4 Background of Liver Diseases in Taiwan The most serious Local Disease in Taiwan HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma) is the No. 1 cause of death in male cancer patients the No. 2 cause of death in female cancer patients The major causes of chronic liver disease & HCC: Hepatitis B (prevalence rate: 15% ~ 20%; 2.5 million people) Hepatitis C (prevalence rate: 2% ~ 5%; 400 thousand people)
