I want to thank families, friends, and residents who attended our wonderful Family Fun Fest on September 8 th. It was a great event with beautiful weather, impeccable food, lively music, and a fiercely competitive BINGO game. It was wonderful to meet all of the members of our Epiphany community and to have all of us come together to enjoy each other s company in the beautiful Minnesota weather. Additionally, I would like to thank the Epiphany staff members that put many long hours into planning and running the Fun Fest. If you enjoyed the fest, please be sure to thank the staff members for making it possible. In addition to our wonderful events and activities here at Epiphany, we are also working to update the building so it can continue to be a great place to live for all of you. Some of you may have noticed the new chairs, lighting, and smooth ceiling in the chapel as well as the repairs made to the floors and updated flooring installed in the elevator lobby. We are planning to continue updating the floors in various common spaces as well as the furniture. Our goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing environment that is both comfortable and functional for our residents and guests. Epiphany is also working to update our website. By the end of 2018 Epiphany Senior Housing will have a new and improved website that will provide information to families and future tenants to learn more about our community and the services we provide. The team here at Epiphany is constantly working to improve quality, efficiency, and your way of life. We are excited for the upgrades and hope you all are too. We hope to see you around this month! Olivia

3 Nancy Churchill, RN Home Care Compliance Manager Nursing News How many times do you hear someone say they had a rough night s sleep? It is common to experience changes in our sleeping patterns such as becoming sleepy earlier, waking earlier, or sleeping less deeply as we age. Poor sleep can lead to increased risk of depression, difficulty with memory, daytime sleepiness, increased risk of nighttime falls, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and weight gain. Most adults require 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep each night, but the best indicator on how much sleep is needed is how you feel in the morning. Waking up feeling tired is a good indication that you are not getting the sleep you need. There are many ways to prepare for a good night s sleep; here are just a few ideas: Follow a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and getting up at the same time each day. Keep electronics out of the bedroom. By not watching TV or using electronic devices, your brain will associate the bedroom with sleep. Light from electronic devices may make it difficult to fall asleep. Keep your clocks out of view as the light can disrupt your sleep and watching the minutes tick while trying to fall asleep can keep you awake. Plan your naps. Napping too late in the day may disrupt your nighttime sleep. Keep your naps short; even a 5 minutes nap can make you more alert. Most people benefit from limiting naps to minutes. Feeling groggy and unable to concentrate after a longer nap is not uncommon. Nap in a comfortable area preferably with limited light and noise. Develop a bedtime routine. Take time to relax before bedtime, read a book or listen to soothing music. Use low lighting in the evenings to help prepare you for bed and help you relax. Keep your bedroom comfortable by keeping it quiet, dark, and cool. As we age, we may become more sensitive to noise, light, and heat which can result in a poor night s sleep. Be sure your bed feels comfortable to you. Keep active by getting regular exercise, enjoy the sunshine, and participate in social activities. Bright sunlight helps regulate your sleep-wake cycles. Keep shades open during the day and try placing a chair near the window. Watch what you eat and drink. Avoid eating large meals close to bedtime and stay away from caffeine late in the day. Refrain from alcohol as even small amounts make it harder to stay asleep. Satisfy your hunger prior to bed by having a light snack. Cut down on sugary foods, and limit what you drink within ninety minutes before bed to decrease how often you wake up to use the bathroom at night. Minimize Stress and anxiety. Keep a journal to record worries before you go to bed, or keep a to-do list and check off completed tasks so you don t have to worry about them while trying to sleep. Wishing you a Happy Fall and a Good Nights Sleep! Volume 12 Issue 3 page 3
