Newsletter I remember in the April newsletter I spoke to how late Spring had arrived. This month I seem to see Spring Fever as it has spread all over. It is, as if all of sudden Spring is contagious among the students and staff. Everyone is getting out, and so many activities and various events happened during the month of May. Amazing! Awesome! Astonishing! Here are six highlights in this newsletter: Middle School Math Competition in Rochester, New York which was a great opportunity and experience for Middle School students to meet others from deaf schools; in collaboration with Lexington Hearing & Speech Services, students celebrated and supported The Better Speech & Hearing Month event; Jr/Sr Prom Night was very entertaining and unforgettable for those attendees; two Spring sports activities, Co-ed Softball games and Boys & Girls Track and Field; and last, but not at least, one of the most important L e x i n g t o n S t r o n g! activities for staff - Teachers Appreciation Day. All staff are, always APPRECIATED for what they do and have done for Lex students. Scroll down and enjoy reading! I am looking forward to June s newsletter where we will be focusing on Students Success. Best, Donald A. Galloway Superintendent/CEO
The Lexington team on stage at the awards ceremony. On April 10-12, 2015, four eighth grade Middle School Lexington students participated for the first time in the Rochester Institute of Technology s eighth annual Math Competition, at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, N.Y. Lexington was represented by Ahsanur Rashid (team captain), Mauricio Franco, Swapnil Patel, and Eli Solomon. Students from 25 different schools for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing throughout the United States participated in the competition. The competition is designed to promote math as fun and engaging and features three rounds that test speed, accuracy, teamwork and additional math skills. The competition consisted of a Team Problem Solving Challenge, a Sprint Round and a Target Round. The "Team Problem Solving Challenge," was first. Teammates worked together to solve 10 problems and generate one set of answers. This was followed by the "Sprint Round" and "Target Rounds" which were both individual competitions. As a fun fast paced activity students from different schools were mixed and grouped for the Amazing Math Race, a room-to-room math puzzle race. Afterwards, all teams came together in the auditorium where the top four scoring teams and top ten scoring individuals were announced. Students were able to see finalists compete for the championship. Ahsanur's, "Amazing Math Race, team won the math puzzle race. Indiana and Texas Schools for the Deaf took the top 2 Team awards and top 2 individual awards. The Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf, from Canada and The Learning Center for the Deaf, from Massachusetts won "Spirit Awards." Lexington finished 13 th out of 22 teams. As individuals, they finished in the middle third of 99 students participating. Ready to enter the SDC building for the team competition. Overall, the students enjoyed their experience. They were excited to be part of the competition. They enjoyed the atmosphere and the opportunity to interact with other deaf students. Students had the most fun participating in the math puzzle race. Coaches Joe Longo Astrid Zea Participants Ahsanur Rashid (team captain) Mauricio Franco Swapnil Patel Eli Solomon Sunday morning, leaving for the Rochester, NTID Math Competition.
Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM) was founded in 1927, by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The aim of Better Speech and Hearing Month, which occurs every May, is to raise awareness about hearing and speech problems, encouraging people to analyze their own hearing and speech, and to take action if they think there might be a problem. Treatment can then be given to improve the quality of life in people with communication problems. At Lexington School for the Deaf, both the Speech/Language Department and the Lexington Strong Committee have collaborated in order to empower and encourage students to become aware of different modalities they can use (e.g. both oral language and sign language) in order to lead communicative exchanges and interactions with others. A bulletin board was established and created using student interest and responses (Please see attached). The bulletin board was entitled, Students communicate their love of learning at Lexington School for the Deaf by An emphasis has also been placed on better hearing aid hygiene. The Lexington Strong Committee, the Speech/Language Department and the Hearing and Speech Center have collaborated by creating and providing handouts and training for both teachers and parents so students can be empowered to learn how to better use and care for their assistive devices. In addition, videos were provided to teaching staff and parents of Lexington students maintaining and caring for their hearing aids and assistive technology so students can access the newly learned information when needed.
PROM NIGHT 2015
Head Coach- Spencer Stelmach Assistant Coach- Ricardo Caceres Record Metro league 9-2 Deaf Tournament in Pennsylvania 3-1 We won the championship, and finished first place in the Metro league. Jia Chang led the team with 41 RBIs, a.720 batting average, and 4 HRs and he won the Triple Crown. Tanvir's defense was gold glove caliber and saved us lots of runs. Eli and Dilshane were both rookies but their hitting and defense were well above their age. Heidy improving at first base as much as she did was main reason for us winning the championship. Metro Championship game Lexington 14 Winston Prep 5
Head Coach- Frank Wells This year we had three athletes in our Track and Field. In spite of great effort put forward by the boys competing in in three major tournaments (PSAA, ESDAA, and Metro League) this year we came home empty handed. We performed well for a small team. Thank you Jean-Carlos Diaz, Fernando Cardona, Mohammed Hogue, & Jamar Hughes (Manager) for making this season happen as you all did you best and put all your effort to improve your personal best every time you competed! Congratulations to you all!
Lexington Girls Track and Field Head Coach- Tami Silverstein The Girls Varsity track and Field team did very well this year considering we only had 3 girls on the team. ESDAA TOURNAMENT- 6 TH PLACE METRO LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP- 2 ND PLACE Johanna Vargas placed 3 rd in 200 Meter Dash. All of the girls improved throughout the season and achieved their personal best in their particular events. With only three girls on the team they were able to stay motivated and finished the season strong. I am very proud of them.
Thank you for including me in your thought for teacher Appreciation Day. I even got cake hand delivered outside at dismissal. How nice. Thank you again. May was Staff Appreciation Day. Our lovely parents and children decorated certificates for the staff at Lexington, and we displayed them in the lobby during the Staff Appreciation Day, along with serving cake and distributing lovely gifts everyone received. We also put in everyone s mailboxes certificates. These are some of the teachers and staffs reactions. Thank you for both the cake and the gift. Just wanted to say thank you all so very much for the wonderful gift and the appreciation certificates. I definitely felt appreciated, loved the idea. Thanks again to all staff, students and parents who made it all possible. Middle School Teacher Wanted to thank you and L.A.A, HS student Council, and Middle School S.G for the USB drive. Definitely can use this! Appreciate the gesture! Thank You All So Much!!
