1 State of the County Health Report The 2017 State of the County Health (SOTCH) Report is a review of health indicators pertaining to residents of and counties. The purpose of this report is to track priority issues identified in the 2016 Community Health Assessment (CHA), highlight new initiatives and emerging issues as well as to inform the community and stakeholders about the health status of residents. The rate of pregnant women who smoke is 9.8% for County which is equal to the North Carolina rate. The rate of pregnant women who smoke is 14.0% for County compared to the state rate of 9.8%. According to the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for Eastern North Carolina, which includes and counties, respondents reported 70.9% have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 25.0, meaning that they are overweight or obese. 19.4% of those surveyed are current smokers. Adults aged reported smoking while the majority of younger adults aged reported using E-Cigarettes. Reports indicate 83.7% of the population is covered by health insurance, while 16.3% still remain uninsured. The leading causes of death for and counties have remained consistent for each county since the selection of the priorities. 4 Highlights 2016 Priorities and Implementation Strategies Prenatal Care and Education Cancer Chronic Prenatal Care and Education Reducing infant mortality through prenatal care and education. Tobacco Free Living Enhancing tobacco education and smoke-free environments. Monthly car seat checks offered through Safe Kids of County. Information provided to 350 Middle School students during Career Day. and Health Departments as well as /Perquimans Smart Start are permanent checking stations. Education provided to 50 participants of Rachel s House in County on healthy eating in pregnancy, growth and development, and tobacco cessation. County Health Department and / Perquimans Smart Start hosted a Birth and Beginning Years (B.A.B.Y.) class with six graduates. Classes included: Triple P Positive Parenting tips Boys and Girls Club of Edenton- sponsored a cigarette butts clean-up day at Waterfront Park. 300 attendees at the tobacco education lunch and learn hosted by John A. Holmes High School. Walk Your Butts Off program for students and staff at Colerain and Windsor Elementary Schools in County. Information provided to 400 Middle School students during Career Day. Tobacco education provided to 12 students at C&N Learning Center, County. Breastfeeding success Preparing for labor Graduates received a car seat installed by a CPS certified technician. Tobacco education provided to 2nd graders at White Oak Elementary during their Cubbies Water Buddies program. Quitline NC Provides free cessation services to North Carolina residents 83 Registered Quitline participants in County and 28 participants in County during Quitline information shared with fifty participants at New Year, New You Health Fair. 5 Highlights Cancer Increase awareness and prevention Brian Center in County distributed breast health information to all employees during breast health month. Pink Power Program Breast health information shared along with tobacco free and exercise information 200 participants with Vidant and 200 participants with Vidant Chronic Prevention through healthy lifestyle education and active living Heart Health event in County with 200 people in attendance. Back to School Bash for Edenton - Schools. Provided education about healthy living, exercise, and tobacco free living to 400 participants. Active Routes To School Encouraging physical activity within our schools for pedestrian and bike safety County Shared healthy lifestyle education at the Middle School Health Fair. Community Walk/Health Fair for Mother s Against Violence with 100 participants. In August, participated in County Health Fair to share information about bicycle/pedestrian safety, and the importance of physical activity with 400 participants. Provided Know It, Control It Program for 17 participants at the County Senior Center. County Elementary Health and PE teachers attended a Let s Go NC Train the Trainer session. The teachers were trained on the bicycle and pedestrian portions of the curriculum. In October, West Elementary participated in Walk to School Day with 150 participants. Diabetes Prevention Program Recruited at health fairs, including High School. 50 participants filled out a CDC Risk Assessment County Taught a bicycle safety lesson using the Let's Go NC Curriculum to 4th and 5th graders at the Boys and Girls Club of Edenton. Faithful Families program presented at Providence Baptist Church in County with 15 participants. Bicycle Skills Course over 40 youth were taught fundamental safety skills, learned how to properly fit a helmet, and were able to ride through the course to practice what they learned. Educational materials and a small incentive were awarded to participants after completing the course. 5

6 Highlights Fruit and Veggie Prescription Program $10 vouchers given to community members to encourage farmers market participation Get Fit! Free fitness classes offered to increase access to physical activity Medical Community disseminated 50 vouch- County ers in County and 50 vouchers in County. Fall Into Fitness was a monthlong program consisting of lunch and learns, a Zumba class and a line dancing class. 49 participants completed the program. Eat Smart Move More Holiday Challenge participants received Worksite Wellness Providing employees access to wellness activities weekly incentives, recipes, and nutrition education. The Obesity, Diabetes, Heart and Stroke Prevention Program (ODHDSP) worked with County Schools to support physical activity resources and create an employee wellness center/gym onsite at the Central Office. Funding from ODHDSP provided 4 bicycles, 4 helmets, 2 magnetic resistance trainers, 2 front wheel blocks to be used with trainers, 4 bike locks, 5 yoga mats, 6 jump ropes, 1 scale, 6 resistance bands, 6 (5- lb.) dumbbells, 6 (2-lb.) dumbbells, and 4 digital pedal exercisers. County Schools also received resources through ODHDSP to set up a self monitoring blood pressure station for employee use and education. County 110 registered participants 61 fitness classes offered in 2017 including Zumba, Line Dancing, Yoga, Strength Training, Kick boxing, Open Gym, Boot Camp, and a Walking Club 5 Nutrition/Cooking Classes offered Health screenings including: weight checks, BMI/body fat analysis, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol screenings. 6
