COLLECTION AND DESTRUCTION: Stericycle is the Service Provider contracted to coordinate collection, transportation and final disposal through incineration of products in Alberta (SENA). ACCEPTED All prescription medications Over-the-counter drugs Natural health products Inhalers NOT ACCEPTED Pharmacy stock & compounding waste Commercial or institutional waste Sharps, needles, syringes, or lancets Cosmetic products Medication samples Keep liquids and creams in original container. 4 FUNDED BY INDUSTRY STEWARDS HPSA 2017 Board of Directors This report is submitted on behalf of the 159 producers of medications that are members of the HPSA. The HPSA was established in 1999 as a federal not-for-profit corporation with an all industry board consisting of producers of prescription drugs, consumer health products and medical devices (sharps). The HPSA is the producer responsibility organization (PRO) that administers regulated extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs in Canada. HPSA has leveraged its experience as a national PRO to bring promotion and education, material collection, end of life material management and regulatory knowledge to the MMRP. HPSA member producers have been engaged, active and supportive and retail pharmacies have also supported these programs by acting as voluntary collection sites. HPSA s mandate is to perform, on behalf of each steward, certain duties required under the Waste Reduction and Prevention Act and subsequent Household Hazardous Material and Prescribed Material Stewardship Regulations HHMR (Man Reg. 16/2010) through our stewardship program plan filed with the Manitoba Sustainable Development, Manitoba Conservation. A volunteer board governs the Health Products Stewardship Association and is comprised of directors representing the following industries in Canada. Prescription drugs Over-the-counter medications Natural health products Sharps devices Earl Black Chair Dominique Ferland Vice Chair Stephen Macdonald Director Colleen McElwain Director Anuj Pasrija Director Brad Wright Director The industry stewards are responsible for 100% of the costs of the Manitoba Medications Return Program (MMRP). HPSA is accountable to its members for the collection and responsible disposal of unused or expired medications returned from the public through our network of registered pharmacies. 2

5 TAKE-IT BACK! The MMRP is a free service offered to the public through community pharmacies. Community pharmacies are easily accessible as they generally have extended hours, and pharmacists are the most accessible health care workers for questions and concerns about medications and their safety. The MMRP focuses on the collection and proper disposal of unused or expired medications from the residential sector. Members of the public are to return unused or expired medications to the pharmacy for proper disposal. The 60L pail identified with a Medications Return Program logo is provided to the participating location. A list of products that are and are not accepted are also listed on the container. 6 Program Performance Performance Measure: Results Quantity Collected MMRP collected 16,809 kg of medication during 2017.Table 1 provides distribution by districts. Number of Collection Points Pharmacy Participation Promotion At the end of 2017, there were 346 collection sites representing 87.5% of all licensed pharmacies. See the full list in Appendix 1 Pharmacists are MMRP s primary contact with the consumer. We published and make available information to educate both the pharmacists and the public on the MRP. These are: Website: Pharmacy newsletters Promo order sheet New pails with MMRP logo and accepted/not accepted decal Rack cards on program Participation in the MARRC 2017 Ambassador Tour including direct promotion and education to the public in over 70 events (Appendix 2) with logo decals on both MARRC Summer Tour vans and HPSA roll-up banner Print advertising in newspapers and magazines including Senior Scope and the Winnipeg Free Press. RCBC Toll-Free and Recyclopedia - recycling hotline service and the new on-line app version for the recycling information including medications Canstar Prime Times Feature reaching total circulation 202,300 targeting the 55+ demographic. Partnered with Drugs Free Kids on a national campaign aiming to keep abusable medication away from teens. Dispute Resolution No disputes were filed in

7 2017 Highlights 2017 marks another successful partnership with the Manitoba Association for Resource Recovery Corp. (MAR- RC). MMRP promotional and educational material was distributed through their summer provincial tour with Logo Decals on both MARRC Summer tour vans and HPSA Roll up banner. The annual Summer Ambassador Program began for the year in May 2017 and marked the largest tour to date. The ambassadors participated in over 70 events across the province distributing and educating the public on proper medication disposal and safety. Our organizations came together in 2015 with the goal of increasing overall recycling awareness and collection rates of all recyclables during the summer months. In 2017, HPSA has completed the development and marketing of a free phone app to quickly pinpoint drop-off locations and recycling options specific to their communities, Canada Recyclepedia. The application uses a smart phone s GPS system to provide users with a list and corresponding map of 10 closest drop off options for a variety of recyclable materials, including Medications. Canada Recyclepedia is a national version of the provincial BC Recyclepedia App launch early This mobile app is available for download at android and apple stores. HPSA and Drug Free Kids sponsored n a national campaign to help keep our kids safe. The campaign creative focused on encouraging parental action and return all leftovers to their local pharmacy. The campaign transforms a very simple message into a powerful one of the things we hand down to our children, lets make sure our prescription drugs aren t one of them. 5
