2 New Pupils in the school We welcome the pupils who enrolled in August. Lisa-Marie O Keeffe (Senior Infants), Sean Murphy (Senior infants), Shane Baguio (First class), Joseph Murphy, Vanessa Holweg and Caroline Kowalcze (Second Class), Faye Curley and Jack Crowley (Third Class), Luke Wongrinyong, Kathlyn Mangan and Brenna Collier (Fourth class) and Chloe Corcoran (Fifth class). Staff Changes We are very sorry to have lost Ms. Úna Maher from the staff. Ms. Maher has taken up a position in St. Mary s School in Dungarvan. We wish her the best of luck. We would like to extend a very warm welcome to Ms. Ciara Hennessy and Mr. Kevin Moran who have joined the staff this year. They are both graduates of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. Retirement of School Manager Sr. Aileen Fenton announced her retirement from our school s Board of Management during the summer. She has been our manager since amalgamation. Sr. Aileen has worked tirelessly in the pursuit of new buildings and resources for our school. We are very grateful for all her help and support over recent years. We wish her good health and happiness in her retirement. We welcome Mrs. Anne Fitzgerald, (Deputy Principal of Blackwater Community School) who is to succeed Sr. Aileen as Chairperson of our Board of Management. We look forward to working with her. School Building Project The Department of Education and Science has announced that our building project can proceed to tender. This is a very significant development in this current economic climate. We are hopeful that building will commence in this current school year. Sincere thanks to our Board of Management for all their endeavours with regard to this application. Out Going Parents Council We have been very fortunate to have such a talented, resourceful and committed group of parents willing to serve on our Parents Council Committee. The effort and success of this group has been phenomenal. The nine interactive whiteboards and associated hardware were funded by this group of parents. No request from the staff was ever denied. Sincere thanks for all your hard work. The election of a new Parents Council is in progress. Bunscoil Bhothar na Naomh, Lios Mor, Co. Phort Lairge. 3 Fire safety Week The local fire officers are very generous with their time as they paid a visit to the school during National Fire Safety Week. Due to the inclement weather, the fire officers had to come into each classroom. They brought in specialised equipment to show the children. With the aid of photographs and anecdotes, they were able to explain very clearly the dangers of fire. The amount of knowledge retained by the children from previous visits was remarkable. Goal Jersey Day Thanks to all the parents/guardians who helped to support Goal Jersey Day. Once again, it was a great success. A total of was collected in our school. Christmas Shoebox Reminder We are supporting the appeal to send Christmas gifts through the Operation Christmas Child Charity. Mrs. Margaret McCormack of Fermoy recently visited the school to tell of her experiences of delivering boxes to deprived children. The children have taken leaflets home to explain the packing of a shoebox gift. Further details are available on The boxes will be collected from the school during the week 2 nd to 6 th November. 4 After returning from our summer holidays we knew we had a Western football title to retain. We trained intensely in the field in the morning and picked teams for a league to play against each other at lunchtime. Our first practice match was against Ardfinnan. We sailed through that match beating them well. It boosted our confidence for the championship. Our first championship match was against Cappoquin. We beat them after a very close game. Our second match was against Ballymac. They came out with all guns blazing in the second half. After an intense forty minutes we over came them by two points. In the Western final we met Dungarvan and with some fine scores from our forwards and great defending from our backs we were victorious. The final score was 3-5 to 1-3. The team was Jack Crowley, Damien Prendergast, Michael Ryan, Ian Fives, Jack Roche, Steven Mangan, Fionn Daly, Eoghan Murray (Capt) Anthony McGlone, Sam Ryan, Aaron Whelan, Finbar Reaney, Daniel O Keeffe, Jack Prendergast, Shay Platt (subs)jake Murphy, Conor Bennett, Evan Roche, Mark Roche, Jeff Howard, Patrick Foley, Shane Coughlan and Brian Meagher. We couldn t have done it with out our mangers Mr. Prendergast and Mr. Smith. By Eoghan Murray and Aaron Whelan Girls football Back to school and back to the field! This year we felt with an extra effort we could re capture the Western Football title. We trained hard down the field each day gaining match experience from our own school league. The team started the year well, winning their first challenge match against Middleton. Then it was down to the serious competition Championship. Our first match was against near neighbours Cappoquin. Unfortunately after a closely contested game we lost by two points. Next up was a home game against Ballymac. Our performance was much improved from the previous game and the win put us through to the Western semi final against Scoil Garbháin. Sadly we lost against Scoil Garbháin and bowed out of the championship for the year. A special thanks to the parents who drove us and supported us in our games and to Martina Landers for her coaching advice and time. The team was: Margaret Tobin, Lydia O Brien, Sarah Landers, Eimear Mountayne, Sharon Williams (c), Karen Kelleher, Grace Johnson, Aisling Prendergast, Aisling Meagher, Alice Russell, Ruth Farrow, Emma Power, Emily Prendergast, Sarah Nugent-Shanahan, Emily Geoghegan, Saoirse O Gorman, Ellen Mc Closkey, Kirsty Feeney, Tara Day, Kate Houlihan and Jane Barry.
