3 1.0 Role Summary This post will be for a period of 6 months; this is a full time post although applications from part time candidates will be considered. This post has been created to meet the rapidly increasing demand for clinical services in Allergy. 2.0 Main Duties and Responsibilities Clinical allergy services currently provided by the Allergy & Clinical Immunology department are based at the Royal Preston Hospital. The successful applicant will be based at the Royal Preston Hospital, but under exceptional circumstances, may be expected to undertake sessions at Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital. The population of the area served by the Trust is approximately 1.6 million. Clinical responsibilities The locum consultant will be expected to help in the Department s effort towards gaining accreditation for the allergy service. Referrals will be from both primary and secondary care and will be conducted by regular outpatient clinics and by hospital, telephone and written consultations. It is anticipated that the appointee will undertake an average of 4 general allergy clinics, 1 immunotherapy clinics and 1 challenge clinic per week. The consultant will also be expected to work with clinical and laboratory colleagues to maintain and develop the service, so that a high-quality, cost-effective service is provided. Management and Administration The post holder will be asked to undertake appropriate administrative responsibilities within the department and Trusts as agreed with the Specialty Lead and Clinical Director of Pathology / Allergy & Clinical Immunology. The post holder will be expected to cover other consultant staff when on annual and study leave Training The post holder will be expected to participate in the training of junior medical staff and will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate educational activities. Research and Development The post holder will be expected to participate in research and development and assist in the supervision of projects undertaken by junior medical staff.

4 Supporting Professional Activities The post holder will be expected to participate in audit and continuing professional development (CPD) and to maintain an adequate CPD portfolio. The consultant will be expected to meet the annual/cycle requirements of the Royal College of Physicians CPD scheme. Reasonable support, both in time and funding, will be available to support this activity. The consultant will also be expected to participate in the Trust's appraisal scheme for medical staff. This is conducted within directorates and follows national guidelines. The appointee will be provided with appropriate office accommodation; desktop computer, linked to the laboratory network; and internet and have full-time secretarial support. Good library facilities are available at the Postgraduate Medical Centre. 3.0 The Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Clinical allergy services are provided by the Department of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, which is part of the Diagnostics Directorate. In addition to clinical allergy services, the department also provides a primary immunodeficiency service. Allergy services The department provides a Tier 3 allergy Regional Services to the Lancashire and South Cumbria zone of the North West Region. A comprehensive service in allergy for adults is provided. Most patients are seen as out-patients or day cases. Approximately 1,200 new and 1,500 follow up allergy patients are seen per annum. We provide a service for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of allergic disorders, including: Hay fever Perennial rhinitis; allergic or non-allergic Urticaria and angioedema Anaphylaxis Food allergy (all types including peanut and nut allergy) Drug allergy, including allergy to antibiotics, NSAIDs and local anaesthetics and suspected anaphylaxis during anaesthesia Bee and wasp venom allergy Latex allergy Mastocytosis Skin tests and specific IgE tests are performed. There is a dedicated immunotherapy clinic, and subcutaneous treatment is available for a range of allergens including insect venoms and aeroallergens. There are also dedicated food challenge and drug testing/challenge clinics. There is a nurse led Omalizumab injection clinic. Research The department actively promotes research

5 Audit The department has a regular programme of clinical audit and participates in multidisciplinary and multi-professional clinical audit. It is a member of the North West Allergy and Clinical Immunology Network. Teaching The appointee will be expected to teach junior medical staff Key Working Relationships Paediatrics, Respiratory Medicine, ENT, Dermatology 4.0 Job Plan/On Call Requirements This post is 10 PA s as set out in the Job plan below (subject to discussion). All consultants are expected to work productively for 42 weeks a year and will be required to undertake annual appraisal, revalidation and job planning within their allocated contractual SPA time (1.5 SPA per week). Any SPA activity over 1.5 will be in line with the trust SPA tariff and will be reviewed as part of the annual job planning process. Programmed Activities This post comprises of the following PA s: 8.5 Direct Clinical Care: 5 PA out-patient clinics (general allergy (4 PA), immunotherapy 1 PA) 1 PA Challenge clinic OR Complex allergy patients (total of 2-3 patients) 1 PA Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting 1.5 PA administrative/clinical liaison 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities 1.5 PA teaching, research, audit, CPD The out-patient clinics and challenge clinic will be fixed PAs; the remainder of the PAs will be worked flexibly to respond to clinical need and service development. Once every month, on the second Wednesday of the month, routine clinics are cancelled and a general challenge clinic is run, in which everyone in the Department is involved. The final job plan will be agreed with the successful applicant and specialty lead. The timetable below is a guide which may be subject to change:

6 AM PM Monday OP Teaching,Research Tuesday OP OP Wednesday Low risk drug testing/challenge clinic Thursday OP MDT Admin/clinical liaison Friday Immunotherapy Admin/clinical liaison AND Audit / CPD On-Call There is no on-call commitment. 5.0 Person Specification Locum Consultant in Allergy REQUIREMENTS ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE Qualifications Full GMC registration MRCP OR evidence of equivalent training and experience Completed the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB)- approved Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) curriculum in Allergy or demonstrate evidence of equivalence in knowledge, training and experience of Allergy and the care of patients with allergic disorders. Clinical Experience Clinical experience in all aspects of allergy, including general allergy, immunotherapy, food allergy, drug allergy and testing Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in allergy. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients Postgraduate thesis For those on Specialist Register, evidence of satisfactory completion of CPD in allergy since registration Management and Administrative Experience Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the allergy department. Ability to organise and manage the allergy service e.g. outpatient priorities / day case lists Ability to manage and lead the clinical team Experience of audit management Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets Experience of business case preparation and establishing new clinical services
