Henriksen s publications have been on Parkinson s disease and the treatment of advanced disease in particular and she published more than 20 articles in peer review journals as well as several posters in addition. She has been chairing a number of courses in Parkinson s disease nationally and internationally and has given a large number of lectures at international MDS meetings and congresses. Prof. Fabrizio Stocchi, MD, PhD Department of Neurology Clinical Trial Centre IRCCS San Raffaele Pisana, Rome, Italy Fabrizio Stocchi, MD PhD is Professor of Neurology, Consultant in Neurology and Director of the Parkinson s disease and Movement disorders research centre and director of the drug development research centre at the University and Institute for Research and Medical Care IRCCS San Raffaele Rome. He is also Scientific advisor of the Institute for Parkinson s Disease Research in Vicenza. Professor Stocchi was awarded his MD from the University of L Aquila and his PhD from the University of Catania. Professor Stocchi s research activities have centred on neuropharmacology in the field of movement disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Professor Stocchi pioneered (along with Dr. Obeso and Tom Chase) in the 80 s the concept of continuous dopaminergic stimulation for Parkinson s disease and started the subcutaneous and intraintestinal infusion of dopaminergic drugs. He has published many books and papers on the genetics, clinical diagnosis, characterisation and treatment of Parkinson s disease, as well as in preclinical research into the disease. He is an active member of 11 societies, including the Movement Disorders Society, the WFN society where is member of the extrapiramidal committee, the European Clinical Neuropharmacology Society and the European Federation Neurological Society. Prof. Eduardo Tolosa, MD, PhD Department of Neurology and of the Parkinson Disease Research IDIBAPS University of Barcelona, Spain Prof. Eduardo Tolosa, MD, PhD is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Parkinson s disease Research IDIBAPS at University of Barcelona. He earned his MD degree from the University of Barcelona, Spain, and obtained his neurological training at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. He was visiting scientist at Brookhaven National Hospital, where he worked with George Cotzias during 1974 and 1975, and, subsequently, he joined the faculty of the Department of Neurology at the University of Minnesota. He was later appointed chief of neurology at the University Hospital in Barcelona in Prof. Tolosa was certified as a neurologist by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry in 1976 and became a fellow in He is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association and the Royal College of Physicians, and a founding member of the Movement Disorder Society (MDS). He has been president of the MDS and president of the European Neurological Society. Prof. Tolosa is an honorary member of several neurological societies, including the British Neurological Association and the French Neurological Society. Prof. Tolosa s research interests have centered on movement disorders and particularly in issues related to experimental therapeutics, etiology and pathophysiology of various parkinsonisms. Dieter Volc, MD Head of Neurology Department & Movement Disorders Center Confraternitaet - Privatklinik, Vienna, Austria Dieter Volc, MD has been involved in various clinical trials and programs in neurogeriatrics, especially with Parkinson s and Alzheimer s disease since In 1990 he became a coworker of Univ. Prof. Dr. Walther Birkmayer, the first user of L-DOPA therapy for Parkinson s disease Dr. Volc founded PROSENEX AmbulatoriumbetriebsgesmbH, a private outpatient facility for neurogeriatric disorders and in 1995 became head of the Neurology Department & Movement Disorders Center at Confraternitaet- Privatklinik Josefstadt. Dr. Volc was responsible for 35 clinical trials in neurological disorders since 1984 as PI, deputy PI or co-investigator, of which 17 studies were focused on Parkinson s disease. Six studies were phase I trials first-in-man/first-of-its-kind. His interest is in all stages of Parkinson s disease with a strong adherence to invasive therapies in advanced stages. He has a strong connection with the patients organizations in both Parkinson s disease and restless legs/willis-ekbom-disease groups where Dr. Volc served as a medical advisor and member of the board.
